I wouldn't really say they're that comparable. Granted they're both fantasies, but they're also both aimed at slightly different age groups. Harry Potter is a lot more family orientated where as LOTR is more understandable to teens +

Also the child actors/ actresses in Harry Potter are crap.

They are different-- I like them both. The LOTR books have a very awesome feel about them, while the Harry Potter books are obviously aimed at tweens... :\ The LOTR movies are exceptional, but don't quite capture the books' atmosphere and presence... (Which is to be expected of all movies of books, and this one in particular, whose underlying message is not one the general media cares about.) The Harry Potter movies are also aimed at tweens. >_> Nonetheless, they are both good. I wouldn't compare them. (Especially since one of them is actually a bit deeper than the other, a giant metaphor which just so happens to also have fantastic storylines and characters. )

I could go on for ages about what I think of LOTR and JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis and everything, but none of you care.

Maybe sometime later... I shoulda put, "I could come up with interesting thoughts and conversation topics about it." It's a bit harder when you are addressing a keyboard.

Oh, and just to be clear, I don't have oodles to say about J.K. Rowling-- in case you might've got a bit confused about C.S. Lewis. The only thing I have about the Harry Potter series that bugs me is that it was written by someone who would be so shallow as to declare Dumbledore gay AFTER she wrote the books. My thoughts on homosexuality aside, that's just plain dumb.

I found the book of LOTR pretty dull actually, far too much time spent creating this alternate world in every slight monotonous detail (who cares for maps, fake languages, genealogies of elves and all this rubbish?). The story got lost somewhere in all the pointless description. I wanted to read a book and what I got was half atlas, half history textbook. The film, however, cut a lot of this crap out and is very good to watch.

I used to love Harry Potter books back in the day, but I grew out of them (like everyone should in my opinion!). The films are alright, I've seen a couple, pretty good adaptations really.

OH... J.K. Rowling? Blech. Don't like her at all. I kinda thought you got mixed up there with the two; wasn't quite sure though.

Agree 100% Lord of the Rings was cool to watch but boring to read (I only read the first two chapters).
Harry Potter, I actually enjoyed reading (I only read the first book though).

You're right. It's not fair to compare Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings so such brilliant works as the Discworld novels.

I started reading it, then my swedish teacher told me to read another book. In the end, I didn't finish either one.

The moral of the story, don't disrupt Phredreeke reading.
