New Preview: Active Voxel Extension
News posted 21st October, 2008 by -Liam-
Bornemix, is working hard on a really cool looking extension for MMF2, the Active Voxel extension! You can try it out and read all the features and info about it here.

In relation to this, Nick has plans for including the use of this extension on his upcoming game, Project: Roller Coaster! Hopefully we wont have to wait too much longer for the finished versions!

Best news post in weeks, and those coaster trains are lush.

That looks awesome!

And btw, can't someone update gotw soon?

Posted by Codemonkey 21st October, 2008

How will nick use the extension?

See image above ^

Posted by Codemonkey 21st October, 2008

I don't get it.

The image above shows the voxel coaster trains which will be in the game, instead of the 2d sprites i was using before (see my avatar).

And you call yourself a Codemonkey tsk tsk

Posted by Codemonkey 21st October, 2008

But I don't get how they will look any differant because it's a side view...

Posted by -Nick- 21st October, 2008

They're side view MOST of the time, but not ALL the time Image

well simply scanning up and down would produce a 3d response. Very awesome extention demo, looking forward to actually implimenting this into something.

Ditto to what Shab said

Now all we need is a active vector extension!

Posted by Sphax 21st October, 2008

But it seems that the voxel version of the train is less detailed than the previous 2D sprite... Is it the case?

Posted by Ski 21st October, 2008

well, it's also quite enlarged...

Posted by -Nick- 21st October, 2008

Nope, infact if you view the voxel train from the side, it is an exact replica, pixel for pixel!

I want to see the 3D portions of Project Roller Coaster!

nice extension.

I'm not exactly sure how this would work in project rollercoaster, but I'm interested to find out!

Posted by Cecilectomy 22nd October, 2008

um. are you serious? it will add detail and extra dimension to anything rendered with the voxel extension. ie-more beautiful. still cant wait for this to come out. nick stop toying with us!

At points the track in project rollercoaster turns on its side, before this extension the entire transition phase from upright to sideways of the coasters animation was done using active objects which did not add up to a very smooth animation, especially when the coaster was moving slower. This extension will smooth out the transition between upright and sideways by rendering all the frames in between in realtime. Also better lighting effects can be achieved with this because it supports normals such that the color intensity of each pixel in the voxil object can change based on what direction the object is facing, that allows for directional lighting and shadowing.

Actually I disagree, I think the original animations are pretty good, this could just work out to be even better.

Posted by UrbanMonk 23rd October, 2008

I didn't say they were bad, just not as smooth, kinda like the original rollercoaster tycoon animations. You could tell they weren't rendered in real time because the animations would kinda "snap" in place when the correct position was reached. Rewatch the project's videos again and you'll see what I mean when the coaster is turning sideways with the seats facing towards the screen, its very evident that the rotation of the coaster was prerendered.

EDIT: Actually scratch that, I was looking at an older video(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AsF7N774WSg), so this problem may have been fixed.

M8 ^D^ I've played it, and the animations are absolutely perfect in every which way

Posted by UrbanMonk 23rd October, 2008

Sry about that, the last time I looked at this project the graphics were still in their early stages, I just watched a newer video. I stand corrected

Posted by -Nick- 23rd October, 2008

No worries guys, it's really nothing to get stressed over!

Posted by UrbanMonk 23rd October, 2008

Whew thanks for telling me, I was really getting stressed!

Posted by OMC 23rd October, 2008

I just realized what this could be used for. Here I was thinking people were going to try to make rudimentary 3D games with it, but then I realized that it's ingenius for making smooth animations-- especially turning ones. If it's all on a pixel-scale, it won't look funny.

Posted by -Nick- 23rd October, 2008

Yes! An example would be a strategy game where the vehicles etc sit upon a 2d world and move around freely.

Posted by UrbanMonk 24th October, 2008

Funny you should say that nick, that's what I wanted to do with it when it was released. Also you could make some great racing and tank battle games.

Posted by OMC 24th October, 2008

INGENIUS! Now if only I had MMF2...
