Well, I've only been here a couple of days, and I can clearly see that there are some very strong opinions on ripped graphics as opposed to those of the hand-drawn ilk! Unlike much of TDC, there are some outside the community that use sprite edits! No style is clearly better than the other (for a fact), and there are, in fact, very good Klik apps that use either style!

So I pose this question to you: Which form of spriting do you prefer when working with your Klik app?

We all know the pros and cons, right?

Hand-Drawn: Hardcore Klikkers sit down for what may be hours on end! Pro: Very excellent spritework. Con: LOTS of work and time.

Sprite Edits: Not as many hardcore Klikkers in this category, but they still enjoy the programs just the same! Pro: Very excellent spritework in a short amount of time. For some, also very little effort. Con: LOTS of criticism from hardcore graphics fanatics. Plus the fact that you will get ratted out.

Well, here it is, folks! Just drop your opinions here! And maybe even start a good-hearted argument! But let's see a good, clean fight! No hitting below the belt or junk like that, yadda, yadda, yadda. And, GO!

I've never used ripped graphics in my games. Sure, i've used library graphics, but not ripped graphics from other games, and I definately NEVER EVER have even thought of making a fan game!

I am drawing the graphics for my game. I color them in the computer. It takes lots of work but it does give the game a "Yoshi's Island" style. Well, at least thats the way my style of drawing makes it look. I do use library graphics for some backdrops though. Some of them are very good.

Dave - "Plus, a game can never be yours if you blatently steal things"

Don't forget, that includes sounds and music too. It's kinda funny when people compain about ripped graphics, then go and steal sounds and music for their own games. (not saying everyone does it, but I bet a good deal of you do)

It doesn't bother me whether ripped graphics are used in a game or not - so long as the person says where they came from (in the documentation, for example). If you're no good at making your own graphics, why struggle to make a game on Mr. stick man and the shonky world of Zod? (which will look god-awful) Unless you're serious about landing a job in the games industry, or something. Even then, one person does not make the engine, graphics and level layout all on their own. Funnily enough.

So...I think you can guess what I prefer (ripping graphics). I'm no good at making graphics, so I'm not going to do more than a little editing, if anything. I'm good at engines/movement and level layouts, but not at graphics. Surely there are quite a few people in this same boat?

Hand-drawn rules!

Another con to ripped graphics: You're llimited to what you can steal off the internet.

It is stealing too if you don't use your own music.

Well, since we bought MMF we do have rights to use the libraries for whatever purpose.

But...

Just wait until the people who have never seriously tried (or tried to practice and improve) to draw, refuse to try, and complain that they just aren't good at drawing or anything that has to do with graphics...

The same with music.

I just wish those people would have a little more confidence and actually go out and try. It takes a while, but it works.

You know what, the graphical confident of the Click Community should all make their own tutorials on how to draw stuff and post them up for the unconfident to check out so they can get the idea of what they can do to learn. Maybe that'll be my special lunch break activity today.

Ah. All good points. Allow me to drop a little something of mine.

If you just blatantly ripped the graphics, that's just no effor at all. If you're gonna rip, at least do a little something TO it.

For example, I remember previously working on a Luigi fangame and I got some of the graphics from a lib. However, I resized and touched up some of the items, item boxes, etc, and game them new anims and did the same for Luigi as well.

But yes, while it takes time, hand-drawing sprites does convey a little more effort. I remember the original concept for RyuFox Fighters 2. It had a different storyline and all, but for the most part, all the character drawings were hand-drawn. I would've continued on it if my old HD didn't get fried.

So for me, it just depends on what I have the time or will to do. But I do plan on one day making a Klik game in which the entire graphical content is hand-drawn though.

My preference (most of the time) is edits. Occasionally I will do hand-drawn.

I must admit i have never made a mod or midi and that i get almost all of my music from www.modarchive.com

however i dont stick to one rule or the other for graphics.
if i make a fangame i just may use ripped graphics if only to make the game closer to the originals that we all love.
and for original games i sometimes add a background from commercial game, but it is usually well disguised, i hope.

If i made a fangame i'd probably use ripped GFX to suit the fangamed-ness, but I'll NEVER EVER make a fan game, the most is to get inspired graphic-wise.

Sure some of us suck at drawing, are tone deaf, and of cource aren't as talented as that guy from police acadamy, but that's what teams are for.

If u 'accidently' make too good graphics people will say 'it looks like ripped' anyway.
