Review: The "Block" Demo

Doesn't sound that exciting, does it? "Block"... Still, don't get the wrong idea, it's worth a download. It's certainly got a unique main character.

The game uses a good platform engine, with capabilities for jumping, running, using lifts and even bullet-time effects.

The demo contains only a tutorial... but despite its name it sometimes doesn't really explain things very well. I'm still unsure how I'm meant to use bullet-time to cross the wide gaps in the play area - I managed to get over them by holding down the Run button and "double-jumping", although I don't know if this was intentional or not.

It might seem obvious now I say it, but you have to press Enter to skip the "typing" effect of the tutorial text. I wasn't aware that this could be done until the third time through, when I'd already sat for half a minute waiting to try to get past the "pounder" trap again.

The shooting section at the end was a lot of fun - especially with Bullet-Time on. The "motion blur" effect while you're in Bullet-Time is impressive, as is the screen shake when you fire your weapon.

Overall, this looks like it could be a good game - some work needs to be done on explaining the mechanics of the game in the tutorial, though.
