I think that SD Gundam G Generation: Gather Beat 2 or SD Gundam Winner's History.

I haven't played any American games like this, except a demo of Incubation.

Shining Force 1, 2 and Warsong... old sega turned based games! Extremely dated, but still the greatest!

Civilizations?
I liked Alpha Centauri a lot, although it tended to result in me staying up until 5am a lot.
Jagged Alliance (any).
Steel Panthers and the original Master of Orion.
Fallout 1 or 2, but not Tactics.

I don't know. I like TBS games a lot. Well, good ones, anyway. It's sort of been a neglected genre since FPS and RTS games came along, though.

I'm trying to play through Shining Force 1 and 2 along with Warsong again.

But have any of you tried Disgaea: Hour of Darkness for the Playstation 2? That game is really fun and hilarious!

M.A.X is still the best in my opinion (not M.A.X. 2 that was a bad sequel).

A little known game called empire 2, you could design your own units and maps with special rules, and you could have parallel planning

I'm a fan of Civilization... and also Battle Isle '93, which was like a very early version of Advance Wars.
