I've been brain storming about improvements game makes could do for beat'em up games. I think the gene is still improving. Rag Doll physics have helped out the combo system used in them. RPG elements have helped add more interest also. But they are still pretty much button smashers.

I kind of see them as a blank canvas of sorts, and i feel strongly that their are new game play elements out their that could be blended into them. So any ideas.

Marvel VS capcom style combo system. its simple, yet you can pull off very complex and long combo's if your good enough and know what your doing, plus the ability to knock an enemy into the air and jump up after them to follow up with aerial combo's to then smash them back down to the ground is cool. you'd still be able to button mash, but if you studied your characters attacks long enough you could do precise and powerful combos. just a thought. also, an overdrive attack would be cool. once you take a certain amount of damage or pass enough time in a level it unlocks so you can do some kind of massive all screen attack that deals high damage.

interesting, screen clearing attacks are in a lot of games already. But i think earning the attack by mastering the combos is kind of a new twist. I like it better than the screen clearing strikers of scott pilgrim. They were cool be it only left players wishing knifes was a playable character. Fans only had to wait 3 years for her dlc. So they could finial play her.

Although I remember Street Fighter from the arcades when it used actual punch pads to determine the strength of the hits, I am not a big fan of the genre. I know that I'm in the minority, but I want to see games that are more realistic. I have some training in martial arts, and there is a very real relationship between attacking, and your energy level. I don't see this in fighting games.

Nah, not until motion-based control improves a lot.
We'll probably see more advanced fighting systems in games like GTA and maybe even FPSs and RPGs, but pure fighting games are done.
It's the same with sports games - developers release a new one each season, with better graphics, new players, and more pointless bells & whistles - but it doesn't make them any better. I'd have to disagree with sketchy, there has been a lot of unique fighting games recently that have changed the way we think about fighting games. of coarse i mentioned marvel vs capcom. obviously its not realistic, but you get to control and freely swap between a team of 3 characters, which gets pretty dang hard to keep up with, but if you know what your doing you can pull off some unique combo's. in addition there was another fighting game that really pushed the ideas of fighting games, its called Persona 4 Arena. to my knowledge, the other persona games are RPGS. which is interesting to see it turned into a fighting game, because all of the RPG elements of the old games were added in. the game allows the character to control themselves and what is called your persona. its kinda like another team mate. this game is unique though, where as it has status effects and elemental damage. if you keep backing up away from your opponent, the game sends your character into "Fear" which means until you start on the offense you'll take more damage. if you do the same moves over and over the game will make fun of you, and the attacks power will drop rapidly. you can become paralyzed, poisoned, feared, angered, and when your character gets low on health it turns them into the "awakened" stage, unlocking the rest of their moves and energy. so i dont think that fighting games are done evolving, theres so much more we can add to them to make gameplay more fun, more fast paced and more unique.
On sort of a side note, a "fighting" game style i would like to see but havnt seen (and correct me if there is one) but would like to see is a 3d sword (and other weapons) fighting game thats moderately realistic (unlike Soul Caliber). id like to see sparks when our swords clash, and the ability to quick block strikes etc.
Also... have any of you heard of MUGEN? Its a fighting game engine thats open source, you can literally google practically any character from anything and find it for mugen. if you cant find it, you can make it. theres anything on the web from Ken and Ryu From streetfighter, to Spongebob Squarepants, to Superman Etc.

I have messed with mugen before. I like open bor better. Because i love to do background art, and create areas for players to explore.

I mainly like the marvel VS Capcom style of gameplay most characters have for mugen. ive made a few stages as well but id rather get into making characters, but its a long drawn out ordeal.

I understand the long drawn out ordeal. I've been making my own media fusion library of characters for a long time now. I'm always looking for methods to speed it up. But for my own sprites i switched from using Photoshop to using gimp. Once gimp created their light box script. After that happened, i feel they took the lead as the best software for pixel animation. Plus gimp is free.

You got be carefully ware you download gimp from. Lots of people have tampered with some of the downloads adding malware and other unpleasant things to them.

i did like mugen when i tried it out. but when i tried it i didn't use my own art. I found this artist group on deviant art. I'm sure their probably better sources, but this is one i used.
