Who is following the events at E3 this year? If you're not, you may not know that the PS3 price has been announced, and it's gonna be a minimum of $500. The decent model will be $600, which is gonna come in at about 400 in the UK. Conversely the Wii is expected to be $199.

I don't know about you, but I'm getting pretty disheartened with this "next generation" malarky. Sony demoed some games at their press conference: I saw 2 racing games, 2 fighting games, 1 boring-looking FPS, and 1 carbon copy of a game already on the PS2 (singstar). That was before I got bored and went to bed. The only semblance of originality was an Eye-toy based card game, but God knows how that's going to work. From what I've seen there is nothing new to look forward to apart from shinier graphics and 60 games which will ship incomplete and require you to purchase upgrades for from silly online shops.

I am actually now looking forward to seeing what the Wii has to offer. Dumb name aside it looks like it has a genuine shot at providing some original entertainment. Graphics may make a game look nice but they sure as hell don't make it fun, and graphics seems to be the focus of the other 2 new consoles. Is anyone else growing weary of the same old regurgitated crap being churned out for PS3 and Xbox 360? Or am I being a whiny old fool?

Well, ofcourse i look forward the most to PS3.
But with the price so high, and that im really curious on what Wii has to offer, im probably going to buy a Wii first of all the three...

Good. glad I wasn't the only one underwhelmed by the Sony media event. If anything it's pushed me towards getting a 360, might pop out and buy one today if there's any good games on it. When's Halo 3 out? Haven't been following the 360 as much as I probably should have

Well it's Nintendos even in about 2 hours. should be a good un, just want to know all about these secrets, price and europe launch date too. Metroid Prime 3 and Mario 128 are just too important.

Anyone read the Time article about the Wii? The reviewer totally fell in love with it. Going on about the controller putting him in the game etc. But the controller housing a mini-speaker sounds excellent. Very excited about this one

I'm really not excited about the same type of games with revamped graphics. I'm more interested in new ways of playing games and so far Wii is the only one that is doing anything about it. It's entirely possible the Wii will steal the show and perhaps even the "Next Gen" competition. The way IGN, G4 and all other big pushers in the industry are talking about it and hyping it, seems to me that Nintendo finally has a chance to reestablish itself.

The sheer ammount of third party developers that are already onboard and excited about the Wii's controller leads me to conclude that it will have quite a chance. If any system I purchase it will be the one that is possibly revolutionary and about 3 times cheaper then the others. Hmm, that only leaves one system.

Sony stole nintendo's motion control idea! Anyway, I agree that both the PS3 and the XBox are way too expensive for an amature gamer like me, I might buy a Wii if it's cheap enough, but i'm still pretty happy with my DS...

Anyway, i'll be following the news very closely from e3.cnet.com and other places.

I read somewhere that the Wii will be as powerful as the original X-Box, and that Nintendo are focussing on innovation rather than sheer power.

Whatever the case the Wii is about new technology, original games, and a cheap price, not power like the XBox360 and the PS3.

No but keep in mind that the "power" of the consoles won't be really evident for a year or two (while developers get used to their platforms). The Rev. is plenty powerful.

I do find it funny that Sony added in that "tilt" feature with their PS3 controllers. It's a sad, sad replacedment for the Rev. controller (I know it's called Wii, but it's still Rev. to me).

I personally can't wait for Bio-Shock; the spiritual successor to System Shock (SS2 rate easily among my top ten favorite games ever).

Even so, I still think the PS3 will sell the most units. Nintendo also didn't invent motion-controllers so you can't really say that Sony stole the idea from them (although it's very likely they did base the controller on the Wii's controller).

I'm not going to buy a Wii, simply because I'm not the kind of gamer who really wants to move around a remote control and stuff (I'm too lazy lol). I'm just an old gamer who prefers the normal controller. I'm going to see the reaction to PS3 and then decide whether or not to buy a PS3 or and Xbox 360. The Xbox 360 is tempting though because of the huge price difference.

I can tell you that I am definately NOT buying a PS3 for a long, long time.

