There are a million topics about midi programs, but this request is a little diffrent. Is there any good music-composing software out there capable of making film-score/rockish music? I could really use one like that, because I'm working on a rock-opera (don't laugh ), and I need a good program to compose music in. Currently I'm using Microsoft Direct Music Producer, but it's not complex enough (I don't want a complex interface, I mean as far as multi-layered music and so on).

Does anyone know of a program like this?

I always recommend Modplug Tracker - http://www.modplug.com

Although the results you'll get from it are largely dependent on the quality of samples that you're using.

Try Fruity Loops Studio. It's really great, it has synthesized guitars, keyboards, drums and the guitar sounds awesome! None of the sounds sound synthesized.

After ages of prejudice against it, I downloaded the FL Studio 6 demo to try it out. The samples provided are pretty decent and you can get something that sounds passable by just chucking loops in, but it seems so awkward to edit melodies.

I find it impossible to make melodies on FL Studio without using a bass synth noise. Every other "instrument" creates monotones.

I like the synth guitars and stuff, but the strings sound fake.

Fruity Loops is good for guitars, but as Noodle said, the other stuff is kinda flat.

Fruityloops, like just about any other high-end sequencer, is VST/VSTi and DXi compatible. Do some research and learn to use your warez, dudes.

Nah, actually Lazarus, I don't think the guitars sound good at all.

I do like the drums though.

Really? I love the guitars...compare them to Microsoft Direct Music Producer or most other synth-programs. Most of them sound like cheap rip-offs.

Fruity Loops sounds extremely realistic, you just have to know what you're doing. I love FL Keys, it sounds like a real piano. And the strings are amazing too. If you're using samples then that's a different thing, but use the generators...
