Knights 1.0

After I lost all the code to my last RTS try "Merc" I finally got around doing not just another version, but another game - improved in pretty much all aspects, hopefully.

"KNIGHTS" is an RTS with all the classic elements: Gather ressources, build an army, fight and destroy the enemy.

The Game features the following:

- 3 different unit types, Knights, Archers and peasants
- 11 different types of constructions
- 5 resources
- 9 missions to solve, ranging from standard build and kill to military missions and special goal missions
- A full on tutorial mission explaining everything you need to know
- In interactive city with AI, build roads and your peasants will automatically grab a job

Graphics are original, so is the music and some of the soundeffects. There might be some issues with it still and I'm working on some. Hope you enjoy, was fun to make it.

WARNING: The game seems to be quite processor intensive unfortunately...
While it runs smooth on my Core 2 Duo it gets pretty slow on my old P4 3 Ghz processor. It's not the graphics, but the code that seems to be the problem. So sorry for everyone with a slow computer. I am trying to fix this as good as I can.

Very nice

Huge disagreement.

Looks nice. downloading...

This game is great

Well done. Good game!

looks cool

Posted by axel 24th October, 2006

Didn't like it at all. The whole system is just weird, it doesn't even play like a normal RTS. All graphics/music/sound seem to be ripped, and the music doesn't fit at all in some places

Posted by Flava 24th October, 2006

I quite thought the opposite!

Posted by axel 24th October, 2006

That's because you're silly and you don't play RTS games!

Posted by Hugo B. 24th October, 2006

I don't understand why this game already has two thumbs down, is it something personal? Axel, what is in your opinion a 'normal RTS'. Do you mean a game has to be a 100% C&C clone to be good? I agree that the lack of units only allows a limited degree of tactics used, but i had a hard time beating the levels and -most importantly- had fun doing it.
I also agree that the sound seems to be ripped (and the music perhaps), but isn't this the case in 90% of all click-games and is it disturbing? I'd rather have high quality ripped sounds that crappy original. Graphics however should be original and i think this is the case here, because -although they look nice - the graphics in no way meet "professional" standards. Marco, i think you did a great job and i can only hope that version 1.0 means that you will be making an update with more diverse units!

Posted by Marco von Moos 24th October, 2006

Thanks for all the comments! Yeah, the 1.0 indicates indeed that I will try to update it, fix issues mentioned here or elsewhere (if I agree with them of course ) and generally try to add things to the game whenever I find time. More unit types and buildings are definately on the list.

The graphics are original, as in: I modelled, textured and animated each and every unit you see on screen. So they're original in every sense of the word, not even one dot of the geometry was generic. (For some textures I did use my texture archive though )

The music is composed by myself too using Garageband (And yeah, the level music will most likely be changed, it is the one I made for my earlier game) and the soundeffects are mostly recorded myself too - I'm a filmmaker, so I have a stock library of samples. Some selfmade, some not.

It's cool with me if you don't like it Axel, no worries.
Allthough why do you keep coming back then? Usually, when I don't like something, I put it away and get on with my life.

Posted by danjo 24th October, 2006

as an RTS - its ok.
it severely lacks simple things like options.
dont you know what cnc goes with this? ive got a good idea - lets put them all in.

im going to give you a thumbs up - but im struggling with that.

Posted by axel 25th October, 2006

I'm not saying that it should be a C&C ripoff, what I'm saying is that there are certain standards for RTS games today, and this game just doesn't meet those standards. That's my opinion anyway.

omg a playable klikk-rts?
looks quite interresting
ill download it

Posted by Bricnic 25th October, 2006

Actually this is really quite well made. Thumbs up from me. There's the odd spelling mistake, and the interface can be a little strange (such as scrolling being jerky at times, and other things such as not being able to see the limit for each building in the menu), but on the whole, this is very impressive for a klik RTS.
Good work!

It's a shame that even other clickers always try to compare an MMF game made by one person with professional games where dozens of specialists work for years at.

Axel, what standards please? There once was a standard called Pong for computer games. Does this mean that nobody is even allowed to create something else than a pong game? Geez ...

From me: a big thumbs up for even coming this far!

Posted by Marco von Moos 25th October, 2006

I tried to build something of my own within the limits of MMF - and not just recreate any RTS, but put in some of my own elements. I find it kind of amusing that this is held against me I must admit. Well, you can't please anyone I guess.

I'm curious Axel. So there's a click-game on this site that meets todays standards? Could you give me a link?

Okay, I pretty much fucked it up there, you can't compare click games made by one person with commercial games made by teams of specialists, true. But...

Axel, what standards please? There once was a standard called Pong for computer games. Does this mean that nobody is even allowed to create something else than a pong game? Geez ...

