Some of you may or may not know about the software kalled Keyhole, that's basically satellitle mapping software. It carries a subscription price and all that, but I'm here to tell you about one that's free, though not quite as good.

http://worldwind.arc.nasa.gov/

It's a recently abanded NASA project, you can basically zoom in on the world. I can't put it any simpler, I was able to find my apartment. Check it out, though it's a 185 meg download, and does require you to be online for the more detailed pictures.

heh, good one shab, but i don't think it was necessary, because there's no coordinates or street names present to lead anyone to that location in the picture, there's not enough information for any pedos trying to look for 22 yr olds , an address is more leading, but not this

yes there were coordinates up there, they'd just have to calculate where the hell that was But who the hell would do that instead of just going to the nearest park and snatch some small 11-year old girl (like that Saaya Irie )

Boo and hiss, it only has low-res shots of the UK. I read Google will eventually have hi-res shots of Europe so I'll hold out till then. I do enjoy mucking around with these satellite things though.

Keyhole was bought out by google, and they are renaming it Google Earth. I have the beta version which is so damn amazing I waste hours every day on it.

Google Earth has two databases, primary and legacy. The primary one is the newest, which added at least 15 meter resolution to the entire world. Also in major cities they have 3D buildings in addition to the 3D terrain.

They also now have address lookup for Canada, and the UK.

This is my house

Image

Aiea Hawaii isn't that important so it's at a lesser resolution.

Image

In Google Earth, formerly Keyhole, you can tilt the camera angle to see the terrain. I live 800' up next to a forest reserve.

Image

This is Honolulu, the capital of Hawaii.

Image

This is it with 3D buildings turned on, you can see the height and shape of them.

Image

And this is for pete, thats how High res the UK is now!

Fit... fancy doing a capture of:

Lat:
50:47:08N (50.7855)
Lon:
1:57:37W (-1.9603)

So I can see my house?

Edit: I downloaded the trial and can only get a really low-res shot of the area where I live. Sigh.

Here it is (or something that's roughly in the same area that fits the common descriptions exactly)

One of the thing's that I like about this (The Nasa one) is it has multiple maps. Ex.
Image
An older survey I'm sure. But the whole restricted airspace area is blocked out, I'm pretty sure that's it.

My bad pete, i just thought about how incredibly creepy it is that getting driving directions to your house is so easy.

Willy, no it's not live, Google Earth aka Keyhole updates every so often, the oldest of the pictures will be about 4 years.

I don't know about worldwind, but generally they have lesser resolution, less coverage, and less updated. Also less features such as address look up / driving directions.

And the Nasa one is like 6 or seven different sattelite surveys taken over the years, though I'm sure that one or two of them are still updated occasionally.

Like I said, it takes a long time to update. If you're a 56k'er I'd suggest not getting this program, not only cause the massive size, but cause it also takes a while to download all the images (Takes about 15 minutes on my 3mb cable to load an area)

Get the free 7-day version of keyhole/google earth. After you try it I can assure you that you'll see the value in shelling out a measely $30 a year for this wonderful service.

If anything google will be integrating google maps into keyhole. Keyhole is way faster, easier, and powerful, so I don't think google maps will be in competition with keyhole.

Google Earth/Keyhole will be competing against MSN Earth, i'm not sure when it's coming out.
