Read the following:

http://www.adequacy.org/public/stories/2001.12.2.42056.2147.html

and be glad that you're not as stupid as everyone who writes stuff on that website. (Don't bother about the comments, it's just like Slashdot - 10 pages of exactly the same stuff. )

OMG, Lunix will take over the world!

I don't think its a very good article, it only shows how to tell someone is a computer enthusiast, a newbie one at that, and it forgets girls can be hackers and crackers too.

I'll debunk this obvious joke post line by line:

1. Has your son asked you to change ISPs?
----If you wanna move from AOL your a hacker? Odd. I don't see how AOL has anti-hacker things, they give people free proxies! Also, it just shows you don't like AOL or prefer another ISP.

2. Are you finding programs on your computer that you don't remember installing?
----Thats how to show they are a newbie, now a hacker or a cracker.

3. Has your child asked for new hardware?
----Shows they are an enthusiast, and you don't need a better graphics card to be a hacker.... What, do they think everyone hacks using a 3D GUI Jurrasic Park style? Anyway, AMD are better than Intel in price, and Intel aren't 100% American Made anyway.

4. Does your child read hacking manuals?
----Wouldn't a true evil cracker dude just download one?

5. How much time does your child spend using the computer each day?
----Again, shows they are an enthusiast!

6. Does your son use Quake?
----Quake? At least UT, come on! Anyway, if you can get your stress out in computer games you have less time for "hacking" and have lost your violence, right?

7. Is your son becoming argumentative and surly in his social behaviour?
----That just shows they are a bratty computer addict, right?

8. Is your son obsessed with "Lunix"?
----If they talk about Lunix they are most likely a newb.

9. Has your son radically changed his appearance?
----Thats called getting older, it happens for most people - and what are they talking about? "Hackers" don't all dress the same!

10. Is your son struggling academically?
----People good at computers are either 1) good at computers because they are not good at other things, so this makes them good at something, or 2) because they are generally smart and good at school.

11. "Son"
----Why is it only males that can be Crackers mis-labelled as Hackers?

RE: "[Linux/Lunix can] break into people's stereos to steal their music"
I think the author has a problem with makign the distinction between computers and reality!

Strange article. I find it funny that 1/2 the article is made up of a bunch of links that mostly don't work. Now, why would that guy post a link to a spanking web site(the guy probably goes there every day)? He also put a link to the ASD or whatever processor it was web site. Anyone can just click there to buy a processor.

Hehehe, very funny. Had me thinking "this guy doesn't know what they're talking about" up until they said Flash was hacking software, then I got it

"AMD is a third-world based company who make inferior, "knock-off" copies of American processor chips ... and they deliberately disable the security features that American processor makers, such as Intel, use to prevent hacking."
Hahahaha!

if you've got a spare minute (or 60, like i) read the rest of the articles on that site. a particularly funny one is "beating children saves lives": http://www.adequacy.org/public/stories/2001.7.20.193824.148.html. amazing how many idiots take it seriously.

If your son is failing courses in school, or performing poorly on sports teams, he may be involved in a hacking group, such as the infamous "Otaku" hacker association. Excessive time spent on the computer, communicating with his fellow hackers may cause temporary damage to the eyes and brain, from the electromagnetic radiation. This will cause his marks to slip dramatically, particularly in difficult subjects such as Math, and Chemistry.

I am horrified by this article. I have wanted to attent the anual ANIME festival in japan kown as the Otaku Convention. various type of 2d and 3d art works are available to see and sometimes buy here.

Tigs, your sig has indeed put it perfectly.. the problem is that some idiot is going to read this, get drunk and beat their kid with a monitor.

This is a well writen pile of dog $hi7. an mp3 program... c'mon you have got to be kidding me. I would like to see this author burn in the fires of hell for such a missleading document. True that most of us know better, But some do not.

"it's allfun and game until someone looses an eye" or get beat with a 19 monitor!

Later,
Keeper
