Okay so after nearly another ruined thread, Ive decided to repost some work from my new and improved Project.
Ive decided to change alot of the graphics, when I have the time. The RPG's style will completely change. It will still have iso.sprites, but it will be less serious and more colorful. The gameplay will still be the same. I wont be able to properly work on the game till next weekend now,due to a uni project deadline on thursday Ok heres the screens again, and once I remake them, Ill post the new screens so they can be compared. If this makes no sense call 911 OR 999 or whatever you do with phones.
The story is still the same. An evil witch by the name of naroma uses a time gate to gain power from different eras. As she does so, people are sucked through into a fantasy world. One of these people happens to be the main characters father, and husband to a loving mother. Together, the main character and mother go searching for him, by bravely diving through the time-gate.
Nastyman has very kindly made music for the game
Keatontech will hopefully be able to provide me with a reasonable battle system!

Perhaps he means there's a fair bit more to it than the battle engine. Even if the battle engine is fine it would be easy to screw up the rest of it.
DD, I think you either need to just post this as a preview or get a devlog on one of the klik sites that offer them. Constantly posting threads on the progress of your game isn't cool.
yes, your being reasonable, but I had very good reason, yes I didnt help the flamewars on my previous posts, but "advice" like, "your ideas are gay" and "your using this as an excuse to show off" tends to offend me. I would never ever suddenly tell someone their ideas are gay because I dont like them.
What if they actually are gay? Dude, you're making a game where the hero gets followed around by his mother. You have to admit that's somewhat on the queer side. Maybe it'll turn out to be a good game, which I hope for the sake of the community if not you, but you can't possibly have expected that to go without comment.
So you'd be ashamed to be seen with your mother? The woman that gave birth to you and looked after you, loved you? She doesnt follow him around, she goes as part of a team. Shes also a young, hot mother so its fine.

There's a difference between 'being seen with your mother' and 'going on a quest with your mother'. And you did make it sound like she would be a support character, healing etc., so that would pretty much add up to 'following you around'.
Yes as I stated the mother is part of the team. Now, in a team, each member has different Jobs, hers happens to be that of healing. She does however, also attack. Eika, the main character isn't the leader of the team and so shes not really following you around.

It'd be cooler if you had the option of changing the jobs. Give the mom a monk class for one battle, a summoner or whatnot for the next, and so on. Definitly would be better than just having a boring healer around.

I think the point is that you don't need to keep posting the same threads. I personally think the game looks good - but as Radix said, a preview or blog would be much better and easier, rather than posting a new thread every time you decide to change something within your game. I'm not being mean, just offering some advice.
yes, but as Ive stated, its not because something in the game changed, it was because of the flamewars they were being turned into, admitedly I was no angel. I would have love just one long thread showing the progress of my work.
Dude, with your mother following you around and such, and giving everyone different jobs and such, why not just make them the Partridge Family and travel around the world in a technicolor bus.
Anyway, the one screen you've shown does look nice, it's well detailed. From your story, it sounds nice, but I really, really think you should link up with someone with a bit more experience. You said yourself you couldn't program a platformer, so what makes you think you can tackle an RPG? We're talking inventory, stats, menu, saving; and that's just quickly off the top of my head what is required (well not required, but expected certainly) besides a battle system. That's a hell of a lot of work, then we add to that your relative inexperience for game design, we're adding up to a formula for disaster. RPG's are all about balance, when the balance goes off, the gameplay seriously suffers. Balance is an extremely hard thing to get right, especially when you are inexperienced.
Anyway, good luck either way, just trying to pass along a few thoughts.
I like the art and that, but please please please get rid of the mother idea. It must be the worst idea for an RPG I've heard of. Quite a lot of people would be ashamed to go on a trip with their mum.
And anyway, aren't these sort of RPG a lot to do with coming-of-age? I mean, you're meant to leave home, saying goodbye to "Mom" (shudder) and become a monster-killing man, not bring Mummy with you so she can give you biscuits and suck your nob every two minutes.
Right. Okay. I can easily make simple menus using counters. I can easily make 8-direction movements. I need to learn how to do the whole save feature. Keaton (I think) is helping me with battle system. Not sure about inventory at the moment.
The whole Idea of the story is that you went with your mother, but now, it looks like youll either be going alone or with your brother lol. Seeming as so many people are ashamed to be seen with their mothers, which I personally find really sad, they must have embarrasing mothers because mines quite with it, any whoo we'll see. This WILL NOT be a disaster.
Shab, Exactly, its ALWAYS friends on the adventure. The father has been taken, they both want to save him, they go together. Shes an extremely protective mother since she lost her husband. Get over it guys, im sticking with that idea!

Well, mixes are always nice I think, if used correctly.
I know what, you could keep the idea as long as the main character is aware of how sad he looks, and has arguments with his mam. "Stop rubbin spit on my face", that kind of thing.
Hmm yes, yes that would work, well. In the first little bit I made of the old version, He took his robot-gadget with him and the mother kept winging because she thought she had thrown in out and its was beeping and annoying her.
I'm making an rpg as well but ive chosen not to post anything about it yet, maybe a preview at ectoprods or something later.
But making new topics every few days could be seen as overhyping.
go with the mother idea if you want to, There is definately potential for some embarrasing moments, the boy could meet a npc girl he likes in a shop and the mother may make a comment about buying him some new pyjama's whilst they are shopping.
I supose it can work if done right.
anyway good luck with this, you'll need it because RPG's are hard to stick with believe me.
Yea this whole 'i refuse to have any assosiation with my mum' thing is a bit sad. Sure I was like that when I was 14 but now I'm 20 its totally different. Last week me and my mum went into town, practically bought me a new wardrobe in a mass Selfridges, River Island and House of Frasier spending spree. and went on for a chinese meal later.
Course if you're '2 kewl 4 skool' then I can see why you'd like to cut all ties with parents.
This "could" be something... Im not going to jump to conclusions now, but I do agree that the mother idea is well... lets just say you could think of something alot better than that. Not to say it's a bad idea I just think the story could be a little bit better.(my oppinion) Atleast think of it this way. If more than one person is saying the same thing maybe you should listen. In the end your gonna have to decide what you want in the game not me or anybody else. I just ask that you remember to think for the good of the game to make it better than what it already is now.(A simple story) What if Tails was Sonic's mom instead following him around. It would be stange, funny but strange. Maybe the mom could be his sister? Its a suggestion.
Jimmi, RIVER ISLAND ROX! I adore Nushu from there, I have about 8 pairs suprisingly you dont see alot of people wearing them, theyre reasonably priced and comfortable!
Im not going to change my orignal Idea because like, 6 or 7 people think going around with your mother is sad. Like Noodle suggested, I can perhaps make it comic in places. Trust me. It will be fine. Im just trying to create a nicely sized base-sprite for characters at the moment. Its Tricky! I dont want him to be tall, Id like him to be like, Zelda size. Im gonna work on it in the afternoon when I wake up!
