Here it is, BONESAW: THE GAME.

In a far off land, the Golden Knights hockey team is preparing for a big game against their rivals the St. Lawrence Saints. They've been training for days, and now they are ready to head home.

Suddenly out of nowhere, the evil head Ref has appeared. Using some sort of mysterious power, he traps the Golden Knights in a different dimension. The ref claims that he is tired of the endless harassment he recieves from the Golden Knight fans in their home ice.

But one Golden Knight had remained, as he was out retrieving Pulled Pork Sandwiches for the head coach of the Knights. Upon returning, he realizes that his team has gone missing. The Coach tells him what happened, and gives the lone Golden Knight the task of tracking down this Ref, no matter where it may take him.

You, the lone Golden Knight are the only hope! How will you ever pull this off? If there was only some sort of legendary weapon you could summon forth in your time of need...

Bonesaw is Ready!

*******
Yeah, the file is huge, sorry. The game is like 23 megs and the music is the rest!

If you're experiencing *really bad* lag, please wait just 2 weeks or so and I'll see if I can put up a temporary HWA beta. The beta will not display some things correctly, but its probably worth the compromise if you want to play it smooth.
********

Also, Josh Whelchel did the music!

****** Version 1.1 ******
A few minor bugs were brought to my attention, including some involving the player's total puck count on certain levels, so if you're reading this then I suggest downloading the new version (It should be up on the same link) and just replacing the old one. This should not erase your save file, but just in case you might want to keep the files "save" and "data" in a safe place.

Hey Adam, it's easy. Try using a weapon that flys through things.

Posted by Dr. James MD 14th February, 2008

Haven't played too much into it yet, but combat without a weapon feels a little too precise to get a hit.

Thumbs up for not breaking the controls so joypad users can play it! It's a good game to sit back to.

Posted by »xerus 14th February, 2008

Dr. James, there is an issue with control pad... it comes later in the game, where you can get frozen, thats why I suggest using Joy2Key (mentioned in the readme.) Or you'll be frozen for longer than you'd like to be.

Spiriax: Link should be working, still works at my end.

Oh, I just deleted the post so I could post a new instead of just editing it. That might get confusing.

Odd! I cannot connect to Bonesaw.org, my computer says I have to connect to some weird network (although maybe that ain't related as that damn network-thingy pops now and then when I'm surfing! :S )

Could you or someone please be really really kind and fix some alternate link / mirror?

Oh, never mind! I entered kylepulver.com and found a mirror there. Thoughtful.
Now I will enjoy!

Pretty darn good, but some of the combat situations aren't perfect. For example, if you're overlapping another "person" enemy, your punches won't connect...then you have to turn around, back up, and try from a little farther away. Also, some of the level design feels arbitrary...like no real direction, just fall or jump until eventually a door appears. But the graphics are great, then animations smooth, and the engine solid. Great job!

Oh yeah, and how exactly does the bonesaw work? It seems like the more I hit a guy, the more the bonesaw meter gets drained. And also--the transitory "action" scenes (getting the bonesaw, for example) are WAY too long...

I think you'll enjoy the levels more as the game progresses, as I cant deny the fact that the first set of levels are designed to be pretty simple.

The overlapping hitbox thing is something I worked on for awhile, but I just couldnt make it ... well, make sense. The player would punch, and still hit enemies behind him or over him, and it just seemed to make some things bug out.

The bonesaw gets energy when you hit someone. It should be jumping up a little bit when you hit someone with it, theres no reason it would be going down other than its constant drain.

And about the long drawn out action thing, this game started out as just a joke between my friends and I, and the overdramatic summon of the bonesaw is something that was a must. I guess certain folk never grow tired of it, but some do ;p

Kazuma, don't give it a bad rating just cuz it's a .rar file

*Update* This morning I downloaded Bonesaw, played the tutorial, and liked it. Then I fired up my PS3 and downloaded the new "Lost Planet" demo - a critically acclaimed 3D shooter that probably cost over 10 million dollars to make. After playing Lost Planet I thought to myself: what a waste of cash, Bonesaw is better than this!

It makes more sense now xerus, I keep forgetting about the backstory--it is pretty funny now that I know it's intentional (you should have goku's voice in the background powering up, "wahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!")

But yeah, when I first hit a guy the bonesaw goes to about 80%, then the next time I hit him (immediately) it cuts to about 50%, and with each successive hit the counter decreases. Weird...

Posted by mojofltr 15th February, 2008

;o; On my PC, the game quits after the configuration screen.

