Game of the Week Winner

Reactor 09, my 2nd AGS effort and strangest game yet, is out.

What's going on in this game?

Escaping from a prison is never easy. But doing it with a correctional officer's consent is even harder. Officer Matthew Holmstett is a walking, talking regulation book and has his own set of ideals. Getting him to do what you want won't be an easy task. Don't overdo it, or you may find yourself handcuffed to a radiator very fast. Nobody trusts someone convicted for murder that easily after all...

What IS this game?

Reactor 09 is a short adventure game modelled after those Lucas Arts games the kids were crazy about a decade ago.

!ATTENTION! - Read before downloading:

-This game is for a more mature audience only. There's animated blood and cursing and stuff like that.

-The game's dialogue is still a little wonky. ProgZmax, a friendly member of the AGS community read through the whole script and fixed it (Thanks!). This edited version should be available in a day or two.

-If the original version doesn't work for you, try this one: http://www.origamihero.com/r09272.zip

This game was made with Adventure Game Studio. See http://www.bigbluecup.com for more info about AGS.

Wow, great. This deserves GOTW!

Yay for Monkey Island!

Posted by JMT 9th December, 2006

Pretty good story, visuals. The play is a bit linear, though(common problem with adventure games).

Posted by DaVince 9th December, 2006

Okay, I'm pretty stuck at fixing the third part of the reactor now: releasing the pressure.

Posted by Willy C 9th December, 2006

pretty good. Thumb up. But I didn't understand what he said about the machine where I have to adjust the x,y and z coordinates. Too technical. Still, great game!

Posted by DaVince 9th December, 2006

It means you have to find the deepest point in the pipe. Click the small info button for more information about that x,y,z stuff.

Posted by Jimbob 9th December, 2006

Did anyone get the good good ending yet?

Posted by Beau 9th December, 2006

I have gotten all 4 endings! Every one of them is worth getting, but the best one is by far the best, so keep trying!

Posted by Ski 9th December, 2006

Omg this is beautiful.

Posted by renkin 9th December, 2006

This looks very nice! And you're amazingly productive. Hopefully someday I'll get myself to actually make one of the games I have in my head.

Posted by -Liam- 9th December, 2006

Hey, great game!

Posted by bernie[FA] 9th December, 2006

Thanks for the kind words, everyone!

There's a hints thread at the AGS Forums: http://n ew.bigbluecup.com/yabb/index.php?topic=29345.0

Check that place if you're stuck or PM me. I'd rather not post solutions here without a spoiler feature.

Posted by bernie[FA] 9th December, 2006

Oh, oops. I can't get that link to display right. Just copy and paste it and delete the space between n and ew.

Posted by renkin 9th December, 2006

Or: http://tinyurl.com/yznugw

Great game, btw. I just finished it, but apparently didn't get the best ending.

Posted by bernie[FA] 9th December, 2006

If your trust bar is above or equal 50% at the reactor site, you only need to solve some additional puzzles to get the good ending.

Thanks for that tiny link thing!

Posted by Ganymede Graphics 9th December, 2006

wow no thumbs down

Posted by Peblo 10th December, 2006

Oh no I better change that.

Posted by bernie[FA] 10th December, 2006

Hey Peblo, you make it sound like you voted thumbs down because there was no vote like that yet. That would be kind of a weird thing to do.

Posted by renkin 10th December, 2006

Indeed it would. Unfair, even.

Posted by bernie[FA] 10th December, 2006

Possibly, but there's still a chance he just voted down because he didn't like it. Which would be perfectly fine.

Posted by OptimisticMat 10th December, 2006

Thanks for putting the whole homosexuality theme in there, and extra thanks for making it so subtle. I'm sure a lot of people will appreciate that.

Awesome game all together. I enjoyed the multiple endings!

Posted by sean cameron 10th December, 2006

I love this game. I'm so envious of your pixely talents, Bernie.

Posted by renkin 10th December, 2006

Bernie: Yes, if that's the case, it's fine of course. I find it unlikely to not like it, though.

And yeah, the subtle gay theme added both humor and depth, in my opinion. In general, I really like the characters and the way the story is presented. A lot of the puzzles are really cool, too, as well as logical. I have yet to try to achieve the good ending, though. I'll probably do it tomorrow, but I also like the ending I already got. All in all, a really captivating little adventure.

Also, Bernie, for a minor complaint: Some of the puzzles could be more enjoyable if their premises were more explicitly stated. A couple of times I figured out a puzzle by trying more or less random things, and afterwards realized the solution was really very logical, only the game didn't wasn't very clear in giving me the premises to figure it out. I have a couple of examples, but since they are spoilers, I could PM them to you instead if you want?

