Small one-click mini-game with highscores. What else..

Basically what you need to do is to create a long chain of earthquakes to throw hotel guests out of their hotel rooms. But because that would be too cruel the final goal is still to save all the people. So you play kind of a double role between "devil" and "angel" in Earthquake Madness! 2.

To play the game all you need is just one click, but it's still a skill game on many fronts. First, the magnitude of the earthquake depends on your ability to hit the epicenter by mouse (requires some reflexes). Second, the timing is really crucial: you need to choose a good time to start the earthquake so that there are many people inside the building, and that most of them have parachutes, wind is not too strong, etc, etc. There's some depth to it even though it's also a lot about pure luck (so don't take it too seriously).

Earthquake Madness! 2 is the sequel to my older game, with improvements in gameplay elements, graphics and highscore system. This version has some performance hits with taller buildings and major earthquakes so don't panic if you manage to get a F/S of under 10, it's actually normal.

Thanks to spitznagl, MacAdaM and AndyUK for helping out with the gfx, great work guys!

I didn't understand what to do other than click on the ground. There wasn't... really... much to keep me interested.

How do you get them parachutes?

I didn't really enjoy it. Even after reading the instuctions I was just aimlessly clicking around and left wondering if I'm supposed to be killing people or saving them.

Posted by MJK 26th February, 2009

Yeah, basically just to click once and hit the epicenter (small red thingy). The trick is that the conditions (stats on the left) change all the time, and you need to find the right time to start the earthquake. The goal is to save as many people as you can.

OH?

I thought it was to kill as many as possible... =D

Well, fun and weird game. Maybe some better instructions!

Entertaining idea, but too much waiting around and too little interaction. Not very clear instructions, either. Seems more to do with luck than skill.

Posted by MJK 26th February, 2009

Ok, I'll try to clarify the instructions a bit to make it clearer. Yes, it's like 50% luck and 50% skill. If you have both, you can throw out+rescue even 5k-10k people.

even so, the player doesn't really do anything.

I got 6k having 100% luck.

Posted by MJK 26th February, 2009

Whoa, 6k! Great result, you are a very lucky person then.

I liked killing them more... Man, that just sounds horrible. lol

Based on the feedback given, I will add this one brief instruction screen which is presented when the user starts the game for the first time.

Save as many people as possible-- HOW? The user doesn't do anything to save the people or give them parachutes. The concept could be taken a lot further.

Posted by MJK 26th February, 2009

He will choose the time for the earthquake. When parachutes availability is high, more people will be saved, and vice versa. Yes, it's very small amount of interaction, and most of the effort from player's side is just observing and finding the right moment to start the earthquake.

While I don't like RPGs, I could manage to enjoy this game since it wont waste 40+ hours of my time like others would.

Great job building the complex stats-board & Random hotel size/texture! Considering what it is, mostly a simulator, I have to say that it's really well done.

...Simulator?

To me, any game in wich you don't directly control movements in real time could be called RPG. I know this is even more simple than any commercialized RPG, but if you don't think it's one, please tell me in what category you'd classify this game.

Stratedgy or arcade, certainly not a Role Playing Game. As for simulator- not really.

Posted by Spitznagl 27th February, 2009
Rated :

Definitly not a stratedgy game, since it just involves luck and timing. As for arcade, I guess you're right. Sorry guys for using the term RPG wrong.

I just wanted to say is that it was fun for a slow-paced game, wich I don't usually enjoy much.

i think you'll all have more fun playing
'Now I am Become Death, the Destroyer of Worlds' !

Posted by MJK 27th February, 2009

Torava is still leading the highscores with amazing 6566 saved people. I bet there has been at least 0.01% of skill in that performance! Who can beat this first will be officially announced the "first legendary EM!2 player"!

Next on the chart are crimsonghost, RedEchidna, lexx - all with scores of over 3000 rescued hotel guests, great job there. You can view the scores in the game or at http://www.mjkgames.com/smf/index.php?page=scoresem2

Last I checked, number 6 on the list after one day!

I will make the same comment as everyone else about it being fairly shallow. But it is hilarious!

Mr_Tom stop getting people to download stuff made by your fake account. It'll only make people hate your game more.

I rather liked this. The online highscore keeps bringing me back.

I think though the player should have some say in the buildings construction. Even if its just placing support girders, optional mass damper etc. Heck even make the items cost points accumulated from the previous 'level'. But I like this

Posted by MJK 2nd March, 2009

Thanks, I actually like that idea a lot. Perhaps I'll do something like that at some point..

I really enjoyed this one, although it took me a little while to figure it out. I have to say though, that this game wouldn't be as fun without the online highscore system.

Oh, the goblets are GOTW awards, just recolored. If your game won a GOTW then you(if Rikus remembers ) get a trophy. Looks like he's about to win his sixth GOTW.

..unfortunately, for everyone else that is.

Posted by MJK 4th March, 2009

Torava is STILL leading the pack with 6566 saved hotel guests, so no one has yet received the award for "the first legendary EM!2 player". 10 players have managed to get over 3000, try to join them..

When you select "highscores" from the menu, and hover your mouse pointer over the scores by the best players, you can actually get a lot of details on how they have managed to save so many people. So that's a good way to get some tips about optimal conditions for creating long chains of earthquakes.
