Which do you prefer? Horizontal shoot 'em ups or vertical? Whatís your favorite game from either style?

I actually like the horizontal ones. It just seems like I have more control of my ship or something.

I was thinking about this the other day, the fact of the matter is that Vertical Shootemups are actually 1D Shootemups (as in u only effect your horizontal course)

Horizontal Shootemups are actually 2d Shootemups (as in u effect your horizontal course and your altitude).

Vertical Shootemups seem to be much more arcadish and probably faster pace
Horizontal Shootemups add more strategy into the game, and maybe slower pace.

Since I perfer strategy over button mashing Im going to say Horizontal.

ehm, 2D is 2D no matter what...vertical shooters are in 2D as well....1D means you can only move left/right or up/down...

They're both pretty cool, but I think I like horizontal ones better aswell. Vertical ones normally are all about dodging bullets more than anything. Horizontal shooters often show less of the 'screen' \ have bigger sprites so you can't fit as much on. Which is kind of a good thing normally. But yeah, that's all I have to say really.

I like verticals better, the main reason for this was Tyrian.

Horizontal favourite: Interpose.

Just make one thing sure when making a shmup: make sure it can be controlled with the mouse.

Horizontals tend to have more varied and interesting environments, and the backgrounds are often as much of a threat as the enemies.

In verticals the environtments tend to be purely cosmetic, though you tend to get more bullet curtains.

I like bullet hell, but I'd rather play rRootage than any particular vshmup. So I generally prefer horizontal shooters.

I refuse to play mouse controlled shmups...

Thatís an interesting point about the environments though. I'd never thought of that.

Hm, Hishnak, why would you refuse to play mouse-controlled shmups? As long as you can control them with both the mouse and keyboard, and as long as they have good inertia, I'd say it's only for the better. Just look at how much better Tyrian becomes because of it!

Joe u beat me to the punch I was going to say R-type

as I was saying in 1D and 2d - its not like the actual movement its like the actual plane flying axis

maybe its really 2d and 3d - vertical are speed and course - while horizontal are speed course and altitude
