Game of the Week Winner

This is my entry for Peblo's competition, round 3! This is a fully text-based first person shooter, designed to be played via keyboard (and of course, some mouse). Controls should be fairly intuitive to anyone who's played a FPS before, and yes, I am fully aware that my game will run at maybe ~25 FPS and lag horribly on your computer. This is the cost of having to rush a game . But thats just the method I used for parsing the text, using textures is actually quite a bit faster.

Three Guns:
Plasma Rifle!
Minigun!
Rocket Luncher!

Only a single kind of enemy!

Play the game before you ask any question or comment on it! Its really worth the download~ Made in MMF1.5, 2008 Pixelthief

I'd like to note this game has a very "Epic" soundtrack, in keeping with the compo's theme

Okay. I really loved the game but this must be said. I keep my wave volume on the lowest setting as its so loud. When the music in this game starts it bumps the slider in volume control right up to the top, I had my earphones on went deaf for a while.

ANYWAY, I absolutly LOVE this game! So ingenius! Sorry to start with a bad comment but gameplay and "graphics" really stike a perfect chord with me.

Top banana.

JOHN SHOTTED A DEMON! JOHN SHOTTED A DEMON! JOHN SHOTTED A DEMON! JOHN SHOTTED A DEMON!

Yeah I forgot to adjust the volume on the DMC2 object, but thats not a big enough deal to change i guess. Its a fickle extension. But I kind of wanted it to really kick in when the sudden "plot twist" hits I feel bad I had to release this without figuring what was lagging it. If I comment out the text based stuff and revert it to my texture based engine, it chugs along at 45-50 fps! I've got a few optimizations to write that should keep it at 50, so I can make a full wolfenstein.

It seemed to run fine for me, but it's quite hard to tell whats going on, let alone the frame rate.
It's quite hard to tell what the baddies are at first, and they seemed to either get stuck on walls a lot or were just good at hiding just around the corner

This IS epic btw.

are you going to release the source?

Yes, this is epic. I liked it a lot, especially the graphics. I realize it's just a concept, but I couldn't have fun with it, sorry.

Epic, good 'Epic' choice in music mate

On a serious note, this game is fantastic! The controls are perfect, the gameplay forces the player to explore and hunt the enemies and the weapons are good to use. Sound effects are fitting and as i've said the soundtrack is 'Epic'!

The engine is only let down by the comical use of text strings for the walls which made my eyes bleed after 5 minutes or so - a change to more conventional textures would bump this to 5 stars for sure.

Masterpiece in the making, then! Excellent work and easily GOTW, even in a more competitive week.

Framerate was beautifully smooth.

I love how it's basically a parody of people complaining that FPS have no innovation. Haha.

Posted by erghhhhx 14th September, 2008

The is kinda' amazing, you know?

Got 22 points..

GOTW for sure, but still very hard to rate.

Posted by Pixelthief 14th September, 2008

the engine is actually kind of elegant, especially with the additions I've made since then, but the actual game I put together in a single sitting last night, like the enemies, powerups, copy/pasted story, etc. its more an exploration of an *idea*

Seriesly Pixelthief was you on some sort of acid trip when you created this? I was honestly especting a nice little text adventure game not a Doom style 3D game with matrix code everywhere! It felt like i was Neo and i could see the Matrix! I did enjoy it though and i was very impressed with your 3d engine! Good job!

This was awesome, I have no idea how you did the text walls and such, just plain cool

This deserves a 5

Really i have NO idea, how you did this. Which product did you use and can you give us at least a littlebit information, how you did this?

Posted by izac 16th September, 2008

It's not a bad game.

Music was a really bad idea, I was expecting some game music no a real song. Wasn't so sure on the mouse handling it was way to sensitive, if you play a lot of FPS like me you'll know how it feels.

Overall pretty nice, 3/5

This is amazing! Quite insane, highest form of beauty and art I have ever seen!

Posted by ben mercer 20th September, 2008

This is pretty cool!

The only thing is that you should use a control object for the keypresses because when there is slowdown then there can be a large control response delay which screws up the gameplay.

Lol, this is an awesome game. I'd give it 5 stars, but -1 for not much gameplay, and -1 because I don't want to be embarrassed in the future for giving it 4 stars once everyone starts making one

Still, it's a thing of beauty. At least for today.

This is amazing! Although when you press an arrow key or shoot it takes a while for it to actually take action.

This game is VERY good! Great job! The music was cool.

I wonder what the words say...

Best 3D imitation engine i've seen made with a click product. Put in real textures and you would be on par with wolfenstein 3d or even doom.
