So, ShadowCaster... did you at least see my suggestion on making a GOTM instead of a GOTW on that other thread before those fools made you lock down the thread? I think it's still at http://www.create-games.com/forum_post.asp?id=44534

A GOTM would be cooler than a GOTW. And is it just me, or does this week just have two nominees (including the removed one)?

I did see that, but generally everyone votes within a couple of days, so it would get a bit boring having to wait an entire month until the next poll. Usually I'm pretty good with updating, it's just when I have a lot of stuff on it may take an extra week

Well, my friend, the slow updates isn't the only prob with the GOTW thing. There's also the whole deal about every game on the list being crap at times, where a crap game would win the GOTW, though another much better game won't get in just coz it had some real competition.

Or in some rare cases, there are two VERY good games on that list, but the players have to choose one, leaving the other with not even a consolation prize.

* Muz recalls the days when he had to choose between One Step From Reality and that other well-made snow throwing game that wasn't too advertised. Muz also recalls the one between Worm Wars and Red Feud.

I would rather there be a Game of the Month, an award more prestigious than GOTW, and wait the extra few weeks.

That would be extra effort for SC.

I've got to agree on the GOTM award idea. For starters, there's always a varied level of cometition, and whether your game does well or not seems to depend more on when it's submitted than how good it is. If yu look back over some of the old winners, some of those games are pretty lousy, and definitely worse than many games which haven't won anything. What's worse, I usually don't have time to check out all the nominees every week, and I don't like to vote when I haven't done that, because it doesn't give everyone a chance. With less awards, the nominees could be picked more selectively, and then I wouldn't have to worry about trying out so many crap games just to develop an informed opinion. Also, the GOTW award doesn't seem to be announced on a weekly basis with any consistency anyway. Sometimes it's a week, sometimes it's two, so one award a month could be less work to do, and it could be announced on a set day every month and we would all know when to celebrate.
Then, at the end of the year, you have all 12 winners compete for Game of the Year, which would actually be something to be proud of, rather than saying, "Oh, yeah, my game won GOTW #57, right between 'Sonic's Colonoscopy' and 'Mario's Ripped Graphics Extravaganza.'"

That's a great idea, because then, instead of people crying to other users who give their bad games bad reviews and blaming them for ruining their chances is the GOTW competition, people could just cry to the administrators until they got their way. Then, anyone who wanted an award would just have to whine enough until they got one, and the whole thing would be even more meaningless than it is now.
Maybe these folks should just invent their own awards and award them to themselves, and blab all day to anyone who'll listen about all the great awards their lousy games have gotten.

I think GOTM instead of GOTW would be cool...

Yeah, sorry about that. I don't know what my prolem was that day that I felt the need to dig all that up again.

Anyway, I guess KA's going to go with GOTM so there isn't much point in switching DC's long-standing celebration of luck and timing.

Hmm... this would be a cool poll.

"Would you prefer a GOTM with 3 awards instead of the old GOTW with only one award?"
- No, I'm happy with GOTW.
- No, we should stick to tradition
- No, it would take too long
- Yes, we need a new change
- Yes, the GOTW was unfair
- We should have an editor's choice instead
- I don't care

How about the standard game of the week, except for that last week in the month, where that would be the GOTM. And have the GOTM not only include the GOTW winners, but also the runners up. I think this would be a good system as some games do not get popular until after they have already been included in the GOTW.

I'd like to point out that that was my only post on this whole subject.

If you were to have GoTM there should be a way to change your votes...
in case a better game presents itself...

Um... wouldn't a GoTM be the collected 'best games of the month'? There wouldn't be any better games presenting themselves till the next month.

Yeah, I know, GoTMs are a bit slow in this case, but they're easier to handle and MUCH fairer. C'mon Mike...
