Engine, Fangame, Competition

Right, there are a couple of things that I've been meaning to put on the front page for a while, and now that I've stopped laughing at the fact that Lordi won the Eurovision Song Contest last night it's as good a time as any. Joshtek and LIJI have put together an example of something that I've been wanting to get working for a while - a True Split Screen Example that uses the Viewport object.

Comments from the Author: First I would like to note that this is "true" split screen in the sense that it does not require you to replicate all your objects, use subapps, etc. Just two events and the right application properties can allow for two "viewports" to be used to focus on different parts of the screen which can scroll independently. You can even put elements such as scores and messages in front of both viewports so that they don't move.

Second, it's a follow-up to the game that divided the community - Super Mario Quest: Deluxe is another fangame remake by DistantJ. And this time it's got a custom platform engine, so you can all quit your moaning.

Comments from the Author: Mario Quest is a platformer with a difference. Once you enter a level, the timer will start to count down from 120 seconds. This is how much time you are allowed to spend in this level, picking up as many stars as you can. If this timer runs out before you can collect all of the stars, you will still advance to the next level. Once you have visited each course, and fought Bowser 3 times, the amount of stars you manage to collect in the time given will affect how the game ends!

And finally, DC oldbie defenestrator has put forward an idea for a summer competition, the thread for which is here. In summary, you're pretty much free to make whatever you want, as long as anthropomorphs feature. And if you don't know what they are, go and spend some more time on the Internet.

HARD ROCK HALLELUJAH! Lordi deserved to win, though there's still a LOL factor on the whole thing.

I hate this contest. Poland tends to send a man called Michal Wisniewski all the time and e tends to make a fool of himself. Having that said -

LORDI ROCKS!!!

(in a KISSish kind of way, but that's one of the classic ways to do that )

In fact, I care about it less every day.