I wondered if the in-game directory and file referencing didn't like spaces or long filenames, so I copied the directory to c:/ . The game works now.

Wow, this is great! I've only beaten the first two bosses, but it's been great fun so far. The Bonesaw is perhaps a bit too powerful though, in my opinion. I mean, it's fair against normal enemies, but killing a boss in only five hits seems a bit cheap to me.

That, and the occasionally screwy collision boxes are my only complaints so far. But still, we see very few games as good as this on TDC these days. I'd feel bad giving you anything less than five stars for this. Now, back to the game!

^ I agree, the Bonesaw is too strong and takes too long to get. It does feel like FF7 building up them limit breaks, which is very very good.

Some of the music reminds me of the Final Countdown which is never a bad thing

Va1entine, WinRAR can manage zip files better than WinZip can. You can use the right click menu on the desktop or a folder to create a .rar or .zip archive. The Zip archives are compatible with WinZIP.

I haven't played through the whole game yet ... but, here's my take on this game:

This is my new favorite Klik game. Last one was Smash Face Volley. But from the little bit i've played, i think this one beats it.

Anyone who gives this any less than 5 stars must be extremely jealous, or just never played a Klik-made or any fan-made games before, lol.

This game is as good or maybe even better than the classics like Mega Man, SMB, and Kirby. Someone has finally done what I said should be done with games ... Mix the Best of the Styles. And that's clearly what Xerus did with this title.

I do have a few little quirks that i wouldn't mind seeing in there though. For one, I wish i could hit the bombs from the cannons back at them, or catch them and snub the fuse out. And it seems they are invincible ? I like to be able ta Destroy everything.

I'll probably find a few more little things as i play on, but I have to say that this is one of the first platformers made with a Klik product that doesn't irritate the living Hell outta me. And that's a very very good thing.

Also, one more thing that made me vote 4 instead of 5: I don't think Whelchel's musics fit this game very well. I know that he's a talented composer and I love his music, but somehow IMO Bonesaw could've had some more retro-like musics. Maybe that's because always I play this, I think I'm playing Kirby, I don't know

Posted by axel 16th February, 2008
Rated :

Yea, I know what you mean, Hempuli. But I think it's alright. The music is some variety of chip-inspired techno, with lots of C64-style arpeggios and stuff, but the graphics are not strictly retro either. So it gives it a sort of neo-retro feel; it's retro-inspired, but done in a modern fashion.

No, I think Whelchel's done a great job on the soundtrack. I must admit that I haven't been a great fan of his previous works, but I was positively surprised this time; the music is spot-on.

Va1entine: if you remove Winzip and install WinRAR you'll end up having a program that's way better than Winzip. If you uninstall both and install 7-zip you end up having a program way better than both. All are made for the same purpose, but 7-zip is the smallest, least bloated and most feature rich of them all.

"What's this your catchphrase DaVince?"
No, because I don't beta test much and I usually do test well.

Wonderful game

There's some kind of magic that just brings this all together. Great concept, well executed, and pretty solid.

I haven't played past the first 2 or 3 levels, but the combat could use a little work. There's no way to tell when an enemy hockey player is going to attack. The firebreathing things, on the other hand, are great, because you get a chance to evade, rather than get hit whilst you're executing a combo.

I'm afraid to rate it now. As it stands I'd give it 4/5. I don't think some things fit and the emulated NES style has some inconsistencies. The games great fun but the collision detector feels a little off for me and makes regular combat a little clumsy.

I don't know if you're up for releasing an update to fix some of the small problems. Because then it would be a 5/5 no doubt.

Me too actually. I want to give it a high score because I know how hard its been worked on, but then there's still things that bug me about this game

Infact Ill contribute my list of likes and dislikes, lol

Likes:
Some of the graphics, music and the fact that it's well coded and produced.

Dislikes:
I have to agree with Danjo on the style of the sprites.
The concept...it just seems... boring...

Speaking of which, If Im truthful, I can't actually play this game for 5 minutes without quiting. I find using bombs quite clever sometimes, but usually it seems to get pretty repetative...

The enemies.. well, I just have to stand amongst them and mash my keys and hope that I beat them Usually though, I just jump over them. I get little enjoyment out of fighting them, if I'm honest.

Other than that, this is really well made, welldone!

The ball disappeared once I'd hit a switch one time. The new bricks that appeared covered it up or something, and the ball just vanished behind them I do find it frustrating in the collision when you overlap someone and you miss.. that shouldn't be hard to fix though, should you chose to.

Also I think you should have let the two buttons be customizable, just to ensure that people with crazy keyboards are still able to play as comfortably I'd really rate this 4.5/5, but since it doesn't quite make 5 for me I'll have to give it four.