That's completely different. I'm just saying that when you play a game of a specific genre (in this case an RTS game), you have some expectations, some things that just define that genre. I'm not saying that any games that differ from these "standards" are shit and should be banned, but this game just didn't meet my standards.

For example, when you play a platformer, you're expecting to see a guy jumping on platforms, in a 2D sideview perspective. I was expecting something else from this game, it just didn't feel like an RTS to me.

It's not my fault we haven't yet seen any really good klik RTSes this far, but have you seen Terminal Orbit? That's the sort of thing I'd like to see. Again, I'm not saying every single klik RTS should be like TO. Good RTS games are just so damned hard to make in MMF, but again, that doesn't make this game good in my opinion

So YOUR standards are the standards for RTS? Even when a mayor publisher would introduce new features or different gameplay and they don't fit into old categories? Hey, this happens all the time with every new game! That's one of the basics of gamedesign. DON`t repeat yourself again and again.

It is one thing to say you dislike it. It's another thing to say it is bad. It is pretty well above the normal standard here. Sure, this game could be better. But that are minor flaws like the scolling. Quickly fixable with an camera active. And so definitely not worth a thumbs down.

For me your second posting seems to show the truth: Envy! Not the first time that i read something about ripped graphics and sounds just because the stuff is a bit better than similar stuff here. I wouldn`t even think about that a game contains ripped graphics when it looks a bit shinier. When in doubt: ask! Not everybody is unable to produce good looking graphics or good sounding music just because he uses a click tool. This is the 21st century. Making good looking graphics isn't longer black magic.

Just my five cents

Who's getting really defensive now, huh?

I never said my standards were the standards for RTS games. It may have sounded like it in my first post, but I never said or implied such thing in my second one.

So why do you think we categorize games into different genres then anyway? A platformer can be different, and still be a platformer. It isn't as if every new game on TDC should have its own one-game genre just for itself. Pshh.

I clearly stated that I was only expressing my opinion on the game. And it's also my own decision if I vote up or down for a game.

Oh sorry! I voted thumbs down for a game, so that must mean I'm jealous! Will you please stop accusing me of things. I didn't even like the graphics of this game that much. They looked ripped because they were 3D rendered, which, like you said, is a rare sight on this site. Personally I don't even like 3D graphics in 2D games. And I never said they WERE ripped, I said they SEEM to be ripped, which means that I was not sure.

Can we now just leave this be, or at least use the amazing PM system instead. We've taken enough commenting space already.

I just wanted you to think about it. Seems that we think this different that a further discussion wouldn't make any sense anyway ...

Posted by axel 25th October, 2006

Yeah, I guess so.

Posted by Marco von Moos 25th October, 2006

Axel, as I said, I'm absolutely cool with you not liking it.

What I do wonder about though, is why did you mention you didn't like it MORE then once in the same thread, just to disagree? Seems just wonderous you put extra effort into it. What's your motivation?

A phenomenon I often watched on forums - it's always kind of intrigued me. Some people seem to dislike stuff with a passion, for whatever reason (eg, they like NOTHING about it, everything about it sucks and they come back over and over again to repeat what they've already said). Never really understood that.

Oh yeah, and sorry for the typos in the game or my posts, I'm not a native english speaker / or writer for that matter.

Posted by axel 25th October, 2006

Uh, I was debating with Tiles. I have nothing like that against your game, really. I just simply didn't like it

Posted by Joshtek 25th October, 2006

This game seems pretty good. Is there a save facility?

Posted by Marco von Moos 25th October, 2006

I meant before that Axel. Well, but anyways. Thanks for your honest opinion and answering the questions - even if you don't like it, it is much appreciated!

There should be an autosave command really, but apparently it doesn't work. I'll have to fix that (the game is supposed to save your progress after each level and save it to the Harddisk so you can continue next time)
I'll try to fix that asap!

Great game!

Posted by Simon Colmer 28th October, 2006

well i liked it! Congrats! Thumbs up - WOOOOH

Posted by Marco von Moos 28th October, 2006

Thanks! To the other three who didn't like it. Any comments on why? Or is was it because of a general "this doesn't play how I expected" thing too?

comments are always appreciated.

An good RTS game. I do find the game play a bit slow cos they takes forever to reach the spot and the save function is not there yet. Might put off with a lot of gamers. Thums up for your efforts

Posted by Johnny Look 29th October, 2006

good effort.

Posted by falkon 3rd November, 2006

nice

Posted by Tim camm 22nd November, 2007

Brilliant. I can't stand it when someone puts a great game like this down.

This is one of the best games I have found on this click site

What I am about to do is check to see what games Axel has made If he has any for download, download them I shall!
