Would anybody be up to participating in a ludum dare/experimental gameplay type competition/event for the Daily Click? I just thought of it the other day and didn't think it'd fly. So, would any of you participate/be interested in such an event thingy?

I like the idea but I wouldn't be able to find the time to keep making games.

Well, for ludum dare, the idea is to make an entire game from scratch(or use engine code) including all assets, music, sound, etc, within a 48 hour period. A list of themes are suggested, voted on, voted on again to narrow it down, voted on a third time for the final theme. Then people need to build a game that at least matches that theme. LD17's theme was islands, so everyone had to make an island themed game. Games are then submitted for judging with source and are then "judged"(critiqued mostly) by everyone who participated.

In the case of experimental gameplay, the theme is pre chosen. For ie, this month was repitition/repeated gameplay. Participants have to make a game withing roughly seven-ish days and then submit it. The submitted games are posted on the site at the end of the month. In both cases, the game must be completely made by one person.

@omc: In a nutshell, that is the reason why Ludum Dare exists. (according to the keynote speech anyways). This is that time that you specifically set aside to making a game. Since, you already know in advance when it's going to be, just put everything else on the backburner and tinker with a game for a few hours.

@marko: Does that help?

I like this idea The most fun competitions I've entered have been those based around a theme. I'd try to make time to enter it.

I also like the idea of people working on all of the assets in the game, as many people seem to lack confidence in their graphics or music abilities. Perhaps it could be combined with Assault Andy's idea of teams for one of the competitions, but I do prefer the idea of working on each game alone.

Yes I would. I missed entering the Ludum Dare #17, originally supposed to be my first because I wasn't good enough at XNA.

@scott s: Most of them generally are, I think. That's what the miniludum dare is and that's what last weeks was. So, weekends would be a definite time to set aside.

I think, that when the new site poll comes up, it should be about this question. That way, we get a good amount of people saying that they would participate. Now, if we can just nudge one of the admins in that direction...

Or I could start one this month with an admin backing up as well. That'd be cool.
