Is there a way I can have the background of a frame glow different colours smoothly? A large active object could be used but it would take a lot of time and probably produce a lot of slow down. Is there another way?

Gradient object might get the job done. Not sure about speed though as I've never used it.

Use an active system box and place it on a lower layer. Make it as big as the window size, and change its RGB values smoothly during runtime.
My old old Mode7 example does this with a Mode7 fog effect
