A break
Posted 19th Nov 07, by Dr. James MD
I'm coming clean - I don't like the graphics in this game. I'm taking a week or 2 off to focus on some freelance graphic projects for other folk and to get some new ideas. Hopefully come back with ideas on how to improve the graphics. I think I'm at a stage where I can do painted graphics better than pixel ones, but redoing the whole game with painted graphics would just take oh-so long. So I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place like.

Might have been that Paul McCartney chap who said he could always play guitar better after he stopped playing for a week. Lets see if the same works for game design!

But some proper update stuff-

+I've added the first vehicle to the game. I dunno how many I should add, I originally didn't plan on adding them at all.

+I'm up to 130 rooms now. Took a while to get from 120 since I added a boss and spent a looong time optimising code and all that jazz.
Almost finished Chapter 2.

+Added a medal system, inwhich the player is rewarded for going beyond the call of duty on certain tasks. They're also given out for finding secrets. There are 32 in total and serve as a progress benchmark since it's very non-linear.

+All the online bits have been finalised.

I plan on getting a 4th trailer out for Xmas still. This one won't be a 15 minute rush job either!

Like you said to me, a little break and a re-think is always a good idea. You don't want to release a game which isn't what you wanted. Good luck!

Yeah I agree the best thing you can do for yourself is to take breaks from making your game from time to time. It's the best way to not become constantly stressed and burnt out over it. You'll look at it fresh in a few weeks

lol I didn't know you could post comments on projects

I've jumped back onboard now. Updating all the player sprites to something consistent. Some actives had black outlines, some had none. I've got a new system and I'm applying it to everything. It's taking a while but it looks worlds better.

Odd thing is I felt really excited about working on it again! Like I'd been on holiday and couldn't wait to get back to my own bed... if that makes any sense!

Yep, you really need to be in the right frame of mind when making a big game as you already know. It makes a world of difference. Nothing is better than having actual fun making your game, and nothing is worse than having to work on it when you'd rather be doing anything else.

Hopefully people posting on these new projects will spur developers on a bit. I think we need all the support we can get!

Well Paul McCartneys little idea can be applied to games. I've had such a productive couple of days! Made a couple of new tracks, planning out upcoming areas. It's going really well.

Even added a little system (might remove it in the full game) that records and sends the details of a players death to me so I can tweak that area! It's a level designers best friend.
