so ive never really played playstation one.

once we left 2d (after the SNES) i stopped caring about video games (i would still play the old games) and missed a lot of consoles and games.
now i am sure there are probably a bunch of pretty lovely / good play station one games.

so which games are good / fun / do you suggest checking out?

There's a bunch of good 2D games for the PS. Amongst my favorite ones are; Castlevania: Symphony of The Night, Abe's Oddysee, Abe's Exoddus, Rayman and the Mega Man X games.

Croc is absolute garbage by any objective measure. I found it embarrassingly derivative and dated even at the time (and this isn't a nostalgia thread!)

I loved the original Rayman to death. And to this date, there's one game that I will still jump in and play on PS1, and that's Medievil 1.

Great, fun gameplay and hypnotic, beautiful music.

So you'd rather we revived the dead topic? (No sarcasm or offense)

I personally would rather have a new post about a topic we discussed two years ago, than a new reply in a 2 year old topic, and read the responses as though they were recent... until I hit either an old member that's long since left, or worse... a post from myself, confused. Then realize that I was reading something 2 years old.

I don't know about you though, which is why I'm asking.

Silent Hill - one of the scariest games (atmosphere wise) i have ever played. That radio freaked me out.
Metal Gear Solid - simply fantastic
Gran Turismo - set the standard for racing games in my opinion and the Hi-Def mode was simply gorgeous at the time

Oh dear MasterM. You've created a list thread.

There are loads, absolutely loads of great games on the psone. It was so well supported for such a long time. The only trouble with it i guess is that a lot of the games now have various superior sequels on other newer generation formats.

There was a very good conversion of Quake 2 which is worth checking out. Dunno why the general consensus is that Goldeneye on the N64 is amazing but Quake 2 on the psone is shit. Because thats not true. The raw polygon pushing power of the Psone makes Quake 2 a smoother game.

Here's an interesting little tidbit for you. The last game released for the Psone was Fifa 2004. I'd say it's probably not worth grabbing that one if you ever decide to buy a Psone though.

Yeah I remember enjoying Soul blade a lot when my freidn rented a copy (wasn't there a Soul edge too). But again it's one of those games that's been superseded by superior sequels.

Soul Blade was the american and european name for Soul Edge IIRC. Or maybe it was the other way around.

Legend of Mana is something different, and very cool.

I played Digimon World 1 and 3 and can remember enjoying them. 1 was really cool and rather engrossing with a pretty big and entertaing open world. I remember 3 was a traditional style RPG, and it was pretty cool too.

Megaman 8 is really good.

I never got to play the Megaman X games for PS1, but I'm sure I would enjoy them because I loved X1,2, & 3 for SNES.

Also, if you enjoy more generic style racing games, I remember Dukes of Hazard for PS1 being pretty fun, but my memory may be lieng to me

Legend of Mana is a great game. The story is pretty lacking though and the ending is probably one of the worst ever. I beat the game and got to level 99 in one sitting so it isn't a super long game, but it will keep you occupied. Not to mention it is beautiful and the music is beyond catchy and epic.

Megaman X PS1 games are also really good . . . particularly x4. X5 was pretty good and X6 changed the formula and revved up the difficulty a LOT . . . it kind of felt less like a Megaman X game than the rest =/. You should definitely play them when you get the chance. . . especially x4.

Spyro was fantastic before the PS2 version. One of my favorite series of games, absolute joy. Loved the graphics, loved the music, very fun gameplay. Just an all around very good game. The first Spyro game on PS2 wouldn't have been as hard for me to enjoy if it wasn't for the unbearable long loading screens though.

The theme park game was also neat, but unfortunately I got into Rollercoaster Tycoon on the PC before I played the theme park game on PS1, so I found it difficult to appreciate as much as someone who played it first.

I always loved the original Driver on the PS1, I can remember going to buy it.

"Loose the tail man!" Loved making car chase "movies" in the Director. Shame reflections have not made a decent Driver since (on that note is San Francisco any good?)

Other notable memories : Vigilante 8, and multiplayer on the original Medal Of Honour.

