What's this? A new poll?
News posted 20th January, 2003 by ShadowCaster
I know it's been a while since the poll was last updated, but finally I have been graced with enough motivation to fix a couple of things. The last poll: What competition should DC run next, was won by the "Crappiest Game" option, by twelve points. My original theory was that, while people think they arent very good at one thing or another, everyone can make a crappy game; you dont need to be good at anything to make something stupid. Looking for proof I had a quick glance in the log file and discovered that it was mostly the people that have already released good games that actually voted for this option, and most people who havent released anything yet voted for something else. I guess people new to the scene want to release their first game with a bang, and what better way than by winning a competition? And the people who have already made quite a few games are looking for a break where they can just have fun outside of serious programming. In any event, the Crappiest Game Competition will be the next one to grace DC.

As far as the new poll goes, I'd like to find out what area of game creation most of you are interested in. So far the poll has been up for around 45 seconds and all 3 people who voted so far voted for programming (hey, that would be my option ;)

In other news I'm in the process of creating a script whereby any member of The Daily Click can submit news to the main page (of course an administrator will need to accept it first). Do you think this would be a good addition to DC, or do you think it would be too open for abuse?

i think it is a good idea for the dail click to have. seeing that the admins will be the one maintaing the from page from getting over run by crap

Posted by PlayfulGames 20th January, 2003

yep, good idea. nuff said.

Posted by David Newton (DavidN) 20th January, 2003

It's going to be abused, inevitably, but as long as there's a way to monitor it before it makes the front page there shouldn't be a problem.

wow Splatman and I have recently been working on a game he started 5 years ago in KnP, called Moto The Man. So we thought it was about time we finished it off. It's bound to win crappiest game!! Well, unless Retarded Goat Extreme is entered or something.. :D

Posted by Shen 20th January, 2003

If Retarded Goat enters it'll be no contest. Mainly, people just DC-mail the admins with news, and some people might not know the right coding and tags and stuff.

Posted by CsaR 20th January, 2003

Hmm admins will probably have more to do, cuz i mean, who doesn't want their game on the front page. :D

Posted by Faithtoken 20th January, 2003

To make it harder, the game should be no smaller than 1,0mB and no larger than 1,5mB. And use at least 5 or so scenes/levels...

The news submitting thing is an okay idea, but you need to make it so the number of articles that stay on the front page is a lot bigger. That way, news that someone submits won't be bumped off in like a day or two. The time that a news brief has on the front page is too fleeting already.

I think the crappiest game should have to be reasonably well made, but have the most useless and boring gameplay, because at least that would require some thought. Otherwise it'd be too hard to judge.

Posted by AsparagusTrevor 20th January, 2003

I misunderstood the idea of Crappiest game. I didn't think it'd be a competition to make a crap game, rather a handful of shit games that are nominated. Oh well, I can make a crap game. In fact I started loadsa unfinished crap games rotting away on my hard drive.

Posted by Sly 20th January, 2003

How the hell are you meant to judge a 'crap game' competition? For God's sake, i thought they were having a laugh when they put up that option. And on what basis will it be judged? Hmph? The least amount of effort? The worst graphics? Unoriginal storyline? The worst engine? Think about it. =/

Posted by bigdave 20th January, 2003

just f'ucking drop the idea of crappiest game compo and make an actual competition. This is a shite idea.

Posted by Simon Elo 20th January, 2003

It is superb idea! Looking forward to it! :D

i think with the new news system all you admins are doing are creating more work for yourself. get more admins! you only have shadowcaster, shen, circy and tom hurst... at least these are the only ones we see. i'm not volunteering but someone must want to! (btw apologies to any admins i have left off my list)

Posted by bigdave 20th January, 2003

i sure hope shadowcaster does this well...

Posted by Shen 20th January, 2003

It could also be a good idea to add a user pending list so people can't create loads of accounts to spam the place (this happened once actually)

Posted by CsaR 20th January, 2003

Do you admins try the games before you approve them or something? I noticed that many games has pretty poor descriptions so you can't be checking that, and screenshots isn't required either...What do you check really?

Posted by Max 20th January, 2003

hehe, I can't believe that the Crappiest Game Compo idea actually was serious! oh well, I do look toward it nonetheless. Do you need any judges BTW? :D As for the user submitted news, it wouldn't be a good idea. Like with the older file uploading scheme DC once had, there'll be some idiots who'll fill it up with useless bullshit that'll make the admins's lives harder. If that option really is implemented, you'd need to add a news submission limit (like you can only send a single news item a day) A pending user signup would be good, though. It's a good and efficient way to stop people who register using inaquedate/too long names while keeping the okay people in.

Posted by Ashman 20th January, 2003

No No No No No!! I am against the news submission, because thats the only think Ministry of Klik has on DC! Leave it be ;)!

Posted by ShadowCaster 20th January, 2003

DC used to have this feature when it was first about and it went pretty well. Though I must say we have a lot more enemies these days ;) Hmm... why didnt someone tell me I buggered up the GOTW? I just noticed that I forgot to include the date line so the first game was actually being displayed as the date :) Fixed now. Anyway, as far as the crappiest game comp goes, I really wish people would stop complaining. It's not like no one voted for it... more people voted for it than didnt, so most people obviously want it.

Posted by vortex2 20th January, 2003

That was a REAL poll? LOL , oh well... Anyway, i know one thing, it will be a hard contest! we have some really crappy games out there! there should be some rules though, to stop someone from just having a dot move about a white screen using the 8 directional movement :P

Posted by Muggus 20th January, 2003

Nice new poll Mike...very classy indeed... I think a concensus on exactly what this 'crappiest game' comp's rules will be, because they're's alot of confusion around, and I guess if you run a comp where no one agree's with the rules, then no one with enter...:(...that's never good!

Posted by Buster 20th January, 2003

I was thinking, Insted of the crappiest game the stupidest game. theres a difference.

Posted by ShadowCaster 21st January, 2003

Well that's kind of what I had in mind, Buster.

Posted by Buster 21st January, 2003

yay

Posted by Rik 21st January, 2003

I didn't read most of the previously posted comments, so I'm simply assuming that I'm the first person to come up with the idea, but I voted for it, because it looked like an original challange. We've strived to make the best game in the world. We've hoped to create a game, that challanges everyone, including ourselves. The more speciffic I get with this description, the less accurate I'll be, but if a competition could be set in an alien playfield, I just may have a fighting chance. What guidelines should a crappy game be given, that's so damn challanging? Maybe a game that frustrates a determined player in the shortest amount of time. I reakon I could make a game, that's pretty damn frustrating, and I may just have a fighting chance. Maybe you guys have different guide lines. What ever they are, I would enjoy being creative, while the others are still adjusting too them.

I think the only rule for crappiest game should be that gameplay is varied and lasts at least 5 minutes.

Posted by Jon Chambers 22nd January, 2003

But anyone can make a crap game with varied gameplay. If they all suck beyond comprehension, how can you determine the crapiest. I think it should be a game that frustrates the player before he/she gets a chance to discover all the features.
