So, my friend has a 32 GB First Generation iPod Touch for sale for $175. Is this a good buy?, cause I was thinking about getting it. I don't really know what else to say.

Well that's a little over half of the price of a new 32GB. It's better than anything you'll get on ebay but I'd at least wing a lowball. Say "since it is 1st gen and all..."

Tried it. He insists on the price. Wants to make it $180 to include the wall charger.

Comes down to whether you need 32GB of space or a newer generation.

I'm still not too sure what's so amazing about the Touch. Most of the features require Wifi and the only place besides maybe Subway that have Wifi is my house and we have 3 computers. If you need a lot of space, buy a Zune 120, if you want something cheap, but an expensive retail MP3 player.

The touch is better than the Zune in my opinion (I have tried them both).
Zune is great for music, but that's pretty much it really. Most of the apps on the iTunes store work with the touch, and it is also a great music player. The selling point for me was the games and apps, which I haven't stopped downloading since I bought my touch. And although you might need a WiFi connection for a lot of stuff, many places like pubs, clubs and shops now have WiFi (at least where I live).

It just depends whether you want a 1st generation iPod Touch - I'm not sure on the differences between the 2nd gen one, but I'm guessing speed is a factor. Other than that, it's a really good deal.

This is a signature. Have this one on me.

Yep. That's why I convinced my brother to buy one. It's really entertaining to just browse the app store every other day to see what stuff comes out. The fact that it can play music? Pff, just a bonus. I seem to recall some apps saying they needed the 2nd generation touch to work, but I might be imagining things.

Also, as for the wifi... you don't need wifi to use it as an ipod. And there are a ton of apps you can use without wifi. That's just looking for excuses to not like it.

I guess it also comes down to where you want to spend your money and how you want to use the device.

I personally don't have too many places around here that I visit that have Wifi besides my own house, and I also hate the idea of spending a ton of money on music. $15 a month gets me unlimited music downloads, which for some might not seem like a good deal, but I'm always downloading a ton of new music and before the end of the month, I can choose 10 of the songs to keep DRM-Free. So I much rather own a Zune.

Your second sentence answered the first sentence. If you don't have any reason (or even ability) to access the new features then of course you're not going to see what's good about it.

It's a lot of money for a 32Gb mp3 player. But if you use it to its potential then it can easily be one of the best electronic things you could spend that $175 on.

Think, realistically, about how you'll use it every day. I bought the iPod Touch to use at work (presentations), Skype, for the convenience of checking e-mail quickly in the house and for the apps. Basically, a lot of its functions I use in the same way I would use a laptop. If you'll only use it as an mp3 player then don't buy it.

The fact that it's only 1st generation is something you should look into for sure. I think Apple made some pretty big improvements since then. If memory serves me correctly, there's no volume control on the side of the 1st gen iPod Touch. Most importantly, I think they also they beefed up the wifi speed from "painfully slow" to "very usable".

The iTouch is a PDA that plays music. I've got a 2nd gen, and I use the thing all the time. Quick bouts of gaming, looking stuff up without dragging the laptop out, texting with friends, and watching video. You do lose a lot of functionality without the wifi, but even in my little town in northern Colorado I can leech off the tons of wireless networks while I'm out and about.

There's probably a lot more wireless networks around you than you think Brandon, I was shocked at how many unsecured networks were all around my town. (iTouch makes it easy to check for networks while on a walk or such similar.)

You could always just get an iphone then wifi won't be an issue.
Now that I have one I just can't live without it!

All right so I talked to my dad to get permission to use my money and he didn't like the idea of buying it used. However, he did give me the option of buying whatever else. So I'm thinking of a multitude of possibilities: a Nintendo DSi, PSP Go, iPod Touch, or Zune HD. Of course I'm open to suggestions.

Considering priorities, I usually just play games. I don't have a wireless internet connection, but there's a school, a grocery store, and a laundromat nearby with internet, as well as my neighbor who's internet connection seems to be selective. I like music as long as I don't have to pay a bunch 'cause I don't have much money to begin with (need to go to college next year, you know). Anyways, yeah.

EDIT: I have a 2GB SD card for that DSi as well. I already have a cell phone.

It doesn't sound like you're going to use the iPod Touch's PDA-features a lot. My suggestion would be to get a cheap mp3 player (perhaps one that takes SD cards) and a DS lite (DSi if you can afford it, but phatty/lite will do)
