Making the menus user-friendly
Posted 12th Aug 10, by 3kliksphilip
Something I've been fairly mean about in previous games is user friendliness in games. When you load up a game, it might take a while to find out how to navigate the menus, or there might be bugs in the HUD that would need to be worked around in order to play the game. However, in this game I've tried as best as I can to make it user friendly.

It was a challenge to make a menu system that you can navigate through quickly and easily, and satisfyingly. I spent hours placing the sound effects in the right areas, and minimising the time taken between pressing a button and the action being performed, while still retaining the fade in/out special effects. I even spent a while deciding on the perfect delay between switching menu selections if you were to hold down a button. You might say this is pointless, but it really makes this game feel more professional and FUN to use than before. Heck, I explore the menu screens just for fun some times! (But not often!)

In this game, if you start the game and already have a player account, you only need to mash the fire button and you'll end up where you last saved. If you have two players who have saved in the same location, instead of asking you whose spawn point you'd like to spawn from, it will automatically jump to the one you have both saved from.

It's the small things, like these, that change a shoddy and messy game into a smooth, fun experience. Even if it doesn't contribute to the game's gameplay at all.