After spending a good twenty hours on it in the past few days, I can conclude that this game is amazing. It takes me back to some much simpler times of gaming, times that I sorely miss. Great job with the game I enjoy it immensely.

I don't understand... is the music WAV or something? Because it sounds like it could be MIDI, at least ogg. But who cares, 60mb isn't big in this day and age.

It seems a bit strange to make a game that mimics an 8 bit game yet have it so large.
But I'm sure most people will agree it's worth it.

Say it Mocho king "BONESAW"!!!!!!!!!!! This is awesome, its halo 2 all over again!!!!!!!!!!!

Well drawn and one of the best game engines i've seen! I love Mocho Kings voice when he says "Bonesaw"! (is he still called Mocho King i haven't watch wrestling since i was a kid, lol anyone remember the "MEGA POWER"?) At first before i actually played the game and just read the story i thought it was abit poo, but after playing i think its ace and very well put together!

Small constructive criticisms, and i do mean small, i didn't like the sound effect with the writing at the bottem of the screen & wasn't keen on the real pictures of the wrestler, would be better with out!!!

Anyway this game is "Keanu Reeves"! 5 STARS BABY!!!!

Damn that 15 golden puck level is pretty hard! I just finished like one or two snow levels. Have not beaten ehr, what is inside the 15 golden puck level (not spoiling anything ofcourse).

Let's just say th- BONESAW IS READYYYYYY

Maisnon . It's got 3 more golden pucks inside of it, and something else that's pretty much worth your time. (;

This is the most fun I've had with a platformer in a long while. The search for hidden items makes the levels a lot more interesting, and the enemies are quite a challenge.

I'm stuck on the penguin boss right now, but I'm sure I'll get it if I keep trying.

This game makes me seriously depressed... There is so much awesomeness in it, yet its so bad it almost makes me cry.
Why? Because it WAAAAAY too difficult.
Not in a, good challenging way neither, in the "try and die"-way.

Every once in a while there are these really overkill places, that can't possibly have been meant for anyone to be able to clear on the first try (which is unprofessional).
Then there are like these really long and time-eating (not to mention slightly hazarduss) paths that you have to walk through, just to get into some really amazingly bad-ass deathtrap in the end. If you die (and you will do that A LOT) you have to do it all over again (and if you die three times, which is fairly easily done, you have to start over from even further back in the game).

I constantly get this feeling of making degress rather than progress, and that is not the kind of feelings that make me happy with a game.

The graphics are really good, but it is too repetative (until you get into space, those graphics makes a well needed contrast to what has previously been seen, for a long time, in different colours).

The bosses are easily finished off with the bonesaw (which is not at all overpowered, every inch of greatness that's in it is well needed), but you want that middle-puck anyway, so what's the point?

I feel that the contols are not quite sensitive enough, considering what delicate moves that differ minimum success from total disaster. I even think that the jump-button doesn't answers all the time, maybe just my imagination...

I want to play this thing fullscreen, but I don't want it to slow down on the really big areas (increasing the risk of cruel, sudden, DEATH even more). Must all objects really be loaded at the same time (I can play Crysis on this baby, so don't whine about me having a pesky computer)?

Why do I keep playing this thing, if it makes me feel so bad... Well, there are, as I said these really awesome things... Like the music and the sound, and the bonesaw and the picture of that wrestler and the plot, and the well coded engine...

I have not completed it (I don't know if I take anymore of it :´( ), so I will not rate it. I think it's quite obvious to anyone that this is much more than your average click-game anyway...

And, btw...
Click gamers do not whish, only, to make minimalistic games with shitty sound cvality.
.06gb is not a big file...
If you think so, your internet connection is too slow.

I'll agree with you guys on the difficulty stuff. This game is a slight bit hard for the first-timer. Give it a little practice in the beginning on making those hits and the jumps and you'll be better off. There is a learning curve that goes with the game as you progress.

Adam > The springs work for me all the time, you just have to hit them right. A quirk that I found annoying. ):<

Posted by Zezard 21st February, 2008

Josh. Who are you? The lord of the "wasd"?
This game is not a "slight bit hard" for the "first-timer".
It's a brain-blaster for the veteran!

I wouldn't say that at all. I just played this game a lot before it came out... enough such that I guess I got the hang of it eventually. I don't really recall how long that process took...

Anywho, I just meanted for the first-time bonesaw player, nothing serious. I'll agree, it's a ridiculously hard game.

How do you kill the first boss?

