Anyone here planning on downloading the beta of Chrome OS when it is released this week?? Granted there won't be much in the way of drivers for it but i'm gonna stick it on a Virtual PC and see what it's like. Apparently they are holding an "event" for it today at some point.

I'm going to hold off for a bit. Thing about Google is they have great ideas, just a poor execution and poor design. I'll wait until everythings sorted out with it.

for those of you with a slight interest in the OS there is a live webcast at 18:00 GMT (10:00 PT) which you can see here:

As far as I know the OS isn't going into beta this week - they've just released the source code. Plus it pretty much only works on solid state hard drives and with certain Wifi cards (or in other words, it works best on netbooks). It's at a very early stage at the moment.

Does Chrome OS turn completely useless when you lose your internet connection? Could someone clear this up maybe?

If anyone wants to try it out then there is a Virtual Machine Disk available for download with a working copy of Chrome installed on it.

http://gdgt.com/google/chrome-os/download/

you will need to register to download it. I am downloading now so will let you all know what it is like later on.

UPDATE:
I have downloaded it and set it up and it boots but i am unable to login. a few people on the internet have reported the same issue. it just needs the settings tinkering with in order to get it to work.

That article is a month old? The Chrome OS source was released a few days ago. It's possible that lembi2001's post is actually real. I don't know though.

Netbooks, eh? Maybe when my dad is asleep I'll sneak onto his netbook and replace his Linux with Google Chrome OS. I think he'd like that, especially since it won't log in.

Finally got it to login (turns out it doesn't like proxies!!) seems to run ok. not really tried it properly but we'll see. P.S use virtual box instead of VMware Player.

you need to have a google account to use it mind!!!

My dad doesn't have a Google account, so I guess I won't do it. Actually, it's okay because for some reason my dad doesn't like systems that don't boot. I don't know why...