I dropped $300(?) on the PS2 at launch, and then it broke 6 months later. Since that time I've gone through two more PS2's (cheap ones).

I'm not paying sony $600 for a system that I fully expect will break within a year.

I'm not going to pay ANYONE $600 for a gaming system, I could upgrade my PC to awesome status with that money.

-------------------------

I may buy an X360, but it'll take a price drop. I'm definately getting a Rev. though, between the NES, SNES, TG-16, N64, GC, Genesis, and whatever other systems's games come out on it; it'll give me more gameplay for less gamepay. Plus, I like the idea of the freestyle controller (For FPS's mostly).

I have a feeling it's going to go M$, Nintendo, Sony this generation. Sony just fucked themselves with the PS3's price; cause while a large portion of japanese people may be willing to drop that kind of money on it; the rest of the world won't be as quick.

@Flava - You can't tell me that that feature added wasn't a direct answer to the Wii's controller. I know it's been around for a while (Nintendo Gameboy actually: think Kirby's tilt and Tumble). Also, you CAN use a normal controller; not every game is going to use the remote.

Yeh I agree with you Shab - Revolution will probably prove to be a big hit. I have a feeling that it will do exceptionally well compared to the Gamecube anyway. At the end of the day, whether Sony have tilt 'technology' or not - Sony can never say that they'll have NES, SNES, Gameboy, N64 games downloaded and playable on their system. I think that's a big advantage for the Rev anyway

Yeah, the virtual console is 50% of the reason I'm getting it, the gamecube games are another 20% (Robotech, Tales of Symphonia, and the ultimate ghostbusting game, Luigi's Mansion! [This would be freaking sweet on the revo!]), and the final 30% is for the new stuff (Red Steel and Joy of Painting [yes, I said joy of painting, Bob Ross is the man!])

Plus, I won't have to waste half a month's pay to get it.

@Flava - We could smear poo on a stick and it would sell better than the GC did. As long as we didn't call it "Virtual" stick or something.

@Pete - Err, SNES had tons of great games and not a single one was pokemon. Same could be said for genesis. Not for the N64 or TG-16 though (They had some good games, but some games is all these systems ever had.)

Bah! Halo 2 is STILL a generic FPS that tries too hard to be cooler than it is. Halo 3 better do something different.

I'm afraid to watch it as I think my fears of "Just another FPS with prettier GFX" will come true. Not that I dislike FPS's; one of my favorites in fact, there have just been so many FPS that have been much, much better (system shock 2, timesplitters, etc.)

Careful to remember that the PS3 controller (happily replacing the boomerang), while obviously based upon the nintendo idea, in no way comes close to the kind of functionality the revmote offers. Trying to play a game opened up by the revolution with a ps3 controller would be like trying to play paintball with a ping-pong paddle. The PS3 controller merely offers the kind of technology that nintendo offered a good couple years ago with that kirby tilt game on the game boy, whereas the WII would operate in 3d space.
I think its pretty obvious that Sony's move had no or little intention of actually improving game play through control, rather it was designed to pull in the niche of people attracted to the WII via its controller, but too mundane to realize the shortcomings of the boomerange replacement.

I just fear that nintendo will make a whole bunch more kiddy games and not tap into the awesome sorts of genres they could open up with the revmote. Imagine unreal tournament on the WII. Then again, consider that nintendo had ~2 M rated games on the GC that were worth playing

i wont get any of them yet

xbox360= rehash of boring shit games with better graphics
wii=rehash of childish yet entertaining(to somepeople)games
ps3=rehash of good games with much better graphics

even though its more expensive id prefer a ps3,and frankly i believe they are in the box seat no matter what they price is,nintendo is only prolonged by its aging hudling small convention of fanboii's,but i think it should(by should i think it deserves to,but that it wont) do better than xbox360,which has done nothing special at all,but now we can have halo with the latest snotshine rendering JOY(and i bet there will be a new improved(snotshine version) of dead or alive extreme beach vollyball-with a revolutionary and large new list of bikinis IM SOLD!)

the controler thing is interesting, wii will have some novelty there, but not enough for me,shit sony can drop what ever motion control they have aslong as they dont bring back the baterang

Apparently the tilt functionality of the pslol controller was added a week and a half before e3, and added to the demos two or three days in advance.

