Last night while I was lying in bed it occurred to me that I don't think I've seen a one dimensional game on this site. That is probably for obvious reasons (How fun can it be?) but that got me thinking that it makes it even more ripe for us to have fun with. How fun can we make a one dimensional game?

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, it to make a one dimensional game. That means the only movement is from left to right OR top to down. There cannot be both. Sounds like a pain, no?

Any suggestions or further definitions of one dimensional gameplay would be helpful. I think we could all have some fun with a little exercise like this, you wouldn't be limited by coding or graphics necessarily so the playing field would be fairly level I think. Anyway, what do you guys think?

I was thinking that too, but there is an up and down in that game. I was thinking more like something someone would make on an atari 2600.

I made a one-dimensional game once. It was even sort of playable, provided you were not colorblind. I'll have to reupload it though.

Wouldn't it need to be limited to a 320x1 resolution or something along those lines?

I don't think you need to limit the screensize. The interface could be 2D. 3D games usually have 2D interfaces as well.

I made a 1D game once... but it was really easy to cheat on if you had a ball mouse.

You basically had to move your mouse from the bottom of the screen to the top, and back, as many times as you could, perfectly up and down. If you moved left or right, by even 1 pixel, you lost and had to start over.

Can different objects move in a different dimension? Like the player moves along the X dimension while various other things move only along the Y dimension...?

See, this is one of my issues with that, it could really be taken either way. On the one hand you're only using 1 dimensional controls, but enemies and obstacles are using 2 dimensions.

How about a rhythym game in which there is one line filled with colored blocks and a small gap in between. Each time you click on a different block, it changes into a ball of the same color. When the ball hits another block or another ball, a different sound is played. At the beginning of each level, you are given a tune to listen to. Your goal is to recreate that tune by experimenting with different sounds produced by different balls and blocks. The whole game only travels on one dimension, but the vibrant colors and sounds make up for the lack of complexity.

It was the best I could come up with on short notice, but I think that if executed properly, it could work out fairly well

There are those who live to win, and those who win to live. There is no in between.

To imagine a 1D game try putting yourself in the shoes of a 2D cartoon and what they would 'see'. It'd just be a single pixel horizontally or vertically. Bet it could be quite fun to try actually.

Not really, but feel free to add to the discussion. The more people's views we get the better we can actually nail down some guidelines and the like.
