Hey guys. So yeah, for the first time in years I'm going to ask for something other then computer parts for Christmas. I'm asking for a cellphone. Yeah, I'm one of the few people my age without one. Here's the problem though. I can tell you the In's and Out's of a Windows desktop, and almost anything you need to know about the hardware, but I am ashamed to admit that I know absolutely nothing about cellphones!

I've been asking around to all my friends, and I thought it might be a good idea to ask here as well, for some combined knowledge. I'm looking for a reliable, low price service, and it must have Unlimited messaging for both Text and AIM (I have friends who don't use MSN).

I've been looking at Verizon, especially since I believe my dad gets a discount for them. The biggest problem here though, is my lack of sense in value with cellphones. I know if a videocard is $600 then it's too much, or if a games monthly fee is $20, that's too much, but I have no clue what to expect with a cellphone. I don't know what's too expensive, and what's too cheap.

iPhone for mini-computerness or Nokia N96 for having everything ever (cept having to pay for GPS) in something ikkle.
But they're very high-end phones. Both phones are an upgrade from my current Nokia 3310, can't fault that! Cept it does nothing.

Verizon is a good phone to go with, They have unlimited text messaging
and it's no extra cost for AIM if you have the "Unlimited" plan.

AIM just will just count as sending or receiving text messages.
Verizon isn't the cheapest phone out there, but it's good and reliable.
(from what I heard) I only have a Tracfone, (A pay-by-the-minutes type)and they're OK,
but they don't have the unlimited texting and AIM.

Well, I've heard good things about the iPhone, but of course it IS apple's... I don't have a cell phone and don't particularly want one and therefore don't have any wanted features, so my advice would be, just go with whatever free one Verizon will give you when you sign on to their network. You can call other Verizon phones free, which is VERY handy. Although, I'm sure it won't have AIM support... But just TALK to them, for goodness sake. The purpose of texting when you could use words escapes me. Believe me, you don't need all those little extra features and gadgets in your phone. They just suck your time away. Use it as a cell phone and leave the computery stuff at home or on a laptop.

But what the heck do I know?

Yeah, the iPhone is REALLY cool, but it's expensive.
I don't normally use the texting becuase it takes me about
ten minutes to type "Hi, how are you doing?"

Particularly I want one, but I really don't NEED one. Why should I be talking to or texting to someone when I have better things to do? I'd only use it in an emergency if I got one tho.

If you're looking for a high-end device, at the moment the best quality/feature-price -ratio is definitely for the N95 8Gb. The price is falling and it's a great phone, also for gaming, in case you're interested in that.

I don't believe you , there are so many times when I'm out and about and would like access to my email.

There are countless times when it's not easy to transport a laptop. When I'm out hiking I don't want to carry a GPS device, an MP3 player and a phone/email device especially when I could just carry 1 device that could do everything I need. Except camera. Even the best and most expensive phone cameras are now only getting to the quality of an old, cheap digital camera.
Plus being able to access the BBC's iPlayer when on the bus must be an excellent time killer

I used to buy phones for gimmicks, but nowadays I just want a phone to be a phone. If I want to take pictures I'll take a digital camera with me, they're not that big to carry around and take much better images. Same goes for gaming, if I want to play games some place else I'll just take my DS.

That's my point. :| You don't need those things. Sure, they're nice, but you get sucked into them instead of talking to people or enjoying the view ON YOUR HIKE. What I meant was, "Believe me, you don't need to be dependent on all those little extra features and gadgets in your phone. If you don't start using them, you won't ever need them. They just suck your time away and other people around you don't like having attention stolen by them." My point was kind of on a different subject. >_O Forget I said anything.

Thanks guys, great advice. Yeah, basically the only real reason I'm looking for a phone is because I'm tired of hanging around the computer to talk to people online. Not to mention if a camera and even web access are included, then I'm not going to turn them down. I'd welcome them with open arms actually, heh. Thanks again though.

Uh, you're kind of recommended to carry either a map and have map and compass knowledge or carry a GPS device when out hiking . Best thing about having a phone and/or handheld GPS is that you don't have to carry around more stuff.
And I do use email! You can't get away from that. And it's something I need to keep in touch with people I'm doing work for, for keeping in touch with publishers etc. Of course I need email

I can see the point you're trying to make but in this day and age, now that I'm out of uni and into full time work I need to keep in touch. It's a rather limited view you have there.

Oh gosh, I wonder how many times "That's a limited view you have" has been said. And how many times "In this day and age" has been said. I have no intention of arguing with you though, it's completely fine if you want all that in your cell phone!

Fair do's!
All I need in a phone is a phone, email, GPS and MP3/video playback. Anything else is just a cherry on top! And anything is an improvement on my current phone but it's got low SAR output so at least it doesn't cook my insides

Don't get me wrong, I'd take a cell phone with all sorts of cool gadgets if someone gave it to me. But I'd probably use them more than the cell phone feature! I just wouldn't fret over getting a particular phone if I needed the phone because I needed a phone.

Aren't all these features the very reason why things like the Blackberry and Helio don't consider themselves "phones", but more or less multi-capable devices which just happen to have a phone.

Helio is really a phone. It's just a phone. Phone. That is what it does. The blackberry, iPhone, windows mobile, etc. are more than phones. Helio is just an ego-phone.

It's funny, but not entirely surprising, that cellphone providers actually have plans for their phones, that don't actually include any voice plan.

Because phones don't have to be phones, just devices that access their voice or data networks. Tis the future and that. I'm hoping that because of the iPhones success and their tariff that other phone networks start to add unlimited data for free. Should be standard in this day and age
