Technically an axonometric projection, most of us know it simply as isometric. This engine basically projects objects in a 3D space onto a 2D plane. It could be used for a board game to change perspective on pieces, or to make an easy psuedo-3D game.

Here are the controls:

Arrow Keys - Camera Movement
WASD - Camera Rotation

Clever stuff, but kind of limited in its usefulness. You really need to be able to rotate/skew a background image - even for a simple board game, you'd still want to have a checkerboard pattern or something.
It's quite do-able using HWA.

It greatly improves performance and also allows you to use pixelshaders (including the "3D shader" which could be useful here).
