I'm looking to make my own Game Serevr for family and friends. Is there any software to do so? If it is any consolation, the Serevr is at first for Starcraft and Counter-Strike... Also, tell me if I need to do any programming and in what language. Thank you!

A lot of games have a "Dedicated Server" option, but I think hosting several on the same system at once wouldnt be too good for performance. Also many games have this option in the games multiplayer menu, rather than a seperate application which just displays a small text-based window, so that makes things even more difficult.

Though I'm not the aficionado on such topics, so someone else might know a valid method for doing this.

You dont need any kind of special software, noor do you need any programming.

What you DO need is a computer that only run as a server. At least around 600-700 Mhz (depends on what games you want to run as a server) or so and some ram (256+ mb recommended). For better stability use an OS like Windows 2000. Its more stable than Windows 9x or ME. XP is too heavy ... eats too many ressources on the looks and is just a little bit more unstable.

You can also use Linux, but thats harder to install and configure (generally). Dont know anything about Linux myself.

Then you will need a descent internetconnection. It must be quite fast and stable. Have at least 256 kbits up and down.

For a Counter-strike server (cs) install Half-Life on the server, then cs. It is a good thing to have some extras installed for the cs server. HLGuard is an anticheat addon, and adminmod makes it easier to kick, ban, change maps and more. Look at some hl/cs sites for more info.

Then start cs. Choose play cs, then play online, then create game. Choose number of players, password and make sure youve checked the dedicated server option. Click ok, and your server is starting up.

That should be about it.

Maybe you have to configure your network a bit, but dont know how that looks like.

For Starcraft Im sure there are equal possibilities to make a dedicated server. Try to look at some community sites.

If you knew, I would have to kill you...
