Status Update and Ancient Demo Version
Posted 26th Jul 09, by Linkman
Seeing as how it's been almost a year to the day since I first announced this project, as well over six months since the last update, I figured I should update everybody on what's going on.

I'll be honest; I was working real hard on the rewrite after I made that last post, working for about a solid month on the main engine and whatnot. And then I stopped. Not because of a bug, but because I'm lazy. I was needing animations for the enemies -- I'm talking about real animation here, not the fake stuff I was using -- and I couldn't bring my lazy rump to do anything about it. So the project just... sat there. I'd try to pick it up every now and then, but I just couldn't find the motivation to do anything. I have a bright future ahead of me.

So, that version sat there for a good three months when I finally got the motivation to do some serious work. Starting to hate the graphics I had made, I scrapped 'em all and came out with this:

These are the current graphics, replacing the disjointed style I'd shown previously.
Feeling proud of myself in my accomplishment, I stopped working on it again. I'm an idiot.

BUT... a couple of weeks ago I decided to start the project completely from scratch, featuring the style shown above. Progress has been going steadily, with the main character movement and animation engine already hammered out. I'm currently working on the new level editor so I can more rapidly and easily create levels for the game. After that I'll once again be tackling AI, although this time I'll be writing a custom plugin to squeeze every last bit of speed out of it.

So, now that I've given(most of) the story, I'll fill people in on the improvements over what I last showed:

- Real, honest to God bone animation as opposed to "sine-wave legs", as I will call them. This includes arms that aren't stapled to the gun, but rather reach for the correct spot using IK.

- Much better art style, as can be seen.

- Much, MUCH better level editor, including the ability to do basic lightmapping on the levels.

I'll probably show some screenshots of the latest rewrite soon(what I showed is similar, but from the last rewrite), but for now, enjoy an ancient demo of the game, circa November 2008:

If you find that it runs too slow, or if you only see a white screen, press the "i" key.

WASD moves, space jumps, control might crouch, "e" is used for getting in the helicopter and picking up weapons, middle wheel changes weapons, and left click shoots. In addition "g" might or might not chuck grenades.

NOTE: You MUST unzip the file for the game to work properly.

NOTE 2: You need to press "space" inside the actual game to spawn your character.

Looks even nicer than before - you know i was very vocal about this game and i still am... it looks even better than before and i prefere the newer art style. Hope you keep on going with this, i think it'll be great!

I REALLY like that art style.

EDIT: Game isn't working. I unzipped it, but part of the screen is chopped off and the character does not appear in the level.

New art style is great, I prefer it over the old style. Keep going

Thanks for the comments guys. Glad you're all digging the new art style.

@OldManClayton - Blah, sorry about that. You need to press "space" to spawn the character in game. Also, part of the menu is chopped off because I changed the window to 4:3 instead of 16:9 at one point without changing the menu.

Things just got awesome... TO THE MAX.

Glad to see you motivated yourself back to work!