I skipped out on the PSX/N64 generation (reason: 3d accelerator and mechwarrior 2)

PSX Games I've come to like
Parasite Eve 1
Castlevania SOTN

The Megaman games are alright, I'd suggest the Legends series over the X or Classic 8. In the case of the X series they added a horrible depth effect to the platforms, which made judging jumps very difficult (They finally got it right in the Zero series). Megaman 8 is very meh, design wise the game was a mess, it's was a mashup of classic megaman with megaman X, which didn't work well.

I didn't like Legend of Mana, which is the game I actually broke down and bought a PSOne for. Breath of Fire games are alright, but not spectacular.

SF got mixed reviews I think? If you're talking about the recent game, I believe a lot of people didn't quite like the "shift" feature where you can go into other cars.

Another PS1 game I liked was Mr Domino.

Off the top of my head, some good PS1 games are:
- Crash Bandicoot 1-3 (it got better with each sequel, 3 is a must in my opinion)
- Metal Gear Solid
- Little Big Adventure (I urge you to play this one, also personally I think this version is better than the PC version)
- Final Fantasy VII (VIII is supposed to be good as well, but I never played it)
- Oddworld
- Jumping Flash 2 (I think 1 is pretty much the same, but I never played it)
- Theme Hospital
- Rayman 2 (one of my favorite 3D platformers)

There are probably more games that I can't remember right now, but those few are amazing games in my opinion and should keep you busy for a while.

Metal Gear Solid, Silent Hill and Resident Evil 2 were my favourite games of that era.

Resident Evil 2 remains my favourite RE game, even ahead of RE4, only just though. The atmosphere, the story, the (at the time) graphics and animation were brilliant, just a breath of fresh air for horror fans. I remember the first time playing the demo, the music, visuals and everything just gave me chills.

The first Silent Hill game is also probably the better in the series and it's a shame it seems to have been ignored by compilations, remakes and updates etc. It was quite technically advanced for the time, surpassing RE's pre-rendered static backdrops with a dynamic 3D camera. The melee combat was quite a new thing in survival horror too.

The first Metal Gear Solid was remade very decently for the Gamecube with a nice graphical overhaul using the MGS2 engine and, of course, if you've got a Wii and Gamecube controller can still be played on the current generation.

Also, there's Mortal Kombat Trilogy if you're an MK fan. Probably the best version of 2D Mortal Kombat, unfortunately had a few glaring bugs but on the whole it was a comprehensive compilation. On the subject of fighting games, Tekken 3 was pretty much the perfect fighting game and probably the best looking game on the PS1. The later Tekken games have added new things and diluted the formula but Tekken 3 was, in my opinion, the peak of the series.

There are probably more games that I can't remember right now, but those few are amazing games in my opinion and should keep you busy for a while.

Personally I do recommend you get the PC or PS2 version instead. The PS1 version was one of the poorer versions that missed some stuff and had lower graphics detail.

Reason was that after the 3 on PS1 the Spyro games the series switched developers from Insomniac. First to Equinox Digital Entertainment and Check Six Studios for Enter the Dragonfly, then Eurocom for A Hero's Tail and finally Krome Studios for the Legend of Spyro trilogy.

I've heard that Enter the Dragonfly on the GameCube is more finished than the PS2 version, although I haven't played it myself so I can't confirm it.

Oh I forgot to include Final Fantasy Tactics. I've always enjoyed when RPGs have tooken a slightly different approach then the classic battle system, ex. Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. I realize there have been tactics style games in the past, ex. Shining Force, but FFTactics does it so well. It was 3d and isometric! Sure it could use some improvements, but it struck me as a really fun game regardless. And I enjoyed the story too!

I hear a lot of talk on how good Final Fantasy 7 was...but to be honest, in fear of causing fanboy rage, it just wasn't my cup of tea. I didn't enjoy the story. Even with its high unbalanced set of characters, 6 still strikes me as a better game

What kind of stuff? I played an hour or two of the PC version and got to fight the final boss, and I noticed the strategy required there is different, but I don't recall anything else.

The PS1 version misses some levels, changes others, adds some dialogue and a character or two, and changes some of the narrative. The PS2 version (quoted from Wikipedia) "features some enhancements including new levels, some level revisions, a few new music tracks, three new bosses, Lum redistribution and an enhanced cameo from the first Rayman game's mosquito mini-boss, Bzzit (the son of the villainous Moskito)."

The PC version is available on gog.com
