I guess the future of RPGs seem quite bleak. The true ones where you get to think at least, not the mindless FF style or CRPGs. Now that Interplay's down, there's only Troika, inXile, and Bethesda to hope on for commercial games.

I really hope they don't turn Fallout 3 into "Morrowind with guns" though. Damn, I hate Morrowind. Nice epic, but it's far too serious, and the user interface takes far too much of the screen. And I'm not at all fond of the heavy focus on reflexes. However, the Vampire: The Masquerade series did it well.

Klik RPGs aren't really anything to look forward to either. Too many goddamn FF style games. The RPG Maker ones are far, far worse.

Oh well, I guess there's just that game I'm working on to look forward to. And maybe a hope that Fallout 3 isn't being made purely for profit..

ive liked rpgs since ages ago. Er Buck rogers countdown to doomsday on the Megadrive was probably my first taste of an rpg.
anyway i hate morrowind (i got it free with my graphics card) but like the final fantasy series so im looking forward to no 12 which will infact have realtime battles in the style of online rpgs apparently.

I really wish someone would make somethin' like Deus Ex. That's probably the only American RPG I was ever able to get into... that and the old DOS Lord of the Rings game. FF games definitely need to go though. There's nothing "fun" about the Final Fantasy gameplay; the only reason you'd want to play one is for the storylines. We can do better folks... heck I should put my money where my mouth is and make one myself.

There's a few promising RPGs on the horizon...

Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga (PS2) -- Atlus
Suikoden IV (PS2) -- Konami
Tales of Rebirth (PS2) -- Namco
Jade Empire (XBox) -- Bioware
The Ark of Napishtim (PSP) - Konami

Side-note: Deus Ex wasn't an RPG. It was a first-person action game with level ups and NPC interaction... at least that's my opinion, I could be wrong.

I agree with Ben, there needs to be a new Deus Ex-esque game... and let's hope Fallout 3 doesn't suck.

And yeah, Final Fantasy is awful. 80% of the time is spent watching cutscenes and the rest is spend fighting monsters to get strong enough to fight more monsters.

Well if you want to look forward to a klik RPG, I started ChaosKeins2 back up, & its going great, I hope to get it released atleast within the next 4-6 months, the battle engine is alot different & leveling up is being improved alot! Here are a few screenshots.

http://www.sitesled.com/members/cassatagames/ck2ss3.jpg

(Arrows in the battle are temp. so while testing we could change the kein type & test all the moves out, this wont be in the full game though.)

Alot of things are still very temp. so these screenshots arent preview's of the actual final project. The GUI of alot of gameplay window's is subject to alot of change, expecially the battle screen. (There are no offline battle's yet, so those screenshots are from an actual online battle.)

So anyway, yeah, I've gotten alot complements on the game so far, tell me what you think about it.

Probably wouldn't be wise for me to say TSE 4: Oblivion, seeing as most of you don't like Morrowind, I have to say I'd love Morrowind, if I have a long time to play it otherwise it is really bad to play. It requires a lot of dedication something alot of people I know have. But then again I think its the best game in the genre the only "true" RPG (not 3rd person action/adventure).

you know all games can be categorised as Rpgs since you are playing the role of the character.
thats why i think its false to say that games like Morrowind are true rpgs.
Why arent final fanstasy or Zelda role playing?

Well, computer RPGs are typically those descended from pencil & paper RPGs, which differ a lot from other non computer games (because you're not hitting a ball with something). So Zelda and the like are really just action adventure. Zelda 2 sort of blurs the line a bit though.

I'm into simple RPGs like Zelda. Golden Sun 1&2 are less action-oriented, and they are great games. MArio and Luigi is pretty damn cool.

Master or Orion 2 is the best in my opinion, but Dues Ex and Sysem Shock 2 are up there as well. My fav RPG is still Breath of Fire 2, I just wish Capcom would make a new non-sucking Bof game.

Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga is a brilliant blend of RPG/Action i think, beautiful game. same goes for Golden Sun...

but apparently they're dumbed-down RPGs. still to play FF7 and PC RPGs mind you, any good recommendations?

If you guys like the interactive story style of deus ex you might like the Starwars Knights Of The Old Republic series on XBOX. The new one, the revenge of the sith, is really well done. It has realtime and strategic combat as well as an interactive storyline. Now in regards to the FF bashing, why doesn't everyone like the turnbased gameplay? While I prefer slightly more action orientated games like Zelda, Final fantasy style RPG gameplay is very stategic in basis and lends itself incredibly well to all forms of novel size plots. I can think of few games that have stood the test of time as well as Final Fantasy and Arc the Lad have. This is just my opinion, and I can see how some of you might not like the turn based style. Now while I'm on the subject of FF, I will have to half-agree with Muz. While I think creating turn based click RPG's is fine, there ARE far too many poorly made FF clones. Personally I think the genre of RPG should really only be ventured into by very experienced clickers, and even then with an air of caution. I would love to see someone make a great click adventure game in the vein of Zelda though.