I don't know, historically the first console of a generation flounders when the others come out. But then again, it's not the usual gunfight with N saying "haha, fuck you, MS and Sony!" and Sony saying "haha, fuck you, consumers!"

I'm thinking about the Wii at present. I'm really liking the whole control scheme and it looks like the most fun. The only thing that would get me to buy a 360 is Halo 3. The new trailer for it was... interesting, but not really all that amazing, I hope they show more soon! As for the PS3, I'm interested in that aswell, the graphics look pretty gorgeous on everything they show and the eyetoy capabilities look interesting.

I'll tell you what, I own a PS2 at the moment, and that was mainly bought for GTA. With Microsoft's lower price, and the announcement of GTA4 for both platforms, the 360 seems like a much more viable alternative all of a sudden. The best bet I think will be to wait and see what happens when all three consoles are out.

pete nailed it right there

i have a gamecube dude, which i only bought for resident evil 4,and thats still the only game i have, ive wanted to explore other titles, but they just arent sold in this country, the gamestores will have whole walls of ps2/xbox/xbox360 and they will have one tiny 3 shelf cabinet no more than a metre wide hiden behind something for preused gamecube games(mainly mario, which i am not interested in)...its stupid

as for gta4,well,i bought the first 2 ps2 ones, but never bothered to finish them, that cuzzybro-gansta one was alright to mess around on but i could never be bothered playing a gta seriously, let alone suffering that crap

oh interesting tid bit, which i thought was really stupid, new zealand news had the new ps3 controller on tonight, and were all googaahing over its amazing new feature as if nothing else existed...which..well,was stupid, they really should seriously not talk about anything they arent following properly...

If Nintendo get the non-gamers then they are certainly in for the biggest sales. Nintendo > MS > Sony.
If they don't get it then MS will probably pick up the numbers. Just seems logical at the moment. 400 for a system that plays games? Nobody seems to mention to price of games too, which will cost more than 360 games on them BluRay discs like. Probably cost about 60.
Nintendo charging the cheapest for consoles and games is only a good thing.

Anywho, I don't know how or why but I've started to want a 360. Thinking I will wait for the new cooler running CPU to come out first though. And Halo 3 will likely be crap- I played Halo 2 .
does seem to be the general tone around the internet that Sony have shot themselves in the foot this time round.

Wrong. Generation six was Dreamcast, PS2, GCN and Xbox in that order.

wii=rehash of childish yet entertaining(to somepeople)games

Right, you obviously haven't seen that there's a new ResEvil coming out for Wii, along with this cool looking game called "Day of Crisis", and then there's Red Steel and Call of Duty 3. Metal Slug and I'm pretty sure there's a Tomb Raider on the way as well. Metroid Prime 3.

From this list of titles, I think it's pretty clear Nintendo isn't going to ignore the more grown up among us this time.

===================
Looking at the Ps3 and the games for it, The only killer app that comes to mind is MGS4. In fact, it's about the only game I really want to play; warhawk looked all right too but not in a "rush ot and buy me" way. I'm sure GTA4 will be fun, but that's over a year and a half off. Oh, yes, there's armored core 4, I love mechs.

The only game I see that interests me on the X360 is ChromeHounds; but that's cause I'm a mech freak. But Bioshock is probably the game that will get me to buy an X360 eventually, just like I broke down and got an XBox for MechAssault 1+2, Dues Ex: Invisible War, and possibly Half Life 2 (Did they make this for the Xbox, or is that an X360?)

I'll get Bioshock, but for PC. If it's as much like SS2 as I hope then I can't imagine playing it on a console.

That's fine, I can't be fucked with Steam as I don't have online at home.

The thought of having to upgrade my computer again is scary; price wise. I'll need a new board (unless I can come across a cheap Barton), a new GFX card (My Geforce4 is showing it's age), and a new chip.

It may actually be cheaper for me to get the X360 than to upgrade at this point, cause now that I think about it, Hitman: Blood Money is also coming out for it, and I really, really want to play that game.

