No, it's nothing to do with Matrix Revolutions, I'm afraid.

Recently I've been working on a DDR-type game (you know, the kind of thing with the dance mats where you have to bounce around like a complete fool following the arrows. It's rather fun) and I thought I'd post up this little engine test on my Angelfire account. You know the procedure, copy and paste the link or you won't be able to get at it.

www.angelfire.com/alt/wong/wcbddr.zip

While that's downloading I'll tell you a bit about it... I've seen quite a few dance games on TDC, but none that were actually hard-programmed - that is, they used random arrows rather than a preset sequence. Thanks to my new-found fascination with INI files and customisability, the "steps" are kept in an INI file provided.

(Ignore the "Albion-Med" bit of the INI, that was just an experiment to see if I could work out how to program steps for a MOD whose patterns weren't all the same length. I can't.)

Also, because the system is based on MODs and the DMC2 object, this one keeps in time with the beat (an arrow is created when the MOD reaches a certain row, and the arrows are scrolled up the screen at the same time as the MOD "scrolls" through the song.

The graphics/interface are rather thrown together at the moment, though it does keep a count of your current combo, max combo (the counter at the top) and the quality of your stepping - there are four levels of that, from top to bottom on the screen.

A rather major control issue: If you press both arrows at once when two arrows appear at the same time on a row, the game won't recognise it - you have to press each arrow very quickly one after the other. I'll work on fixing this.

Something that I forgot to mention (as if this post wasn't long enough already) is how score is calculated: 100+(current combo level) for Perfect, 80+(current combo level) for Good, 10 points for OK and none for You're Rubbish, Get Off.

It's not protected, it's just a GAM file, so anyone can nick the idea if they want. The MOD used is an edited-down one by me. Think that's everything... oh, and it's rather tricky as well.

Anyway, I'm going home for Reading Week (which is University-speak for "Go Home, Get Your Laundry Done And Get Drunk Week"), so be good while I'm gone. <¦-)

Wow! I didn't need to paste the address into the address bar! Do the arrows create when the notes come, because you should press the arrows when the song comes

Since there's no penalty for pressing a key when you don't need to, I could just jam on the keys and get 1000 pretty easily. Nice one

The arrows are created one pattern in advance, so that the arrow should be pressed when the song reaches the correct point. (It took me a while to get my head round it myself).

I don't have DMC2.gox

-Above post is ancient and probably irrelevant-

An old account of mine, recently cleared out. It's a blast to the past, the age was marked as 14 when I found it. If you know where to look, you can track me. Au revoir.

I've promised on the DDRFreak.com boards that I'd make them a DDR screensaver. I doubt I'll make it playable, but does anyone know how I might be able to synch random steps to the beat? I haven't used DMC2 yet, or any other audio extensions, so I don't know if you can test different sound channels. Otherwise it's just going to be totally random, which I suppose isn't really a big deal.

You'd have to sample the sound a second or two later (depending on how much time you want to give they player) - but with the current extensions available you have to play the same MP3 file, but X seconds later and muted. That way you can sample that track, and after X seconds you'll reach the same point in the file that the player hears.

If it gives you a DMC2.cox error you need to download bass.dll - www.un4seen.com