Maybe it's just me that's stupid, but there's also a possibility it's something you might want to think about for future adventure games.

Posted by bernie[FA] 11th December, 2006

Sure, PM away!

Posted by Spiriax 11th December, 2006

This game is awesome Bernie. I've played alot of games that you've made now, and I gotta say you rock.
I haven't made it through the game yet but I'm working on it.

I hope I can get something up soon on this site myself, if I do you could return the favour...

Posted by DaVince 11th December, 2006

Finally finished it, and got two endings.

Bernie, you rock.

Posted by Dustin Gunn 11th December, 2006

Great while it lasted. Some pretty minor annoyances:

-The measuring device is unintuitive, I didn't know what I was measuring for. You use the word "deepest" but that doesn't mean much, and it'd be helpful if I knew I was testing for the bottom lip.

-Every time you have the plural of CO you add an apostrophe, like "CO's," just a very minor pet peeve of mine.

-The "good ending" is really the last act of the game, so it's frustrating that to get it involves an unintuitive solution to getting the #3 item.

Posted by bernie[FA] 12th December, 2006

Thanks for the feedback! They're all valid points.

I didn't want the player to see the last part without putting some work into it. I guess this is always tough to do in games. And those who've seen one of the worse endings may think there isn't more to it and stop playing.

Posted by Noyb 12th December, 2006

Awesome game. Nice graphics and fun puzzles. The only thing I had to look online for was how to unlock the last part. The main character isn't an amnesiac, right? Why would he need all those reminders to piece it all together?

Posted by Guy Bramsworth 13th December, 2006

I've found a small bug, though seeing as some have passed the game I'm confused why it's happening for me..

After I get through the pipe and have to use a plastic bag over my head, I can't seem to move at all once I put it on. Is this a bug or not?

Posted by Guy Bramsworth 13th December, 2006

OK, so it wasn't a glitch but rather I had to do something else. You make us work alot Bernie!

Posted by bernie[FA] 13th December, 2006

Noyb: He's not piecing it together, but without those items, he doesn't really think he can go back and make a change. Well, that was the idea, anyway.

Posted by DaVince 13th December, 2006

Okay, so you said there are four endings. I played till where I shot that other guy. Is that the last ending, or...?

Posted by bernie[FA] 13th December, 2006

The ending after that sequence will depend on if Clyde dies or not.

Posted by DaVince 13th December, 2006

Oh yeah, I got those two endings. So those are the last, more-effort endings?

Posted by bernie[FA] 13th December, 2006

Yep! There's another one when you have below 50% trust and end the game normally and one more in the reactor's control room if you have -30 or below.

Posted by gemugemu 15th December, 2006

Oh yeah ! Very good graphics !
Ahah ! Reminds me lot of Lucas Games !
So good !
I'll try to play more to your game but already:
Congratulations !

Posted by DaVince 15th December, 2006

Congratulations? lol

Posted by renkin 15th December, 2006

To GOTW maybe? In advance.

Posted by Dogzer 16th December, 2006

i voted thumbs up

Posted by phanto 16th December, 2006

"Oh no I better change that."

Retard.

Some of the puzels are crafty, really make you look around. I like the 'think about this stuff' aproach to game play.

One puzzle in partucular has me stumped, and it seems to be a common issue reading through the coments. Thats the "Level Measuring Device" My interpretation of the deepest part of the Pipe would be up a little from the device and in a bit, assuming that Y = +6 puts you over the pipe, and Z = +6 Puts you deeper then the pipe, Y3,Z3 would put you 'about center' wich would be the deepest mesurable section of pipe. However, I apear to be incorect

I think That Miss Walter could be a tad more helpfull on the subject as well, since the puzzle its self isnt so intuitive.

-------

Objects hidden, or that show up 'later' is a nice touch, giving you reasons to re explore old zones.

All in all I give it 9/10 Very well done, Music, Imagry, Gameplay. Well worth the Download, and time spend playing.

Keep up the great work, Looking forward to seeing your next Creation.

Posted by renkin 27th December, 2006

I found the level measuring device puzzle very nice, actually, because it provides you with all the information you need, but you need to do some genuine problem solving to come up with the solution. The problem starts already with figuring out what a reasonable definition of the "deepest" point of the pipe would be. There's only one answer there, really, if you think about it. Then you have to think about things like what the position (0,0,0) is, look at the placement of the device, do some step-by-step testing and analyze the results, etc. So you could call it unintuitive, but it's not ambiguous. And its unintuitive nature only makes it more of a problem to solve. So, really good puzzle, I have to say. I'd like more of that kind in any adventure game.

Posted by renkin 27th December, 2006

Well, it actually had one flaw: Too few possible combinations for it to be futile to use brute force (that is, guess until correct).
