Okay let me first introduce box modeling!
Ill be doing a scorpion robotic insect type thingi in max

first i will create simple box
http://sky-line.sytes.net/creeper/1.jpg

Then i will select faces and extrude, bevel, extrude, bevel until im to tired to do it anymore.
http://sky-line.sytes.net/creeper/2.jpg

Now ill start smoothing some edges to simulate plates, and texturize the bastard.
http://sky-line.sytes.net/creeper/3.jpg

Now ill add IK animationability to it and add background and effects to simulate the plasma cannon.
http://sky-line.sytes.net/creeper/4.jpg

this took 33 minutes from inserting the box, to making the final render
If i was to use Vertex modeling it would take me maybe around 3-4 hours, and also surround my model
with bad connection, bad overlaps, etc.

although the leap between 1 and 2 does seem a fairly big one.

Nice one. I think this was generated from the 'i can 3d model anything!' thread. Where the poster made a 'man' out of ellipses.

Anyway nice. What program do you use? I made my first model using vertex modelling and I can tell you I ain't doing it again.

Very nice Tina. I'm trying to get the hang of box modeling, but with little success so far... you wouldn't happen to know of any good tutorials floating around on the web would you?

Cool!

That's the nice thing about box modelling, you can do it in almost any 3d software there is!

I can apply those tutorials, for example, in Cinema4D XL because it has the same basic features.

Box modelling is what I use all the time, although I can't profess to be incredible at it; I'll have some practice today...

Personally I like it when Tina models her box.

Oh come on, like I was leaving that alone!

Show me the power child,
I'd like to say,
That I'm down on my knees today,
Gives me the butterflies,
Gives me away,
'Til I'm up on my feet again,
I'm feeling outshined.

I usually use patches or NURBS, cos if you put enough time in you get some sweet results.
