Well, i guess I cought the music fever that was going aroung here awhile ago. The past few days i've been playing aroung with Garage Band on my mom's Intel iMac. I came out with 4 songs of reasonable length and quality(and about 7 that were never finished). Now, I know this is nowhere near as good as most of the music on this site, but I just wanted some feedback so that I can improve future songs (or even these).

The first real song I ever made:
http://www.keatontech.com/Song1.mp3

This one isn't the best ever, but it's ok, i think:
http://www.keatontech.com/Song2.mp3

This one is my favorite, kinda rocky and such:
http://www.keatontech.com/Song3.mp3

The most recent one, kinda catchy:
http://www.keatontech.com/Song4.mp3

Anyway, I hope you like them, and please don't critisize them just because I did them, i'm looking for feedback (either positive or negative) not more insults. Thanks for listening!

Ugh, garageband is silly. All songs in it sound the same. You're not actually creating anything new, you're placing already-created samples on a grid. Start a band or something.

Actually the only song that uses pre-made loops at all is the 3rd one, and that's just one of the drum sets. The rest I played with my keyboard. I'd get ACID or logic or something, but they're too expensive for me right now.

I loved Acid Pro, but I haven't used it since either 2.0 or 3.0.

My version of MPT has some glitch, when it sometimes doesn't save or the notes get screwed up. After you posted about that in the download which had that crappy song, I downloaded it to check, and there was something wrong with the music file. It wasn't origionally like that.

Yeah, but I don't think composing is a very big hobby of mine, so I don't really want to spend money on it.

Get ModPlug or Milky Tracker. They're good, and they're free.

Is it just me or does ModPlug have the most complicated UI ever? Well, I'll probably take the time to learn it this summer of something.

I hate ModPlug.

Just because Mac made Garage Band doesn't mean it sucks. I love how the electric guitars sound.

I'm not saying Mac is good...but just because Garage Band is an Apple product doesn't make it bad.

I disliked the first song.

The second one was too repetive.

The third one is pretty good.

The forth one is kind of a mess.

The electric guitar only sounds good because it is a SAMPLE. The way the guitar sounds through midi all depends on the soundcard. Unless you use MPT; that way you can use any sample to make a better song. MPT also has a hella lotta cool effects.

If you are looking for a really killer music creation app you need to get your hands on Reason 2.5 by propellorheads. The software is extremely hard to use at first and looks really complicated but for those of you with the patience this is the tool for you. trust me.

Just to be clear on this, are you talking about MPT or OpenMPT? Because I find OpenMPT very crowded even after using the original for a number of years.

I hate ModPlug's UI because it's inferior to the Piano Roll-layout in every way. Also, I like using my keyboard, and I can't get it to work the way I want due to the one-note-channel-layout. I certainly hope I have misunderstood something, because I like .mod-music (because of the neat size), but don't have the energy to use another program to test chords and melodies with the keyboard, and then click in every note in ModPlug.

And Bibin, WTF are you talking about? "You're not creating anything new, you're placing already-created samples on a grid". And exactly how do you not use already-created samples in ModPlug? A song is original as long as you "place the samples on the grid" yourself. Ever heard of "composing"?

I like the third song, Keaton. I'm sure it could be used in a game or so if it was longer or loopy. The others were not exactly anything special, but you seem to already know that... good start, though. Keep it up!

PS. An improvement would probably be trying to add more instruments to add depth to the song. It's probably a good investment to learn some music theory, too.

I think Bibin meant the type of program where you have a library of pre-made loops and just have to rearrange them into something resembling music, rather than compose for yourself.

You don't have to click in every note in Modplug; you can record notes to a channel by using Record Select (right-click menu on the channel name) and entering notes as the song plays. I have to admit that I find Ctrl+Q,A,C,Ving my way around much easier, though.

I don't think many other trackers have significantly different representations of notes from MPT. It could be nice to have a convertor or extension that would show the notes, though.

Yeah, you're right, Wong. The problem for me is that I like to be able to play chords, but can't in Modplug, or any tracker I've found out there. I suppose the format simply isn't made for using instruments as channels, allowing for piano rolls.

As for Garageband, it's not some EJay-program. You can very well compose original music in it (although it isn't the best program for it). I think you mistake garageband for something else, Bibin... and next time you're going to refer to patterns or loops, don't say "samples".

Hehehehehehe

I composed a lot of original music on hip hop ejay; and it wasn't hip hop music either. The only things i used from ejay was the drum samples (individual drum sounds, not loops). Only catch was all the songs i composed had to be at 120bpm! Well... that wasn't the only catch.

Now i've got cubase sx3, and its awesome. Whats really great is if you get synthedit then you can easily create you're own VSTI (Virtual Studio Technology Instrument) as if you were wiring up an analogue synthesizer. If you have a MIDI keyboard, then creating a virtual mellotron then playing it on your keyboard just totally kicks ass. You can get some amazing sounds.

Lots of people use prefabricated drum loops, samples etc. and as long as they're royalty free ones, it doesn't really matter. If their song is just a exclusively prefabs placed on a grid, then not much can be said for their current level of originality but hey you've gotta start somewhere.
