In July 2008 I met up with some other game developers in Skövde, shared our experiences about game creation, and competed in a music and a game creation competition.

This is my entry for the game competition. We had 28 hours to create something, and we were assigned random themes which had to be used. My themes were "Legos, Eating and Mirror". How I used the first two in the game is obvious, and the third one is a hint to how to actually play the game.

Avoid The Evil Space Eel is a space game that would have been a shoot 'em up if you actually had something to shoot. Now you just try to avoid an evil space eel. Music is an important part of the game, and you have to play the drums correctly to repel the eel. The game requires you to be musical, you must be able to remember a rhythm (which involves telling the drum sounds apart from the rest of the music) and then play what you just heard back in sync with the music. To some, this is very easy task (I've heard about people scoring over 2500 points on the second attempt in the Hard mode), while others are not able to figure out how to get a single point. Some people have recommended me to add a visual indication of when the drum sounds occurs, and when to play them, but I didn't want to do that. The challenge is after all listening.

Haha, you just HAD to upload this here, too?
The game idea is really good, and I enjoyed it the first time I played it. I wont dl it here now, but I think this deserves 4/5 stars very well.

Haha, well, I wouldn't consider myself to be tone deaf. But I found it really hard to figure out which sounds were supposed to to be the second type of beat.

An extensive tutorial, and this is a winner. As it is now it's just a very mysterious application (though beautiful), which might turn out to be a good game if the player experiment a lot with it. At first, I didn't even realize that the ship was steared with the mouse.

Också skriver jag "bra spel" på svenska, bara för att vara patriotisk.

ok its a good concept, but it absolutely needs some kind of introduction/how-to-play level, what you have right now is completely undeciperable. Its one thing to have clear controls, but you need to tell people what they are doing with them.

Believe me, I would have created a tutorial if I had more than 28 hours to create the game. As it's a game for the "no more sweden" competition I want it to stay as close to the original as possible, and to be honest I'm spending all time I can to work on my large and important projects now, I can't sacrifice that time to improve my just-for-fun projects like this Eel game. Don't have too high expectations when it comes to those please, they are not like "real" games that I have to make make sense for most people, I'm more than happy even if only a handful of people understands it.

Haha, this was a fantastic game! I'm playing it in a noisy area which makes it impossible to win, but it's still crazy fun!