Apparently microsoft's releasing some sort of gamertag type thing where everything you play on Vista, X360, and Windows SmartPhones will be added to your gamer score or something. There was also something about playing games with players on different systems (eg. an XBox 360 user plays with a Vista user).

Microsost also announced Grand Theft Auto 4, which I am still way to young to play.

There's been GTA 3, GTA VC and GTA San-andreas (console-wise, not including GTA, GTA 2, GTA London).
GTA 4 is considered 'next-gen' - as was GTA 3 when the PS2 and Xbox were released. So GTA 4 will be the start of the next-gen GTA, hence the name (as far as I am aware).

This is a signature. Have this one on me.

I haven't heard anything except, "it will make use of the Wii's unique controller". I'd guess it's going to be for shooting/flash lights, etc. A Chainsaw! OMFG give me a chainsaw! Now that would be a cool ass use of the rev controller.

I doubt we'll be seeing PC gamers playing against Xbox 360 players. Sounds like too much hassle for the developers (not to mention forcing users to use Live with Vista) and there's obvious controller disadvantage in FPSs etc.

I'm just as good with a gamepad as I am with a mouse (Blame Timesplitters 2 on frantic speed with lvl 5 bots) in FPS's anyway.

Edit: I should point out that's only when the gamepad sensitivity is configured correctly, I suck some serious ass at the ones where the sensitivity is screwed and unconfigurable (No one lives forever on PS2 for example).

i was actually thinking about the ps3 controller, after seeing on that stupid news post it actually seemed like it would be really good for fps game, can xbox360 take mouse? ofcourse it can,it has to,the Wii controller is a neat idea

anyway, res evil ended up on ps2,after they said they would not develop a resevil like it again for sony,so its only fair to assume they will develop on ps3 eventually aswell, call of duty is ps3 aswell, tomb raider no doubt, and any other worth playing game on xbox will find its way to ps3,oh there is killzone aswell, you know, the one everyone said was impossible and that it was only a cg render, well,im still not convinced but one of the sony chaps has blatently said it was real time

on the gta front, well,im not sure how they will pull this one off.the past titles have been restricted so much, both in graphics and with its shite cartoon animation to keep the heat off the developers, which, lets face it,didnt work, but im looking forward to it,if they make a good movement engine and everything,it will be sweet

and well,ps3,the cost will come down, but i think its reasonable to charge for the technology they have in it,they arent scummy like ms who sold xbox for a loss to try and make up a consumer base,i recall reading sony build factories specifically for manufacturing ps3's,oh and also,ps3=600 (u.s bling right?) which roughtly makes for 1000 nz dollars, which, interestingly enough was the starting price of ps2 here, and they sold like hotcakes

oh and thanks for correcting me raddy, but i dont think the order they came out in affected it,sega just wasnt up to it anymore

Thats right, the "Lightgun" is making a return aswell as a sequel to "Duck Hunt".

I was reading all these "hands-on" previews at IGN and it seems the Wii remote is really taking over, they praised the wii remote with its use in Madden 07 "We can't express enough how much fun the control scheme was".

Then you have Sonic, Super Smash Bros. Brawl(ONLINE!), Metroid Prime 3, Ubisofts "Red Steel", Mario Galaxy, Zelda: TP, Resident Evil (Wii Exclusive) and so so much more and Wii has gained a whole lotta 3rd-party support this time around, From the talk of the Developers, News and Game sites Wii is looking to be the next big thing with a strong lineup of software behind it!

Here's the virtual console controller for Wii:
http://gearmedia.ign.com/gear/image/article/707/707508/e3-2006-hands-on-with-the-wii-virtural-console-controller-20060510065246373.jpg

I have a feeling I'm gonna use it a lot.

What I really like with the Wii is that the virtual console will not just be a platform for playing old classics, but also a platform for small game developers "with more ideas than resources", I think Iwata put it (or it was someone else, but still). That's a really nice philosophy, and it seems promising for us old school gamers. Maybe we'll see some brand new "SNES"-classics come to life.

