I am still working on this game non-stop, but I wanted to know what you people (the experts) think of it thus far. The special attacks and jumping still havent been programmed. Player 2 also has only 4 characters (that takes a lot of time to program.) Anyway I would love it if you grab a brother or friend and test it out, because it is a multiplayer game. (Single player will be programmed after the engine is finished.)

NOTE: multiplayer only! and the screenshot is an early mock-up, didnt have time to make new ones.

UPDATE: I have added all the characters for player 2, made walking up and down possible, added another attack, added attack effects and speeded up the players

EDIT: this now links to the final game, so its not a demo anymore. voices and special attacks are added.

Umm, this thing is very slow on my computer, and it was too early to put it on here. Please don't listen to what people say about the graphics, because i think pixel art is an efficient and flattering way to go.

It looks interesting, but I agree it's a bit too early to put this up. There's nothing really there to play with. I also think it's too slow, gameplay wise.

I disagree about the graphics, I don't think they look lazy they are 'stylized' but perhaps the bodies could differ slightly from character to character?

Posted by Cecilectomy 24th June, 2008

does not compare to dual toys. waaay to slow for an action or fighting game.

i didnt have any difficulty telling who they were. the only thing id suggest is the bodies. color doesnt matter. its called style.

I think he might be using one body so the animations are easier.

I agree with everyone else, too early and too slow.

Posted by Tropik 24th June, 2008

Char. Anim. is to slowly!

Posted by Vertigo 24th June, 2008

hmm ok thanks you guys! I have speeded up the characters and made it possible to walk up and down like a beat-em-up. I will also change the bodies a bit more but I cant change the legs or arms due to animation, like ben said.

Posted by Vertigo 24th June, 2008

I tried to look at the original character and ask myself, what really stands out on his/her body. Thats why most of the characters have standard bodies, but all animals have tails, Nightmare has a sword, The snipers have snipers, the turtle has swords and samus has big shoulders...

I really like the char-graphics and the idea of the game. But so far, the fighting sucks.

I'm sure you can make this into a good game.

Posted by Vertigo 24th June, 2008

I have also added another punch attack and attack effects now. The second player can now choose all characters. Special attacks are still an issue tho :S

Posted by Vertigo 24th June, 2008

I have updated the download with all the new features mentioned in my posts.

Posted by Ski 24th June, 2008

Well, even if you're just using one body, it needs a totally different posture. He needs to lean slightly, heavy breathing- a basic fighting game character pose...

Posted by Zezard 24th June, 2008

I don't really like the style... The combination of having very specific characters and make them very unspecific isn't super cool in my opinion. That doesn't mean that it can't become a good game though.
If I wanted inspiration for this kind of game, I would look at some Neo Geo fighting games.
I'd say that the Projects session would be bettering suited for this kind of demostration.

I like the character selection in the screenshot. A good list of famous characters!

Even after the update its too slow.

Posted by Vertigo 25th June, 2008

Ok I will give them as much of their original suits as possible I see what you mean now, I begin to think the characters are more important than the style. Thanks dudes

Hey Vertigo, you're doing well at taking some harsh comments. That's cool of you, and it's going to really make your games better in the long run.

I re-downloaded the new version of this game to see what the 2P controls were like.

Something I neglected to mention before was that I really like the style of this game, but where it gets let down is not in the same bodies thing but that the attacks have no force behind them. The arms just swing out as opposed to them flying out fast and in a straight line and coming back in slower etc.

This has a good amount of potential if you get the attacks and animations sorted out. I hope we see this develop!

Time to inform you on the progress again! I added more details to the outfits so the characters are even more recognizable (I am still limited to the head, chest and shoulders tho). I started casting voice actors a week ago so all of the characters at least SOUND very much like themselves. Well anyway, I tweeked the fighting system a little bit, but I cant fix those forceless punches because I cant shift the players' weight.

Voice actors? Cool, that will add a lot of personality.

Posted by Velovix 26th June, 2008

Ok, the game was improved, but the game still lacks the action and mild violence that you want in a fighter. Also, I forgot to mention that despite that fact that your using low bit sprites, make the animations a little better plz.

Yeah I'd much prefer less frames and more force, he doesn't have to shift weight just throw the punch harder etc.

Also make the general body stance more leaning forward? Make them look READY FOR ACTION!

Voice acting in indie games = win.

Posted by Vertigo 27th June, 2008

haha yeah the voices are sounding really cool, I still need them to do doom, bomberman, master chief, hellboy and boba fett and then ill send in a new demo. I will try to redo the punches

You know, this might have been better as a 1-player beat 'em up, like in the vein of Streets of Rage or Final Fight. The engine and fighting moves seem more along those lines. Maybe for a sequel?

Then again the game isn't even finished yet, so it might be premature to make that kind of judgment.

Posted by Vertigo 28th June, 2008

As soon as I completely finish this, I might think about FF2 as a co-op beat-em-up great idea! And I might try to make a 1P mode in FF1 but it will be really f**king hard

Posted by Vertigo 28th June, 2008

haha thats so true.

I've tried several times to make FF work for me, but have had no success. I've made sure to turn on compatibility mode, put the DLL file on my Desktop (where i'm running FF), and switched around a few more variables on the compatibility tab, but still no success.

"Error when attempting to open file" is the message I receive, and the game doesn't open. I'm running WindowsXP with all the recent OS updates.

Any suggestions? Is anyone else encountering this problem?

Posted by Vertigo 28th June, 2008

You are the first one (at least who told me) with this problem. I am also running Windows XP... does someone else know how to fix this?

Posted by Zoglu 29th June, 2008

Try to download it again.

Posted by s-m-r 29th June, 2008

Ah, I needed to also extract the .gam file along with it (I thought it was a Game Maker file or something). My bad; human error on my part...!

Posted by Vertigo 30th June, 2008

Haha no I am still using TGF so it is needed when I complete this game I will run it through MMF2 so you wont need it anymore

AI isn't that complex really. Just put in a bit of movement and some randomness and away you go!

Trying to install the game, but the website refused to load, because it couldn't respond.

Any suggestions on how will the link work again?
