Demo and 3d-engine
News posted 23rd June, 2008 by Rikus
Alrighty, lets try out 2 columns see how that turns out, flava is experimenting with this also so we can smooth it out a bit.?
New Demo: Famous Fighters
Comments Vertigo: I am still working on this game non-stop, but I wanted to know what you people (the experts) think of it thus far. The special attacks and jumping still havent been programmed.
New Demo: 3D-Example
Comments Werbad: Well.....It appears that I was wrong regarding the 3D possibilities of MMF2. I experimented a little with HWA's support for shaders and came up with a perspective shader allowing me to create a somewhat working "3D" engine. It requires shader v2.0 to work properly.?

3D! Awesome!

Oooh.. animated GIF

Posted by XeEmO 23rd June, 2008

the 3D demo is almost like looking at an early 3d dos game for the first time. really showing new possibilities.

i think that just opened up heavens gate. where is the source to this?!

Posted by alastair john jack 24th June, 2008

I think the text "New Demo: Famous Fighters" could go above the image IMO.

Posted by Muz 24th June, 2008

Lol, heavens gate the movie?

Posted by alastair john jack 24th June, 2008

@ Allen, yeah MMF2 is almost catching upto DOS!

the 3d engine is super smooth!! fantastic work werbad

Posted by Werbad 24th June, 2008

That Engine is a little bit outdated and has some issues. The new version is open source and can be found here:

You should get clubby to program a spellchecker in the news posts too

Posted by Cecilectomy 24th June, 2008

well i didnt want to say hells gate cause that sounds bad (also a movie) and i didnt want to say pandoras box cause that also sounds bad.

so heavens gate! yes! lol.

thanks for the open source!

i guess i dont have HWA cause i get an editor runtime error when i run the second frame with the 3d engine on it.

Posted by Jonathan Lake 24th June, 2008

I get the runtime error as well, =[ .

oh hey just a thought on the new news post layout. i think the biggest problem i have is with the pictres being different sizes. it makes it look lopsided and unprofessional. if you dont want to mess with pic resizing make the text 'box wrap' around the pics and make it like a newspaper column.

I'm checking out the 3d engine now... just want to point out I have the last word on all the sub-forums right now! Is there an award for that? Has anybody else done it yet? << That's a personal question to everyone, not a, "HAWHAW! LOOK WHAT I DID!" question.

Posted by Fish20 24th June, 2008

My graphics card doesn't support pixel shader 2.0. Or maybe the engines wrong. Hmmmm.....?

Posted by Werbad 25th June, 2008

If you can run the .exe but not the .mfa, make sure that you have HWA installed and that you have properly installed the included shader. It should go in your Effects folder.

The 3d is neat reminds me of old Doom games, however the Mouse control is a bit touchy :F and the nights because the static objects allways look in a certain direction rotate in circles as you walk. Maybe set it up so their direction is static and when you move their animation changes for a faux 3d effect to them aswell.

I found that while googling randomly, thought some people might like the reading.

It's a bit late for that kind of 3D engine. You'd have to bust your hump to make something as good as Wolfenstein, which is what, 15 years old?

Posted by Pixelthief 25th June, 2008

yeah but its a learning exercise that anyone who plans on serious computer game programming should look into.

Posted by DaVince 25th June, 2008

"well i didnt want to say hells gate cause that sounds bad"

hells gate? heavens gate? How about Hell's Gate and Heaven's Gate to prevent people from thinking there are multiple heavens and hells?

Posted by Fish20 25th June, 2008

I have HWA but I didin't have the shaders installed right. Thanks.

Posted by Cecilectomy 25th June, 2008

here comes davince the grammar police!

also, pixel thief. thats a good tut. its one of the ones i read while learning about ray-casting awhile back.

Posted by Pixelthief 25th June, 2008

yeah I remember studying the code of some MMF raycaster like 8 years ago, is when I really started getting interested in the more technical parts of the game design. KNP never managed to be good enough to pull off 2.5d, tho

The Admins really must be busy or not care. O_o Back in the day TDC used to get more than one news post a DAY! Or at least, it appeared to.

maybe there's nothing to post about

It seems to have different seasons, where there is much activity then another season where there is extrememly minimal activity.

Blame the exams

Posted by Disthron 29th June, 2008

Hmmm..... it looks interesting and seemes to work really well however I'm not shore how ustfull it will be.

To the person who maid this, would it be posdible to make a map editor for something like this or would it need to be hard coded for every level?

I don't mean to rain on any one's peraid but I just remember that there was a big thing about the Mode7 extension but I can't remember any one using it for a full game.

Posted by OMC 29th June, 2008

Hey, yea, what happened to that mode 7 extension? I wanted to make some Super Mario Kart-esque racing games.

Posted by Werbad 29th June, 2008

Obviously it doesn't have to be hard coded since it is just math... I'm currently working on an new shader that will allow me to make floors/ceilings and rotate the camera in all angles.

Posted by Cecilectomy 29th June, 2008

it would be simple to make a map editor. just load data from an array file and set the map pieces. then run the engine.

Posted by Airflow 29th June, 2008

You taught me of HWA. Thank you Werbad. ^^

Posted by Disthron 30th June, 2008

To OldManClayton:- The mode7 extension still seems to work in MMF2. I haven't played around with it for a while but it's still there in the extension list.

But back on topic, what I meant about it being hard coded is that you'd still have to wright your own 3D engine right?

I mean, it's really awesome of you guys to develop these extensions for us for free but I'm just afraid that, like the Mode7 thing, your going to do all this work and no one is going to use it.

Posted by Cecilectomy 1st July, 2008

im going to use it!

Posted by Fish20 2nd July, 2008

Moo! Im going to use it to try to get automatic camera scrolling.

Posted by Fish20 2nd July, 2008

Mode 7 Mainly a graphical extension and you can't really make games with it.

If werbad made an extension for this type of thing I would use it for a long time.

Mode 7 is very difficult to ad objects into. they dont work well anyways. This is the reason its really never used.