Being able to play SSB: Brawl online is a good enough reason to buy the Wii for me... and that means I can wait until 2007 to see if the console is a hit.

When it comes to the 360 and PS3, I think PS3 will sell most. They always do, since they will probably, as always, get the most titles (even though many are playable at best). I don't think I'll buy any of them. though... I'll get a computer that outperformes them both soon, anyway. And performance is what PS3 and 360 is all about.

Not much else at E3 this year except for Spore, which sounds totally awsome!

The Wii is aimed to reach people who aren't serious video gamers, like the DS and Brain Age. Nintendo is really the only innovator in the market, they have new technology's at a low price, Sony and Microsoft are just cramming as much power as they can into a little system. I mean, games made with MMF take very little CPU power, but I still have fun with them. Nintendo is 3rd place in the "Console Wars", although I don't know how long that'll last...

For NES, you can just turn the controller over and use the D-pad and the two buttons. And yeah, they'd have to really cram the controller with buttons to have it support the other systems. At least it's cool they have one controller for all virtual console games (I mean, so you don't have to get some N64 controller to be able to play Zelda64 or whatever). Seems like a nice controller, too. Classic style.

Every time I go to E3 I get hounded by booth babes who want to ride my Toblerone. I say "Bitch, please," but they're all, like, "I need your babies!" Sometimes it is hard to be such a straight-up pimp. Sometimes you get chlamydia. But every once in awhile, everything comes together just right and you end up both stylin' *and* profilin'.

I agree. The SNES controller is great. Good, logical placement of just enough buttons. I hate many of the new controllers like the XBox one. It's ergonomic and all, but it's crammed with buttons and they're placed badly.

To be honest, the Type S XBox controller isn't that bad, though those damnedable black and white buttons are still hard to hit (Especially for me with my big hands).

The X360 controllers are damned fine though. I'd buy one for my PC if it didn't require me to use XP.

The funny thing is theres all new consoles coming out, but our old pal the PC comes along and swipes them straight off their "next gen" pedestal. Sweet mother of jesus have you seen the demos for Crysis? Apparently in the game you're armour suit has a power distribution system much like the X-wing series games. You can shoot trees up and they fall down, and you can use them for cover and so does the AI.

I think that the Wii looked like the best new console (despite the embarassing name) mainly because no games on the PS3 or the Xbox 360 have caused me to lift an eyebrow so far, and the Wii has zelda on it .

The PC will always be the best alternative for gaming due to its versatility and its constant advancing. However, of the "next gen" consoles, I personally prefer the Xbox 360, and it will be the only one I will be buying until metroid prime 3 comes out(then I'll have to get the Revolution...er...Wii...). I personally prefer power within games and graphics along with the gameplay, plus I hate sony, and along with the massive amount of games I want to play which are on the Xbox 360, and its superior graphics, its my kind of console. I don't think the Xbox 360 or the PS3 have earned the title of "next gen" however, I think only the Wii has with its unique controller style and setup. You can't call using wireless controllers, the ability to turn on and off the console from the controller, and HD rendered graphics, next generation. All of those things aren't new, or overly advanced features.

The Xbox 360 is a very powerful machine, and I think we have yet to see a game that pushes it to the edge of its limitations. Really, I think microsoft would have done a lot better releasing the X360 at the same time as Halo3, because then that would give everyone the necessary incentive to fork out and buy the damn thing.

My parents never let me have a non-handheld console (unless a PC counts), but they're always begging me to get excercise, so maybe they'll let me get a Wii...

Anyway, from what i've seen the Wii looks way cooler than anything else, I mean who cares about graphics if all the games are either the same or bad? The DS beat the PSP because there are tons of awsome and original games for the DS, and none for the PSP, that's what people really care about.

My predictions:
-The Wii will outsell the 360 and the PS3
-The PS3 will be a flop, causing Blu-Re to die
-The 360 will soon stop selling because everybody who it appeals to will already have it
-Nintendo will finally become king of the gaming market ... again
-Hundreds of new gamers will be "created" because of the Wii, possibly causing more people to klik
