I'm in shock.
Bernie Mac's died today aged 50 because of complications related to pneumonia.
I doubt nobody ever head of him, he had a great show the bernie mac show (which I loved btw), plus he entered in several highly known movies like Ocean's Eleven and Charlie's Angels, and another one with ashton kutcher I don't remember the name.
I woke up today to the sound of my father yelling across the house to my mother that Bernie Mac died. It is rather sad, he was funny... Also, RIP that one US volleyball coach's in-law that was stabbed in Beijing.
its sad that you only know him because of his show and he was in some movies. you should know him because of his stand-up. hes one of the 'original kings of comedy'

Well, Americans usually have a different sense of humour to Brits, so that's probably why we haven't heard of him. The only American comedian that I know of, that really makes me laugh, is Joan Collins.
no offense but they are all black comedians, and i have never found black comedians that funny. except for damon waynes on the show "my wife and kids"
the reason is because culturally most of what our comedians talk about is not funny in your culture, imo. i dont really find brit comedians all that funny, especially since i can hardly ever even understand them. eddie izzard is ok though.
I find it funny how Brits could always chat for pages and pages on forums about British comedians, and the rest of us would be wondering what they're talking about.

no. scottish is scottish. irish is irish. then theres british. im not saying youre all like that. im saying most all british comedians ive listened to are harder to understand because of their accents. and you can't disregard this fact if you LIVE over there and are subjected to it more than i and can understand it. thats all.
But then you have people like Jack Dee and Bill Bailey who talk slower.
I do get the difference though. In England we find concentrated, subtle behavioural things funny, like the UK Office. Whereas the US Office is diluted, much more obvious and direct.
Personally I'm not much into US comedy for that exact reason. On the TV shows and standup it's like they paint giant metaphorical arrows at the joke which is usually about some pop cultural thing I don't get.
there is a major difference between scottish irish and british accents. scottish and irish generally being more heavy. we arent talking location. yes scotland and ireland are a part of GB the UK, and therefore british. but that has nothing to do with accents.
its like telling me that different dialects of mandarin and cantonese are simply chinese. thats ignorant.
i have a less skewed perception of the accents over there since i DONT live there and am less subjected to them.

They're also completely different to me. Sometimes I find thick Scottish and S.Irish accents difficult but sometimes its part of the humour (Rab C Nesbit).
To clarify: Ireland and Scotland, along with Wales, Northern Ireland, England and all the surrounding smaller isles. There are many accents, but there is no 'British' accent. However, there are Irish accents, Scottish accents, Welsh accents and English accents. However, these are also split into reginal accents too, such as in England the difference between Geordie's (those from Newcastle, up north) and those from Bristol are very different. This is the same as the difference between Texan accents and New Yorkers.

Not only regions but towns, villages all have their own way of talking. Around here we have a base accent but those from a village a mile up the hill say "bewk" for book. And down the road a kettle is a "keckle". Maybe that's just a northern thing but accents and dialects change every mile.

It's true that Britain has a greater range of accents than the US; this is because the British population is far older, and has had more time to develop different accents in relative isolation from each other (I'm talking hundreds of years, before big population movements). American accents tend to be closer together (but still distinct); there are some misnomers though due to non-English languages (Minnesotan accent, Afro-American speech, Dutch influences).
And Cecil, that "British" youtube example is a bad one, that's a Manc-like accent. "
It's a perfect example of a British accent! Because they're all different. And with my ears I wouldn't say it's a Manc accent, I'd say it was around Blackburn, Accrington, Burnley, somewhere like that.
Dr. James, you are so right! Where are you from? I live in Tenbury Wells, and just a few miles up the road in Ludlow the local scumbags say things like 'boff' instead of beef; 'fit' instead of feet; 'wik-end' instead of weekend, the list goes on.
......and don't get me started about Clee Hillers!

Just to clarify Cecil. 'British' refers to all native people of the British isles. This includes English Scottish and Welsh. So A British accent would be anything from any person from Britain.

Just watched that Big Mac video, and he's really not funny. As Bill Bryson said in a book I just read; "It's not true that all Americans don't have a sense of humour; just very few of them do".
The only time an American standup made me laugh was actually on an episode of Fresh prince of Bel-Air. When Will smith failed terribly at some bar some other guy got on stage and done a pretty good routine.
There are just as many Americans with a sense of humor as Britishers. We just have different senses of humor. Samuel L. Jackson had better not die, and Morgan Freeman'd better not either.

you can argue our sense of humor all you want. we will still find it more funny than you will. drop this cultural bullshit. we'll listen to ours and you listen to yours. no its not true that most amercans dont have a sense of humor, its that most american COMEDIANS dont have one. i've listened to countless american comedians and only found a handful truly humorous to me. and i mean truly roflmao humorous.
Who's the one spouting bull***? I never said we had to listen to the other one's comedians. Saying that most american comedians don't have a sense of humor is just as much bull hockey as saying we don't need air to live. Granted, there are alot of crappy comedians, but that doesn't mean they all are.

I watched a German comedy once and never laughed so hard.
General Australia and Europe > Irish & Scottish (Connolly, Lineham, Moran) > Northern UK (Spikey, older Kay, Woods, Noble) > Southern UK (Bailey, Dee, Armstrong) > US (more the TV shows than standup). IMO.
Well, if we're talking about US comedy TV shows, then I get where you're coming from. Shows like last comic standing are crap. They send the dirty and un-funny comics on. Bananas has some good ones though, and there are some smaller shows without so much publicity that make me laugh. (Thor Ramsey is pretty funny. )
I don't believe American comedy is utterly crap, despite the fact that i love British comedy more (coz i'm English!), but i cannot help but like American comedy shows either. Let us not forget the utterly clever F.R.I.E.N.D.S. show - genius!
