Why would you play a crappy console port of it when the PC version is freeware now?

I didn't realise it was freeware... Are you sure about this? Also the fourth chapter on the PSX isn't avaliable on the PC versions, although I believe maybe one or two levels from it may be, such as Duke Burger.

I'm pretty sure it is. I know with certainty that they made the engine open-source and that 3D Realms has been pretty consistent in regards to making all their old stuff free. Poke around the internet and find a copy of the PC version regardless (or even buy it for $5 somewhere...). It's well worth it compared to any of the console ports.

Willy: I thought the 1998 build of the game was running on a version of the Quake engine, or am I mistaken?

IIRC they've released the source, but the game itself is not free. If you have the game resources (that is, a full version of the original game) you can make use of the enhancements such as jfDuke.

It's not freeware, but the fourth episode "The Birth" is available on PC. It's in the the Atomic Edition / Plutonium Pak. I've completed it.

3D Realms / Apogee is definitely not consistent in making all their old stuff free. Even the original Secret Agent isn't freeware yet and they still sell Wacky Wheels in their online store.

Yeah, Kurby. They started out with the Quake engine, then moved over to the unreal engine. Think maybe The first trailer was from Quake, then the second was the polished unreal engine.

Same with Quake and Doom. And Wolfenstein 3D I believe.

Quake 2 engine, actually or at least according to a magazine that had the trailer said. I've still got it somewhere. merrormies.

I thought the 4th episode was a bit poo to be honest. I got it with some Duke X-Treme collection or something mad. The final boss was a bit creepy though and it taught me to hate those grinding warehouse levels.

The PS1 version's fourth chapter is different to the PC Atomic Edition/Plutonium pak's "The Birth" chapter. I can't remember the name of it, but the first level is deffinatly not that Mission Impossible/Area 51 themed map. It's impossibly puzzling, I've been stuck on it since it first came out..

Edit: Just loaded it up - The fourth chapter on PSX is entitled "Plug And Pray"

Edit AGAIN: Here is a link to the first level: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=eUgjVukXyOQ

More like, eDuke32. That one comes with a lot of mapping/scripting enhancements too.

Duke 3D still costs money. But that being said, about two years ago PC Gamer was given permission by 3D Realms to distribute the full version for free on the CD's that came with the magazine.