Posted by Josh Whelchel 23rd February, 2008

Tim > kick the bomb from the sign. There is an oddly colored tile where you are supposed to kick from. Hold right and press x to do the kick move.

The first boss will jump in the air. Jump when he lands to avoid being stunned and getting hit by the shockwave. After that, he will start to move towards you. Jump OVER him when he does that, then he'll throw his fist. Hit him then as much as you can.

Haha, VERY hard to get. I don't want to ruin the secret for you, but in the upside down instance of that level go left before you exit. I can't recall where the other one is, but I'm sure you won't have too much trouble finding it.

Hey guys, I just got back from Game Developers Conference-- it was exciting to meet people who had actually heard of or even played Bonesaw: The Game! I see Josh has everything under control here... haha, but I really do appreciate all of the feedback I get.

I'll be looking into some hitbox modifications, but I cant make any promises as the whole hitbox system is pretty deeply coded into the game and it spans a good 200+ frames. I also have to go ahead and start my next project soon, but I wont be abandoning Bonesaw or anything like that.

Thanks for all the comments and feedback, and thanks for playing.

Bonesaw is awesome the way it is.

Move on to your next project and make it as kickass as Bonesaw is !!!

Go Go Go !

Can't wait to see your next game, if it's anything like this one, it'll be on my computer for a long time.

P.S. any chance I could get an open-source copy ?

I wanna make a game alot like this, but not a platformer.

Im sorry, but I feel the "learning curve" Josh is talking about is just an excuse for bad gameplay, really painfully bad in some cases.

The three is for reasonable graphics, reasonably good coding (still don't like how I can't attack when overlapping) and some interesting level layouts.

I gave up at the first room you can reach that you must have a certain number of golden pucks to enter. I had been trying for hours but kept falling down the same few jumps and, being the completionist that I am, I wouldn't go further.

The idea behind the Bonesaw power up is okay, but of course, it makes boss fights much more boring.
It's almost a necessity to have the Bonesaw ready to be able to beat them or at least have the hockey stick so you'll be able to reach them with minimal danger to yourself.

You have great graphics (Amazing, actually) and presentation, and the engine is top-notch too, but the levels seem rather sporadic in terms of difficulty, and the design of some of the enemies seem poor (How about the fire breathing enemies that will probably hit you before you even manage to get up to them? Or the human enemies who will sometimes walk so close to you that you can't hit them?)

On a side note: I completely can't stand those buttons you have to put the ball onto. It took me two lives before I finally managed to get past one that a bomb shooting cannon was near.
Which reminds me, the cannons that shoot bombs were inconsistent as well.
Some of them you have to kick to be able to continue, some of them explode on contact.
There's no visual variation between the two, so I don't quite understand the sense in this.

Thanks for the game all the same, parts of it were enjoyable. I look forward to your future games!

Just a quick response:
"Some of them you have to kick to be able to continue, some of them explode on contact.
There's no visual variation between the two, so I don't quite understand the sense in this. "

There is visual variation, actually. While the fuse is burning on the bombs (emitting the small like 8x8 fire sprites) it will explode on contact. After the bomb stops emitting those sprites, it will no longer explode until its timer expires (after it flashes red and white for a second)

One of the problems I have with this is a conceptual one. It makes a lot of internal references to things seemingly intended to people in your locality. Of course I guess this isn't an inherent flaw if you're making it for them, but putting this much effort into a game, it's a little sad it's not more globally appealing.

Even though it has a background in "Hockey", the gameplay itself has little or nothing to do with it. People that are put off by "hockey" might not be bothered play it even though the game itself would be fine for them. There's something kind of uncomfortable about this in general. The whole hockey thing seems thrown in. it doesn't even make much sense within the sense of the game world, it doesn't look like a place you'd find colleges, it seems very wild.

The other problem I had was that in the intro it wasn't quite clear what was happening. It is mentioned that someone is missing and then you take control of presumably that person. Something feels a bit disjointed about this.

Why does the Space area have to be so BASTARD HARD? I've played probably 20 times only the first stage of it and haven't beaten it yet! Either those super teleporting enemies shoot you into the beams that will one-shot you, or when you get launched away by those "catapults" if you don't hold in the right direction you just fall down and die!
Oh and some enemies are so stupidly coded, as soon as they've been hit, they shoot, and so if you hit them in air, if you don't jump IMMEDIATELY when landing you WILL take damage. And that is so frustrating in the Space area with those super green dudes, shooting beams that reaches the whole screen.
Why do I keep playing it? Because I wanna beat it, but it's so frustrating!
