Just been searching eBay for old games i used to love on the PC - my god how i miss the '90's! Remember the big boxes you used to buy PC games in, how cool were they? They really made you feel like you'd bought something, something big and cool. Then there were the manuals that were the size of dictionaries - you don't get stuff like that anymore!

Games i've been hunting down are;
Return to Zork - had this with our family's very first PC, an Olivetti 486-DX with 16Mb RAM (i think!) and something like 160Mb HDD
The Need For Speed - i remember looking at this in PC GAMER and thinking "wow!"
Terminator: Aftershock
Indycar Racing
Grand Prix
The 7th Guest
The 11th Hour
TIE Fighter

...those were the days!

Grand Prix !

I love F1, and for me no game racing game (or simulator) can beat GP2.
I still play GP4 occasionally since I can't run gp2 on win7.

I loved GP2 and GP3, still yet to play GP4 but it looks a much improved beast! Have you downloaded the current season cars/tracks for GP4?

Oy, I miss the 90's too, man. Maybe I wasn't a big gamer back then, but still, looking at the games made back then is really nostalgic; a breath of fresh air, even if I was too young remember seeing a whole lot of them in stores... *shrugs*

Don't forget Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Alone in the dark, or Heart of Darkness. Those were some pretty nostalgia inducing games!

Wing Commander, Carmageddon, X-Com, Secret of Monkey Island, and too many others to list...

My family had a Viglen Genie 286. It had a "Turbo" button on the front that you could press, and it would crank the speed right up to a blistering 12MHz

Very true about the manuals - TFX had a huge manual that had loads of information about the aircraft and weapons, and even the physics formulas used in the game engine itself. Even KnP had a really good manual, whereas now with MMF you just get a .pdf on the cd

My cop of MMF came with a nice thick printed manual.

Only pc game I can really remember buying back then was in '99, when I got Sonic R and Sonic 3D Blast for PC.

I think games have lost a lot in playability terms. Some games look so pretty now but are akin to watching grey paint dry to play, either that or they are far too easy!

I used to have lots of EPIC Megagames titles (as it was back then - Solar Winds springs to mind), Doom, Doom II, Heretic, High Octane, Prince Of Persia, Lemmings, Roller Coaster Tycoon, Theme Hospital, Theme Park, Wolfenstein, and some game I can not remember and would love to know - you had a little spaceship and you went into a underground area full of obstacles (like guns). You had to pick up this device (on tow) and get it into the air before it exploded. It was very fun

Lots more but thats all I can think of for now . I miss the 90s too (apart from the god awful music, take that and spice girls was all the rage when I was at school. Thank god for my dads LP collection!)

This might not be it, but it sounds like Solar Jetman for the NES:

I'm all for nostalgia but the big boxes and thick manuals were often to try to cover up a lack of actual value for money.
I feel all warm and stuff inside when talking about games i played on my Amstrad cpc but sometimes you would pay £15 for a big boxed game that fits inside 64 kilobytes. Sounds like a rip off when put like that...

btw i recently bought a copy of wiz 'n' liz for the megadrive

Andy: I have played Wiz N Liz

You must remember prices are relative to what was good at the time. Best games in 1990 got high end 1990 prices, even if the games are tiny in code space size. Plus writing even 64k in machine code is something to respect

@-eviscerator-: Cheers thats a very similar game but not the one I am thinking of. It was on PC and had what I thought at the time was amazing SVGA graphics.

The 90s was also my favourite era. DOS was the best gaming platform of all time. All my games are a rip-off of Doom, Duke 3D and Blood.

Return to Zork is also abandonware: http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/403

The 90s also had raunchy, hilarious comedy games, such as this: http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/124

Way more funny than any comedy movie, I think.

For other I like, just see my profile: http://www.abandonia.com/user/13344

There were also multi load games in those days, but you would pay the same price. In those cases you would get more for your money.
A good example on my trusty Amstrad would be the conversion of lemmings where every single level was loaded separately, you would never fit that game into ram at once. The total game was over 300kb or something. Yet something like Crystal kingdom dizzy was also released full price in a box with a poster and some stickers but the game was squeezed into 64kb.

To be honest I did buy a big box game with just the disk inside once and I'm not totally satisfied with not having the manual. It's pretty damn rare though so I had little choice.

Gah, I miss those old DOS games too. Aside from K&P, most of my time was spent playing Lucasarts adventures, watching demoscene stuff and making Doom maps. Remember needing to make a boot disk for some games just to free up enough memory for them to run? I'm quite glad we don't need to do that anymore

I don't miss the 90's at all, but I do miss the early 80's when computers weren't ruling everyday life. So little demands, kids playing outside, everything so uncomplicated.

Oh no, I didn't even there was a patch/mod for that.
I've been playing with the default cars, but I've waiting for a 1994 season mod that has been in the works for almost 5 years, but I lost all hope all hope now.

GP4 is a great game though, surprisingly very similar to GP3 but even better in some aspects, the graphics in particular were fantastic in 2002 and still look good today. You should definitely try it !

Ouch @ Hayo. I do not get on with most UK girls my age. They all seem attention craving, self obsessed and facebook obsessed... I guess its the same in the Netherlands.

I miss the 90s too - and the late 80s. I miss the days of the PC not being involved in our everyday lives (Work, Leisure and communications). Also miss not having a mobile phone.

I now have had 2 big box PC games delivered to me through the post from eBay. Both i used to own back in the '90's; Star Trek The Next Generation "A Final Unity" (which i never got very far in, back in the day) and Indycar Racing (though this is the white label version and i wanted the original, like i had). The great thing about both is that they come complete with great condition boxes and all the internal stuff, including the ginormous manuals!

Wooo hoooo!

If only my PC would play them.....
