In the image editor, double-click on the transparent color box (the grey & white chequered one) - then choose a new transparent color instead of black.

I tend to just fill with black then paste. It does then job.

Another idea is simply not use 'true black' at all. There are a few very dark colors that appear to look black but really aren't. If you use one of them, you won't have any problems.
