Like I said, it takes a long time to update. If you're a 56k'er I'd suggest not getting this program, not only cause the massive size, but cause it also takes a while to download all the images (Takes about 15 minutes on my 3mb cable to load an area)
Get the free 7-day version of keyhole/google earth. After you try it I can assure you that you'll see the value in shelling out a measely $30 a year for this wonderful service.

I was under the impression Google are going to release it for free? After all they already have high-res sat images for North America on their maps service - http://www.google.com/maps
If anything google will be integrating google maps into keyhole. Keyhole is way faster, easier, and powerful, so I don't think google maps will be in competition with keyhole.
Google Earth/Keyhole will be competing against MSN Earth, i'm not sure when it's coming out.
