I look at download.com and guess what I find in the games section. GAMES! Not just any games... commercial ones! What happened to the days when you could find high quality freeware games off it? Has this world become so commercialized that you can't even find high quality freeware games off Download.com (my old main source for good freeware). Those were such good times, finding Quibble Race, Wanderer of Absu, Arena, Titans of Steel, Exile, all those other good little games that allowed their creators to become incredibly famous later on (cept maybe Wanderer of Absu, though it was good for a KNP game).

Point is, it's become commercialized! There were plenty of good games back then, but these days it's just full of patches, maps, and other crap for wealthy commercial games.

And what of the game supporters like Home of the Underdogs and GameHippo? They overdo things. Have you seen some of the reviews they give indie games? It's as if they're being paid/beaten to give uber-high reviews to all the indie games they come across.

Really... I'm sick of all this silent warring between the game industry and indie developers. I JUST WANT SOME FUN GAMES!!! Is that too much to ask? I'm sick of all the crap on the shelves imitating the best-sellers. I'm even sicker of all the ass-kissing those game reviewers do just to get back at the crappy game industry. What is with all the politics?

Click Community games seem to be pretty much the same thing too. It's just platformers, top-view shooters, arcade remakes, those little games with people floating around and shooting, and even more arcade games.

If there was even HALF as many quality games out there before the Click Community existed, I'd probably be playing a good new original game every month. But nooo... even with all the wading through crap I do at the DC, I haven't seen too many games that have interested me for long, besides maybe Legend of Baldric or The Line Continues (which wasn't too fun after I realised that I could use the soundtrack without playing the game).

Oh well, at least this inspires me to get back to work on Trap Designer or Combatant. Or maybe I'll try to download every piece I can off HOTU.

Define 'side on'. I just MAY get to work on that again someday, seeing that I now have MMF 1.5, less buggy qualifiers, and the platform object thing. But then again, I dislike sports games and the only reason I wrote that was to win the DC XMas contest, just to get MMF 1.5. Ironic, ain't it?

But sure, I'll be a tester. Do I get my name in the credits?

I think you should be looking at gamehippo.com instead of download.com :/
Gamehippo's just as bad as HOTU. They're very heavily biased onto independent games and that's about all they have. They often give almost full marks for something I'd rate as just 7 or 8/10 by TDC standards.

Finally, i was waiting for Download.com to eliminate all those crap games people managed to get in.
Dude, I've seen some really, really good games on Download.com a few years back. ADOM, Gladiator, that Arena game thing, Antiquity, Titans of Steel, Conquest of Elysium, all those little games that I've loved and got me into gaming. There were occasional crap, but those usually got flamed to death after a while .

join the commercial age!! I have so you should.
Ick, I already have. I'm making little children's game for a local university. Employers say that children like bright colors, so they want me to make everything bright... background, foreground. I'm getting a headache looking at my own stuff. No kidding.

Since research and game sales show that teenagers like sex and violence, perhaps a game filled with nude, bloody prostitutes would get sales like crazy?

EDIT: I shudder to think that my some kid may just have gotten inspiration from my previous comment and end up making a game more controversial than GTA some time in the future.

LOL!! I can imagine little kids playing a game like that! You know someone's gonna make a game like that, now that you mentioned it. Besides, i happen to be a teen. Have you seen http://www.addictinggames.com ? Half the games are crap, the other half is awesome! Also, try playing the demo for Insaniquarium. That game is freaking good!

There are still original non-commercial games out there, they're just hard to find these days... my gosh, you are right, there is a Hentai (Japanese anime porn) game that my pervert friend is addicted to. You must get a close relationship and score with a girl you just met within 150 days. It is a LOT like what you described at the end of your post, and pretty much mocks the entire concept of stereotypical love... I hate games like that, me being a steriotypical head-over-heels-in-love kinda guy... not that I am ever successful in having someone to love...

Darn, I'm depressed now... the post ends here... -er, actually, now

GTA3 is boring. I tried to find excitement in the missions, but they're just like wandering around with a destination. If you don't play a mission, you WILL be bored. And I think HOTU and Gamehippo are just trying to seperate from the nitpicking, flaming nature of game reviewers in this day and age. Want to play a good freeware game? Check Hippo or HOTU. Want to find a good commercial game? Look at some reviews on GameFAQs. That's what I do, and it works (mostly). And most professional reviewers are whiny kids who have been around graphics longer than gameplay. They complained about the graphics in Encounters in Space. You could see the panel lines on the MS! What more could you want? And the reviewers at Gamespot make fun of the Dreamcast since it's a dead system. Well I say, I still have one, and the games on there still rock, so they should lay off. Who agrees with me?

Oh! My god.

Yeah, Dreamcast is awesome. Street Fighter III: Third Strike is the best multiplayer fighting game I've ever played.
And GTA3 is quite fun in my opinion, even if you don't do any missions. It's frighteningly fun to run over things or beat people up in that game.

My favorite games are still Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Zelda 64 & Majora, and recently Battlefield 1942 & Vietnam.

There are still good games being made, but there are alot of crappy ones. But people have been making crappy games since forever, it's just that we only remember the really good ones.

Damn, have any of you guys seen any of the games I mentioned? All of them are superb pieces of work that I'd buy if they were still on sale (cept maybe Gladiator, fun game, but I could make better). Even today I think that Conquest of Elysium is one of the best games ever made... and it's not even on HOTU. Damn creators sold out and made that dull Dominions game for their dull publisher.

http://upload.com.com/3910-21-5.html?path=/?tag=dl.footer

From the Download.com game submission page:
Welcome to Upload.com. Submitting your free or trial software product through Upload.com gets you listed in CNET Networks' download library, which delivers 2.5 million downloads per day. The basic processing fee is $79 to list your product in Download.com, ZDNet Downloads, and MSN Downloads. Register here.

I think that explains why there's so much commerial crap on Download.com. I mean: Who the f**k that makes freeware games pays over $79 only to get the game on Download.com?

my fave game of all time are Mario 64, Mario Bros 3, Mario World, Zelda 64, various Sonic games and of course Turrican.

recently my faves are stuff like Halo and Vice City (but i hate the first GTA3) but they dont compare remotely to the classics. meh the old days were mad and funny i cant put my finger on it but new games lack something. too much focus on quality methinks.

but things like this have been heard a million times before