I'm not a big fan of the FF series, although they do have some beautiful artwork. I bought FF:CC on GameCube and it sucked really bad, so I sold it.

Shab, I agree that BOF2 is one of the best RPG's ever. The only parts of the whole game that I hate are looking for the golden fly in the Frog Castle (the level is so big, you get attacked so frequently, and the music makes me want to tear my ears off and burn the wounds shut), and fighting those three girls with the middle one that rises up from the ground with a big face growing from underneath her (because it's so stupidly hard at that point in the game when you're still rather weak). Everything else about that game keeps me coming back again and again. Try playing Lufia and then going back to it, and tell me it's not slow paced, though.

RPG's I'm waiting for are:
- Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic 2
- Jade Empire
- The new Zelda (I've seen the drool-worthy trailer)
- The Spirit Engine 2 (a Klik RPG )
- Bard's Tale
- Fallout 3 (if it's got the same spirit, humour, and functionality of the other two)

The Final Fantasy series has had a few total duds. 5, 9, X-2, and Crystal Chronicles all jump to mind. 4, 6, and 7 tho are a few of the best games I've ever played.

Well, I really don't consider X-2 and Crystal Chronicles to be real FF games. They drastically change what makes FF so good. CC was far too gimicky, and X-2 was like a frigging charlie's angels spoof. Now in reference to 5 and 9, I'm not sure I agree with you Kirby. While don't hold them in the highest regard, I still thought they were quite good. Oh and to Rick (AntiMatter Entertainment)-Starwars KOTOR is actually already out and it kicks ass. Go pick it up.

I would love to see a sequel to Skies of Arcadia, sure it had too many random battles but the storyline and characters were great and the world was immersive. The only Western RPGs that I like are Deus Ex 1 and Diablo 2, I played Baldurs Gate for 10 minutes and it bored me to death.

You could call the METROID PRIME games RPGs, they are both frigging awexome. The new zelda is going to kick tail.

The first Zelda game is brilliant, the second one I haven't played, Link to the past is pretty cool but feels too structured, ocarina is great, Majora is clever but less epic, wind waker is really cool...

Shab, I agree about Sten's castle too. Sten's also my least favourite character, which kinda sucks for me because you need him in the last stage to reach over those gaps and he's always got practically no experience for me because I never use him. I probably use him slightly more than the plant guy though, whatever his name was.

"Plant guy calls out to the green!"
"Pissy flowers answer the call!"
"Enemy butchers your gay pansy-arse plant guy!"

The thing with morphing your party members with the Shamans is a brilliant idea, too. Did you ever find the Dragon Shaman? I never could.

Personally, menu-based fighting is one of the biggest reason I dislike RPGs. I know some people love juggling statistics, but I'd rather they took a Zelda-style game and gave it more RPG elements (ie, free roaming gameplay, branching conversations) than be forced to watch characters line up like a cheerleading squad and politely taking turns smacking each other with a sword for "1288 HP".

I never finished the game.
The first time I was in Eva's church, and then my little cousins wiped my game out.
The second time, my SNES died.
Then I got the GBA version, and never got around to playing too much (too busy playing Zelda Link to the Past)

I just played it for like 6 hours this last week on an emulator, but then realized that the emulator tried to save my files to the same directory as the rom (which was on a CD) and gave no options for putting them in another directory. I was slightly pissed to say the least.

Turn based lets you focus more on strategy and tactics, as opposed to the more action-focused real-time games. Personally, I prefer the turn-based gameplay and well-crafted stories of JRPGs over the real-time, open ended, more western RPGS.

FF is the very example of horrible gameplay vs superb storyline. Baldur's Gate 2 also comes close, but it lets you do some more thinking .

I like those RPGs where you actually get to think. I'm kinda sick of the button-mashing ones where all you have to do is learn click faster and more accurately. I'm even more sick of the FF-style ones where all you do is press the same button over and over again till the enemy dies.

Someone who likes RPGs should really make a good, balanced one, without too much talking, nor too much button-mashing. Oh well, guess I could play Vampire: The Masquarade - Bloodlines about 2 or 3 more times before I get sick of it...

Sadly

I have to admit that there was one turn-based RPG I loved and that was Final Fantasy Tactics... but in that game the emphasis was on the battles. What bugs me are the "Strategy-lite" games where it's basically a game of paper rock scissors but with pretty special effects. With many RPGs, the only "strategy" is if you can't beat an enemy, you need to spend a few more hours leveling up and hope he doesn't use his instant kill move.

Heh heh... on a different note, anyone remember Quest for Glory?

LOL. I should quote that, Ben. Though the Fallout series were good turn-based strategy games.

I miss QFG. Not really the best of the bunch, but it was fun from beginning to end. Wish I could get the whole bundle, though.

I wouldn't say Fallout has the best strategy, but instead of beating enemies to get stronger you have to actually go out and find better weapons/armour/friends to fight with, so it's a lot more interesting.
