For if you don't know:

Sphere is an RPG creation system (http://sphere.sf.net/), it requires knowing how to script.

I'm using Sphere for a few weeks now, and I'm looking for some good tutorials, like, how to use window styles and blitting text in text boxes. Stuff like that.
Someone has some tuts?

I'd never even heard of it. With a quick search I found some tutorials for you though.

What kind of scripting does it use?

AsparagusTrevor: It uses a mix between JavaScript and C++, it had a special name ,I think it was spidermonkey.

AndyUK: Is RPG maker better?
I used Verge3 for a while, too, but the main program didn't work correctly. And I knew Sphere already a few years ago, but then I was too lazy to learn scripting.

I hate RPG creation systems. They're all too focused on tiny sprites, a similar leveling system, and either the FF, Zelda, or Secret of Mana style battle engines.

I don't see why you shouldn't use MMF, except when it comes to making a conversation engine. MMF does everything nicely, allows high resolutions, and allows everything to look nice and clear. And it's got plenty of flexibility .

Now if only someone would make a conversation engine that doesn't require around 3 events per conversation topic...

Ever tried Sphere? You can define almost EVERYTHING yourself.

I'm using Sphere right now to very carefully start learning programming... and I'm a bit bored of MMF, lately.

Why not just use MMF to make RPGs?

rpg maker sorta sucks, It limits you way too much and its very difficult to change the basic tiles or battle engine.
basically its not very good if you want control over your game. It forces you to use midi or wav as the music (i think rpg maker 2003 allows mp3s)

oh yeah and it is illegal.

Well, I know when I used it it was an illegal translation, I think that was RPGMaker 95. Blegh, I hated it (although I used it for a school assignment and got awesome marks, because I put the teacher in the game and let you walk around our project, which was to design a theme-park sorta thing).
I wouldn't use this Sphere thing simply because it can never be flexible enough, in that if someone's already thought of something and has support for it than I'll want to do something else.

yeah its basically made by some japanese company but for sale only in japan. So some English speaking people translated it and made it available for us non jap speakers. So its not really hurting the company (unless we were going to import it)

they are up to rpgmaker 2004 (i think) and i had a look, its okay but the battle is restricted to first person views.

Radix: It IS very flexible, because it uses a very extended scripting language and it doesn't have premade stuff (like, do it yourself, you lazy bum!). The best thing to look how flexible it is is by going to sphere.sf.net and downloading it.
There's also unlimited maps, map layers, scripts, sprite sizes and all other stuff you can make with it is unlimited, too. I've seen lots of other type games are made with it.

I keep rambling, don't I? I just mean, first try it before saying it's bad.

What I mean is, if someone's already thought of it, I'll want to do something different. No matter how flexible it is it has to have some limitations, otherwise it'd just be an authoring tool like MMF rather than an RPG maker.

RPGs tend to have little breaks, mini-games and/or gameplay changes, though, so it's a shame it's hard to do.

As far as I know, people made break-out, text-adventures and even an asteroids clone.

Someone wrote an operating system for your penis, called PENIX. Just because you can make it do sometheing it wasn't meant to do doesn't mean you can do anything in it.

Of course it's limited. But not as much as MMF . But... Actually, never mind. My Sphere started to act wierd. It won't read all variables and functions anymore
