Review: Comet Ball

I'll start by saying this- This game is a LOT better than my first game was! Comet Ball is a Break-Thru game where you bounce your ball around trying to break all of the bricks in an area while collecting powerups. It's this author's first release on the site, and I must say that I'm very impressed!

Gameplay is pretty solid, and I was able to jump right in without any problems. There are several different powerups to collect, although their functions aren't always obvious. In fact, I don't know what any of them do except for the one that gives you an extra ball(more on that later). The game still suffers from the usual problem with games like this... you'll spend half of each level breaking bricks with ease, then the next half trying to get that one last brick over in the corner. :P I wish there had been a "blow up the last brick" powerup.

Graphics were well done. The style was clean and colorful, and the backgrounds were a great way of keeping the game feeling open and not boxed in. I can still only give it a 7 because it's still basically boxes and balls. :P

I'm not sure what the music is from, but it adds a lot of energy to the game. The sounds helped keep the action going.

Lastability will completely depend on how much you like this kind of game. Some people love Break-thru games, and this would be a great addition. I played for several levels and enjoyed it very much. It's especially fun when you get the "multi-ball" powerups which can quickly get out of control. I went from 1 ball to 20 balls in just under 3 seconds, I kid you not. However, more powerups would have helped keep the action going. Most powerups don't seem to do anything, and it would have been fun if each powerup had the impact that the multi-ball powerup had. I spent most of my time bouncing one lonely ball trying to get the last lonely brick.

Overall, I think this is a great start to this authors submissions at the DC. Technical aspects aside, there is a lot of natural skill and artistic style in this game that will really help future games get better and better. Well done.
