The Daily Click Recommended Game of the Week Winner

Edited By -Adam- on 11/1/2008

This is a Halloween "game" I've been working on for a couple of weeks now, using the MMF2 HWA beta. The programming is poor in places, but then again I'm not a programmer Originally it had no goal, but towards the end of production I added one to make the game last longer.

As a pumpkin you must roll left or right and jump around over hills to unlock new events. As you unlock certain events, you will in turn unlock one of the four pieces of totem pole in the game. Complete the Totem Pole and technically the game is finished, but there are one or two surprises for afterwards.

-Controls-

Mouse wheel or A+D for left and right.
Left or Right mouse button for jumping.

-Credits-

Myself for Graphics and programming.
Johan Hargne for the main theme and his whistling
Joe Strong for an idea.
Nick Gregory and Liam Reddington for Beta testing.

Hope you like, sorry if it's too cutesy for the more hardcore blood lovers

Nice visuals. Obviously the gameplay was not the major point of this. It's simple, and everything works well. I could see this being expanded on into something with multiple levels and secrets to unlock. Right now it's just a good example of how mmf2 can allow for more than just the 320x240 res pixel art games we're used to.

I really don't know what’s the hype about this. Finally tried it hoping some of the praising will proved to be correct.

Ok, the visuals are excellent and very slick (although not brilliant, innovative or mindblowing), as well as the music. But really, the gameplay is almost nonexistent. I especially disliked the fact I didn't know why a certain totem got unlocked. I mostly run around left and right and kept noticing the changes.

So sad realizing people do go for bells and whistles.

As a flash-like interactive (children) animation it get's 5/5.
As a game I'm sticking to my 2/5. Well, maybe 2.5, but they don't allow half stars here.

"This is a Halloween "game" I've been working on for a couple of weeks now"

Are you capable of reading?

Hey -Adam- this is a nice game! Sure its short, but you HAVE to make a new one, longer, and more to do! This game is great, and if you push it further, add more, it came become even better!

And because it's a Halloween "game" you've been working on for a couple of weeks I need to give it 5/5?

I apply same standards on all indie games. Something some of you will never comprehend.

maybe you should apply different standards to indie games and indie "whatever-the-heck-this-is-because-its-not-really-a-game"'s

You really are looking to pick a fight. Now if I called someone an idiot I would probably get banned.

Some people really should learn to accept a negative critic, without feeling a need to insult the person giving it, which you did twice, with the first not being so harsh (but still, it was one). I'm even more puzzled with this sort of reaction when the remaining feedback you got is almost 100 % positive. This tells a lot about your character.

I try in my comments always to be objective and constructive. If you could check my comments history you would know that. But I doubt you care. My conscience is clear.

Right, so why was that little comment needed?

Why was this marked down for gameplay when it wasn't really meant to have any. That's like marking down Tacos for not having any pepperonis in them.

No, it's like marking down a shiny, but plastic burger because it's got no food in it.

Posted by Ricky 8th November, 2008

But if you buy that burger at the toy store, you should expect that. This isn't a game, so it shouldn't be graded like one.

"So sad realizing people do go for bells and whistles."

Being condescending like that is hardly objective and I saw nothing constructive in your comments.

Not that they weren't true, but there is an overwhelming number of people who claim to give good comments and call everyone else turds for having even a minute problem with their assessment. And then they go off on people for not accepting their opinion, instead of letting it slide and being the more mature person. You're really showing the usefulness of your entire set of comments.

Food for thought.

Sorry 'bout that guys. It was something that was bugging me and I had to say it, even though Mister Dazdarian is not really one of the bad offenders...

@-Adam- I'll again praise this game; I entirely stick to my original post. This 'game' is supremely fantastic and it simply has an amazing charm about it. All of my compliments still apply.

However, with that said, you need to accept criticism and understand that people's opinions differ. Not everyone will like everything that you've made. If they did, the world would be a boring place. Lachie Dazdarian said nothing of unacceptable standards in his/her original post.

My big question is why this is 23 megabytes. I wish I could download it, but my download connection seems to freeze whenever I do something.

Maybe I just need a download manager

Posted by Ski 9th November, 2008

Thanks Toadsanime, but I think you'll find I'm perfectly capable of accepting criticism. The point is he rated it as a game, when I did clearly point out that it wasn't really much of a game.

"My big question is why this is 23 megabytes."

A lot of large graphics, sounds etc.

But this IS a game - look at the main menu, it says so. The fact is there is little gameplay to it, everyone appears to agree with this, even -Adam-. To some the amount of gameplay is important to a rating, to others it is not. If they say it is important and score the game on the basis of this importance then really you must accept any positive or negative feedback, or even criticism.

I value gameplay over everything and stated that it is underneath no more than a 3 star game, yet it charmed me into giving it 4 stars. I think i was balanced, however this is just my opinion and i would never expect everyone to share this.

Didn't someone once write an article called "8/10? Why do you hate my game?"...

Lets be fair, if I was grading this as a game, I'd give it 2/5 or maybe 1/5. But obviously this isn't a "game" so much as interactive graphics. And that is something adam did particularly well, mind you.

Sure, people could be nicer when they dislike a game, but what keeps the flame war alive is that everyone gets super pissed when someone gives a low vote for a game that allmost everyone like.

If a game has a 3.5 average, and someone gives it 1 star, no one would care. Obviously it was a game that wasn't so good. But if a game has a 4.8 average, and someone gives it 2 stars, everyone goes nuts since they think the game is perfect, and no one could possibly dislike it!

This game got me really bored really quickly, which after a while made me stop playing. The character was moving way to slow, and even if it's not a "game" (which it obviously is, only a different kind of game) you should have more things to interact with. Everything you did now was roll slowly forward and wait for the next funny little monster to pop up and look at you.

I give you three stars since the graphics are quite "stylish" and the music is really good. But this is obviously a game that some people love and some hate.

oh all my comments were deleted too. I wonder if my rating was deleted too? Nope.

I think ratings should represent everything about the game, from presentation to music. It's like the comments should be a mini review actually.

If it was based just on fun then nobody would know where they went wrong because it's entirely possible to have no fun with a really good game.

If i based my rating for THIS on fun i wouldn't have given it 3 stars.

Wrong. This is like tacos that isn't supposed to have anything in them. Should you say "it was good for a taco shell" and vote five stars? I like tacos with stuff in, so i don't vote this empty shell high, even if it was supposed to be empty.

Maybe it was soft taco shells?
They are paticular tasty shells.

To me this game felt like a disney ride. In most disney rides you slowly follow a track as you watch audio animatronics do stuff. You should make a pirates of the Caribbean "game" like this Adam.

This game looks and sounds really nice. Refreshing to hear modern high quality sound effects in a click game for once. its very solid and well put together. However because it has no gameplay its quite boring really and not really any fun, just pretty.

Ok, so game/notgame debate aside, I really liked the art style of this program. Major Kudos. I actually thought it was going to be a little like LocoRoco before I played it. Now, while I know you said this isn't a game and that's fine, I really think you should make one. The world seems like it would be a fun place to explore, and the weird and unique characters would be really fun to interact with. You seem to have a very vivid imagination and I would personally say you should definitely put it to good use in a sweet new game, even if it's just a simple goofy platformer like the aforementioned LocoRoco I think the world would fit perfectly into the genre. Again, nice program, and I loved the art.

Recently re-playing this as I've been moving my indie game files from my PC to my laptop and checking them all over, still a very charming 'game' and deserves praise alone for that. I enjoyed 'playing' it if not just for the feel of it. I suppose everyone has their own way of rating things though so that's fine.

The music's great, would be lovely if it were up for download somewhere.
