I'd assume that since most of you have grasp on minute detail from spending so much time manipulating pixels, that you'd all fair pretty damn well in photoshop. If for some absolutely odd reason you haven't tried it, I'd suggest checking it out. Here's some examples I post for your viewing pleasure. Post your own. Be sure to include your stance on constructive critisizm just to be safe.
This one kinda blows, actually. I spent roughly an hour on it. Nothing too special. Threw it together for a friend.
Again, nothing too fancy. This pic makes it look like I have some kind of huge, cancerous growth on my face. I don't. It's fat.
There wasn't a whole lot of photoshoppery done in this, actually. It's just a simple color change. To get the "vampire" effect I just put highlighter pen all over my face, turned on my black light, tried to look all mad, and took a picture.
A CD cover I made just for the heck of it. As you can tell, the hair is a little "off". I didn't spend a whole lot of time trying to make it look natural. You get the idea, though.

I drew this one from scratch... with me mouse. I'm a little proud of it. I just wish I would have done it in a larger resolution so I could have thrown in actual hordes of people bum-rushing my gigantic, floating head instead of hordes of stick figures.
Contrary to popular belief, I didn't just run a posterize filter on this and blur it out. I actually went in and determined different color variances then selected them all out manually (with the poly lasso) and filled them in. In retrospect, since so many people have given me crap about taking shortcuts, I wish I had done this the easy way. This picture took me HOURS.

I used to have a tablet, too. Unfortunately, my best friend's brother "borrowed" it and lost the pen for good. I haven't been buggered to buy another since. That's some damn good mouse-control then, man.

I have one of those cheap-ass optical mice that studders every few minutes and starts jumping all over the screen. I do the best I can with it, because again... I just haven't been bothered to replace it as of yet. Once I get another Wacom I'll be good.

Gimp is a lot harder to use than Photoshop. In theory, Gimp IS better because it allows more of a "raw control" over an image, but unless you REALLY know what you're doing screwing around with all those variables and sliders, you can seriously screw up your image.
I've yet to see any image in Gimp that puts photoshop results to shame, even by a slight margin. That must be because Gimp isn't all that popular and the people who do use it don't know every nook and cranny, option and menu in the program. Can't really blame them, though. Gaim has a very steep learning curve if you're not familiar with graphics editing in general.
