My mouse could squeeze out of the bars, so the entire garage was his home. He just went back to the cage to sleep and be fed. We also had a guineapig who spent a very happy life on the lawn all summer, squeaking and birbling away to the squirrels. Our pets were cool -- they always have attitude. My G.Pig stalked and pounced on a cat! Never seen a feline so scared! Pets are lovely things, and a great way for young children to experience the joy of companionship with animals, as well as teaching them respect for their welfare. I think you can mistreat them as much as you like as long as you don't kill them because then you'd have a dead squirell to clean up.
